“Plan C” is a new sound & light installation.
Set up inside the bridge over the Rein (Deutzer Brücke) in Cologne, in the framework of Brückenmusik.
We have set up a installation in the interior of the Deutz Brücke with numerous electro-mechanical devices.  A series of 80 powerful LED’s triggered by the bridge vibration ,12 strong sound boxes, , 12 music boxes 6 that play text compositions and 6 play musical compositions, plus a  robot build for plan C. These hand-made sound generators will connect the three segments of the bridge. The Site-specific conditions are addressed in this installation, reinforced and counteracted. It is orbiting between the poles of performance, installation and concert.

Plan - C

Yokomono-Pro is a car horn concert performed by vehicles moving through a city. Each city and each type of vehicle has its own tone and each combination results in a different concert. The project was developed and written as a commission by the International Sonic Residency 2008 for The KHOJ Artists’ Association in New Delhi and was presented one year later at the India Art Summit. In New Delhi we focused on the traffic and the amazing amount of noise it produces. One of the most prominent noisemakers is the three-wheel taxi, which uses its horn very frequently in situations where we would use our indicators, headlights or mirrors. Taxis are the most recognisable means of transport here, playing a dominant role in the city’s soundscape. We arranged for the collaboration of thirty so-called ‘tuck tuck’ taxis and operated their horns via remote by means of transmitters. By playing this ‘taxi horn choir’ in combination with spatial manoeuvres an urban sound choreography was created. Yokomono-pro has also been performed at the Transmediale in Berlin and at TodaysArt in The Hague.

Yokomono-Pro can be thought of as a ‘car orchestra’ with the car horn as its instrument, or as a ‘John Cage happening’, as a choreography or refined celebration of a football victory or a marriage. And it is all that, but then again it’s not that simple. It involves movement and sound in the public space and that makes it different, in many ways, from a traditional performance with static instruments in a closed environment. Also, the car is a ‘charged’ object, occupying an important economic and social position, while evoking varying associations and emotions. As an urban composer the challenge for me is to redefine this dominant element in our surroundings and find structure and harmony for it.


Yokomono-pro-gent

LOLA landscape architects and Staalplaat Soundsystem present a new installation. A matrix of 64 trees. Controllable mechanical vibrators are mounted on each individual tree and controlled via DMX. The sound of the individual trees can vary from a barely audible noise to a heavy "Green noise" thereby enabling different patterns to be played. A special composition for 64 trees will be written titled "Shiver Me Timbers". After the composition is played, the visitors will then be able to play their different patterns via their mobile phone, directly then they influence the behavior of nature.

Kraft durch Klang installation in old WOII German bunker Den Haag 2015
“Kraft durch Klang” is an exhibition / installation in a old WOII German bunker (old Atlantic-wall) in a park in Den Haag.
It is in a old bunker where they organise exhibitions since 2002, guests can come through the park.
In three small spaces we installed existing instruments, changed or even never used before.
-The first room: with 8 vacuum cleaners we make a new composition for this whistle blowing  orchestra
-The second room: with five musical organs that play text we play  with engines only and compose using controls the speed and start stop of the engines.
-The last room is filled with water where putt-putts float, these are chemo acoustic sound objects .


Kraft Durch Klang Musicbox Composition 02- 2015

At the GOGBOT festival  we present for the first time our new sequencer system.
It lets us play our machines live.
On the main square of Enschede a frame is set up round the local monument .
In this set up we will place:
12 bog boxes
10 metal grinders
12 vacuum cleaners (that play flutes)
9 jigsaws that play drum-pedals
lots of radio's radio’s +neon
4 big flutes (2 to 5 meter long) and some drumming machines

YOKOMONO is stopped for some time, but this is a nice recording. The old setup for the YOKOMONO live concert version consists of 10 vinyl killers – toy car record players, each customised with its own fm transmitter. For these killers we made three different loop records (locked groove records) with 55 loop on each side and we are now working on a new record for Yokomono.  The sound will come through a set of radios that receives the signal transmitted by the vinyl killers You might think Yokomono is just a DJ set with 10 turntables, and in a way that is correct but in many more ways Yokomono is completely different. First of all; each killer is mono and has pour sound quality, but much more Yokomono is very hard to handle, you can not really select a track or make it stop when you want to, its more putting the needle down blindfolded. The real difference starts when you realise each killer runs on batteries, meaning the speed is unstable and it will slow down during the concert, the fact that the batteries run out will not only effect the speed but it will effect the fm frequency that the killer is transmitting too. 

Yokomono Live At Weserburg,(germany) 12.11.2006

We build a new mechanical orchestra for Transmediale  that consists of custolmised household appliances, which might normally be found in a shop window. The various sound devices are arranged in groups.  A robot invites the passers-by to “play” the orchestra through their phone with simple dial commands. Visitors can play the instruments and compose using the sound compositions.

This sound art work ‘Live is a Guitar Drag’ is specifically designed for the former shooting range of the Marineterrein Amsterdamconsists of 120‘ solenoids’ and a robot . in the context of the ‘Living Art Lab’ program.  made for Steim in Amasterdam. From July 17th to the 15th of august public can visit the installation at the Marineterrein Amsterdam.

Since its inception in 2000, Staalplaat Soundsystem has created a multitude of MACHINE ORCHESTRA'S using all manner of consumer electronics. Previous highlights of Staalplaat Soundsystem performances include »FLOATING ISLANDS« , a large sound/light installation in the Spree,a floating orchestra composed of fifty vacuum cleaners, plastic bottles and lights.
»YOKOMONO« is the Staalplaat Mono Erosive Surround Sound Installation.

You might think Yokomono is just a DJ set with 10 turntables, and in a way that is correct but in many more ways Yokomono is completely different. This project exists as performance and as installation version.
The most resend project »ARCHITONE« is to create sound art with public space. Several compositions were produced for building’s, a park and a trainstation in collaborations with architects and other Artist active and experienced in this veiled. Architone was first developed for the Siemens Arts Programme in Kiel presented at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival where we converted the Kunsthalle into an instrument. Its similar incarnation was »CLOSED ENOUGH« presented with Mark Bain in Graz at the Steirischer Herbst and ORF Musikprotokol. »STATION TO STATION« made for the Today’s Art festival in Den Haag, in collaboration with Mike Rijnierse, Erik Hobijn and Mark Bain, we applied Architone principles to the Den Haag Central train-station. To explore the train station sound as a source and control and transform it into an new instrument, we used the back and forth movement of as the faders for the mixing of 10 train horns and station sounds. The Staalplaat Soundsystem is now working on the new Architone project »YOKOMONO-PRO«, developed for the Indian Khoj – International Artists Association in New Delhi.

The initiator of Staalplaat Soundsystem Geert-Jan Hobijn is the founder of Staalplaat , graphic designer, curator and soundartist. Other members are: Carsten Stabenow, the founder of the german Media Art festival garage curating and organising for many different media- and sound art festivals, Carlo Crovato is working as an solo artist also under the pseudonym plastic-electrics and Jens Alexander Ewald software developer and research associate at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel.
