Witchtape #202 | Guest Wizz : Mayura (Balkan Bhakti Collective)

After a long flight in Southeastern direction, Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the witch apprentice) saw a mighty river in the distance. Hekske instinctively knew this must be the Danube River, of which she had seen several sections before, but never in this part of South-Eastern Europe. The witches decided to follow the flow of the river downstream. Strangely, instead of getting wider, the valley became narrower and narrower, until it was just a steep canyon of near-vertical rock faces. The Danube River (which is a very old river), has patiently carved its way through this mountain ridge for millions of years. Hekske realized that this must be the Iron Gate, which Lalita (the tree nymph) had passed during her epic journey from South-East Asia to Flanders many years ago.
On the other side of the Iron Gate, the valley gradually became wider again. Hekske & Falke continued to follow the river downstream. They had no clue what their destination was, but they knew they would reach it by simply following their inner compass. Then they saw a young witch waving at them from the bank of a tributary. Hekske & Falke didn’t hesitate and gently touched down next to the witch, who introduced herself as Milena. After a warm welcome hug, Milena explained that this river is the Osam which comes straight from the Balkan Mountains. She invited her guests to follow her while flying upstream through the stunningly beautiful valley of the Osam River. A little later, they joined a gathering of over 2 dozen witches deep in the woods. It appeared that this was the traditional new year celebration of the witches of the Balkans.
The witches of this area are exceptionally friendly and hospitable, and they offered delicious banitse (filled pastries) with ayran (a sour yogurt drink). Hekske and Falke savored the yogurt, which was easily the best they had ever tasted in their whole life. And the banitse tasted lovely too… until Hekske and Falke chewed on something hard at exactly the same moment. The Balkan witches started to chuckle when they saw the faces of their Flemish guests. Milena explained that for New Year they have the tradition to hide a lucky charm in each pastry. In this case it was a little piece of a dogwood branch with a bud, which symbolizes health & longevity. And given the fact that most witches live over 500 years, longevity really means a lot…
And after this delicious welcome meal, the witches headed towards the mysterious Devetàshka Cave complex (Деветашката пещера) which is the holy site where witches hold the traditional opening ritual for he new year, like their ancestors have been doing for thousands of years…

«Ja ja, wir gehen ja schon», grummeln wir. Im selben Moment kommt eine Bimmelbahn mit quietschenden Reifen vor uns zum Stehen. «Taxi?», ruft Lokführer Lui Mafuta uns entgegen.
«Joa ok.». Wir steigen ein. Schön.
Lui drückt aufs Gas und dann auf play, damit wir den Ausblick mit bummeliger Bimmelbahnmusik genießen können. Bei 108 bpm bimmelbummelt es sich in der Tat ausgesprochen angenehm.
«Wo soll denn die Reise hingehen?», fragt er uns durchs Mikrofon.
