Choral Eucharist for the Fourth Sunday of Easter

Choral Eucharist – Easter IV

Our annual performance of Britten's Ceremony of Carols on the Third Sunday of Advent, 12th December 2021, is given by the upper voices of St Bride's Choir accompanied by harpist Sue Rothstein. It is preceded as usual by a short, candle-lit lower voices Evensong.

The work opens and closes with the chant "Hodie Christus natus est" (Today Christ is born)sung in procession. The chant is also the basis of the poignant and dramatic harp Interlude which is both at the centre of the whole work and its longest movement.

This service is preceded by a shortened form of Evensong, sung by men's voices which complements the Britten by using two of the same elements - plainsong, which is used for the responses, psalm and canticles, and medievalism, with a piece of seasonal medieval music ending the service just before the Ceremony of Carols begins.

This week Steve tackles a theological conundrum – The Trinity.

The reflection opens with the hymn 'I bind unto myself this day' – also known as St Patrick's breastplate – and concludes with Thomas Attwood's anthem, 'Turn thy face from my sins', a setting of words from Psalm 51, sung by St Bride's Choir. Attwood (1765–1838) was sent abroad to study through the patronage of the Prince of Wales (later to become George IV) where he studied under Mozart.

The reflection opens with the hymn 'Praise my soul, the King of heaven' and concludes with St Bride's Choir singing Olivier Messiaen's 'O sacrum convivium'. Music for Messiaen was a way of expressing his Christian faith but surprisingly this short anthem is his only liturgical motet.

This week Alison talks about a woman she knew who earned her respect and admiration for her steadfast commitment to an incredibly challenging job.

The reflection opens with the hymn 'Love divine, all loves excelling' and concludes as St Bride's Choir sing Richard Dering's anthem 'Factum est silentium.' It is a dramatic setting of a text for the feast of St Michael and All Angles – which we celebrate this Sunday – and vividly conveys the silence in heaven as the Archangel Michael joins in battle with the dragon.

Valiant for Truth: Journalists' Commemorative Service 2024

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. 

St Bride's Choir opens this reflection with the last from the set of Three Motets by Charles Villiers Stanford, "Beati quorum via" which sets Psalm 119: 1 – "Blessed are they whose way of life is wholesome: who walk in the law of the Lord."

Today we celebrate the feast of St Peter and St Paul, two of the most significant saints in Christian history. Alison reflects on this rather unexpected pairing as although they likely died together, they had very different backgrounds and personalities and their relationship was not without its tensions.

We close with the hymn "Ye watchers and ye holy ones" which has text by Athelstan Riley and is set to an uplifting German tune – Lasst uns erfreuen/ Let us rejoice.

Reflection in words & music – Sunday 29 June, 2025

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. 

After the reading from Luke's Gospel, Alison reflects on when Jesus sent out his followers to proclaim his Kingdom as "lambs in the midst of wolves", and wryly recalls Gimli the Dwarf's line from The Lord of the Rings, "Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?"

The choir sings William Walton's "Set me as a seal" written for the wedding of the son of his lover, Lady Alice Wimbourne. It is surely one of the most perfect presents a newly married couple could receive.

We close with another wedding favourite, the hymn "Praise, my soul, the King of heaven."

Reflection in words & music – Sunday 29th June 2025

St Bride's Choir sings Mascagni's rousing Easter Hymn from his opera Cavalleria Rusticana.

Mascagni's one act opera is set on Easter morning and in this number the villagers gather to sing a hymn of praise to the risen Lord "We rejoice that our Saviour is living!"

We sing this each year at our 11am Choral Eucharist service on Easter Day at St Bride's Curch, Fleet Street, London.

Easter Hymn (Cavalleria Rusticana)- Mascagni

"A Song for the Season of Creation" was commissioned for St Bride's Choir in recognition of their #PlasticLessLent campaign and premiered on Sunday 26th May 2019. Scores of various arrangements available for FREE at www.stbrides.com/creation

Composer Ian Stephens set the poem "Everything holds together" by Malcolm Guite. The anthem is available in a number of arrangements suitable for choirs and singing groups of all ranges and sizes.

It is hoped that "A Song for the Season of Creation" will be performed in churches throughout the land, either as part of Season of Creation services or Harvest Festivals.

The anthem is a song of praise for God's Creation and a timely reminder of our duty of stewardship to protect & enhance the environment in which we live.
