Earth, Wind and Fire dont les tubes ont marqué les années 1970 et 1980, a été fondé en 1969 à Chicago par le batteur Maurice White. Après avoir sorti un premier opus éponyme en 1971, la formation enchaîne alors les hits, fortement reconnaissables grâce à la voix de fausset de son chanteur Philip Bailey. Après le succès des albums ‘Spirit’ et ‘That’s the Way of the World’, le groupe adopte le style disco, très à la mode à cette période, et atteint son apogée avec ‘All’n All’, disque certifié double platine. Fort de sa popularité, Earth, Wind and Fire voit de plus en plus grand pour ses concerts qui deviennent de véritables shows et remplit le stade de Wembley cinq soirs de suite en 1979. Au cours des années 1980, le groupe rencontre quelques difficultés, plusieurs membres quittent la formation, le disco est détrôné dans les charts par d’autres genres musicaux et les tournées épuisent le leader Maurice White. Après une pause amorcée en 1983, la formation reprend du service quatre ans plus tard, avec la participation de nouveaux éléments, dont le chanteur et guitariste Sheldon Reynolds.

Le retour de Earth, Wind and Fire s'opère en 1987. À partir de là, les albums sont plus espacés dans le temps. De nouveaux éléments intègrent le groupe, comme le chanteur et guitariste Sheldon Reynolds, les tournées continuent mais sans la participation de Maurice White, atteint de la maladie de Parkinson, qui pourtant apporte sa contribution aussi bien compositrice que vocale à chaque nouvel album.
Récemment, Wyclef Jean ou encore Eric Benet ont participé aux derniers opus.Al McKay fut aussi le guitariste de Ike et Tina Turner, des Temptations et de Sammy Davis Jr.
Le 4 février 2016, Maurice White meurt.
Philip Bailey, Verdine White et Ralph Johnson, membres d'origine, se produisent toujours. Ils ont donné un concert à l'Olympia en France le 24 juin 2016.
