22nd Sunday In Ordinary Time

On this day of the Presentation, we celebrate the Lord revealing Himself as the light of the world. Simeon the prophet was able to recognize the Lord as the savior of his life. We pray for the grace to receive a faith that is able to see Christ in our daily life and truly transform us and heal us. Our faith is more than nice phrases and statements; it is a real relationship.

In our readings for this Sunday we are shown 3 lives that are purified by the love and mercy of God. Isaiah’s prayer is purified by the act of the angel touching his lips with the coal from the altar of God. Peter and Paul are purified of a negative self image and brought into a divine perspective of their lives and the true power of God. May we pray for the grace of purification to take place in our daily lives as well.

So much of our Faith in Jesus is rooted in things we cannot see. The readings for this weekend point us to a deeper trust in the word of Christ so as to become more dependent upon Him. We pray for the grace to risk our comfort and move into the reality of the divine life with Jesus as our guide.

In the victory of Christ, we can say with St. Paul; O death, where is your sting, O death, where is your victory.

We hear in the Gospel for this weekend the glorious account of the Lord’s transfiguration. Peter, James, and John were able to see the true identity of Jesus as being truly God and truly human. They were brought from a spiritual sleep to a spiritually awakened state. We are invited to bring to Jesus all that causes us to be asleep to His love and mercy, and to be awakened to His presence in our daily lives. May His grace transform us into the people He desires us to become.

With one of His most famous parables, Jesus points us to the incredible truth of the nature of our Father in Heaven. His is the nature of love and mercy itself. In order for these gifts to be received well, Jesus shows us that our desires need to be purified. We are meant to want to be in our Father’s house and relate to Him in the fullest way possible. Whenever we are tempted to leave home, we pray that God’s grace will bring us home rejoicing.

This Palm Sunday, the church recalls the Lord’s glorious entry into his own city only to be handed over to sinners and to be crucified. Like the disciples who followed Him then, we are asked to make a definitive choice whether or not we will follow Him in every aspect of our own lives; most especially in the ways of daily dying to ourselves for the sake of God. May this week be truly Holy for you all.

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we particularly celebrate the wounds of Christ which are the sources of our healing. As Isaiah the prophet spoke hundreds of years before Jesus that, “by his wounds we are healed”, we thank God for the chance of new life. Jesus also invites us into His wounds to become a source of healing for them. Our daily conversion is a sweet remedy to the broken heart of Jesus. May the Lord continue to strengthen us with his love and mercy.
