Lucien Basdevant - Tombeau D'un Physicien Nucléaire

This is a piece written for my exams in the class of electroacoustic composition during the spring semester of '21.

In this piece I tried to manipulate sound using limited sound sources, specifically Iron (Ferrum) and Human Voices (Voces). The idea being that small or massive pieces of Iron and their attacks or resonances serve as an instrument and the voices only add to that sound rather than giving a whole meaning to the composition. Despite these two main sound sources some sine waves are also being used.

The kick cuts through the trees like a scythe, calling out to her, drawing her closer. It comes from every direction, the purr of the bass slipping through the forest like low-hanging mist.

The primal, metronomic pressure of the beat enmeshes with his lycanthropic howl. The sound is everywhere, and impossible to get a fix on. It rains down from on high, sticking her cloak to her skin and slicking his fur. It rises from the earth, seeping between her toes.

Within this secret glade they meet, alone except for the rotting leaves and creeping moss. Here they become one, disparate egos dissolved in a cocktail of chemical impulses, dopamine responses and the instinctive urgency of the sound that surrounds and consumes them.

On the second single on his Disco Inferno label, I Hate Models exudes the mysterious, ancient power of the werewolf, and invites you to join him in one last dance.

No heart is a stone unburned. Even the darkest soul must know of the light — to confront it, to reckon with it. In passing through time, the shadows cast by the light change shape and direction. They dart out in front, skew their strange angles, and creep up behind.
Once, the light felt like a distant echo in the past, a wan energy barely able to penetrate the fog of the present. But behold the threshold and the new shadows cast as you pass through it. The light on the other side feels different — cast in viridian, heralding change, growth, but not yet warm.

The archway is cast in fluorite. Old expectations refract and splinter — prismatic illusions that struggle to form the forgotten self-image. The negative space which opens up around aches with new possibilities. Ambiguous outcomes inspire cryptic emotions — where once there was only resistance, now comes fragility. Lessons reveal themselves in unknowable shapes, every step another evolution of the shadow self.
The latest single from I Hate Models heralds a new chapter, shedding old habits and embracing a broader emotional palette without losing the fierce momentum of his thunderous, maverick techno.

Machine Gone

No one hears any sound the same way. Every emotional and intellectual response to a song is a tangled network of deep-seated memories and social pressures. The banalest hook can inexplicably reduce someone to tears, while a passionate crescendo might be deflected off an impenetrable shield of self-seriousness. A pealing lead atop a thunderous kick might be instantly triggering for one dancer, while another is having their future emotional response to music shaped in that very moment. With the first release on his new, pointedly titled label Disco Inferno, I Hate Models teases the possibility of inspiring moments of intense, soul-wrenching nostalgia in one listener and blasting open new neural pathways to profound sentiment in another.
