When Aim’s Cold Water Music dropped in 1999 on cult Manchester label Grand Central Records, it was an underground sensation. Preceded by a string of well received 12”s and EP’s the album was eagerly anticipated and Aim delivered in a big way, elevating his trademark sound to new heights with a collection of uplifting cinematic soundscapes, dark jazz fuelled breaks and hard hitting hip-hop beats (featuring guest rap legends QNC, AG and YZ). Uniquely, there was a sense of nostalgic sentimentality running through the record and the whole thing was underpinned by a musicality often missing in sample based production.

Pushed on by organic, word-of-mouth promotion and the success of the Aim Live band that sold out Shepherds Bush Empire and smashed Glastonbury’s Jazz World stage in 2007, Cold Water Music went on to shift over 100,000 units and is now seen as a ground-breaking, genre defining UK classic that has inspired legions of bedroom beat-makers.

The original vinyl pressing sold out within weeks of it’s release making it a sought after collectors piece with rocketing Ebay prices for clean copies. After years of fan requests, both ATIC and Aim felt the time was right to finally repress the wax. Says Andy Turner (Aim), “Rather than just repress the original album, we remastered and recut it from scratch using the original DAT master tapes.”

Every now and then an album comes along that both resonates and endures. An album that stays with those first to hear it and one that is discovered and treasured by generations to follow. Seventeen years on from it’s initial release Cold Water Music sounds as fresh, as inventive and as necessary as it ever did.

Ben Gomori is a London based producer and DJ and has gaining a name for himself with his series of unofficial edits of everyone from Sampha to Leonard Cohen to DJ Shadow. His new Sterns Edits venture with African and Brazilian music giants Sterns Music sees him go legit with a series of official reworkings of tracks from their extensive catalogue that stretches back to the ’60s, and is housed in an old bank vault underneath Warren Street tube station.
This mix features some of Ben’s favourite afro-house edits and remixes, as well as his first four Sterns Edits efforts – including exclusive plays of the upcoming second release which features the mighty Amadou Balaké. Jake 'Snake' Paterson has a notoriously firm rump, hardened by years sand dune runs and sitting out the back for the wave of the day. While that wave didn't always arrive in his allotted half-hour, Snake always made great use when it did, taking down the Pipe Masters and Jeffrey's Bay event (x2) against admittedly superior surfers.

After a decade on the Tour that was successful by most any measures (did you know Snake was once a single heat away from winning the World Title—true!), he moved onto team-managing for his long-time sponsor Quiksilver, then spent the last decade or so coaching the next gen of competitive hell-raisers. (Remember the Zeke vs. John heat at Bells? Who do you think was in the (native) Hawaiian's corner?)

Alas, one of competitive surfing's greatest minds has decided to hang up his orange hand towel and head to more UV-friendly pastures, taking over the CEO position of sunscreen brand We Are Good Times Inc. 

Since the Stab CUSP is one-half comprised of CT coaches (hey, Stace) and almost 100% comprised of competitive chatter, we thought it was only right to invite Snake on for a proper podcast send-off. Due to scheduling issues (with CUSP co-host Mike Ciaramella being on the opposite side of the globe to Snake, who resides in his native WA), Stace handled the chat alone.

Over the course of an hour, the one-time peers covered a myriad of topics, from fistfights with Andy Irons, miracle Backdoor waves, surf coach accusations and everything in between.

Premiering today, ‘Dancefloor Democracy’, a "funkadelic" slice of dubby disco, by FSQ, a production team led by Chuck “Da Fonk” Fishman. It also is an acronym for “Funk Style Quality” – three elements that make up the core ethos of FSQ’s sound. 

Very special guests, Parliament-Funkadelic’s George Clinton and his son Trey Lewd handle the vocals. Guitars are by Trey and original Funkadelic bass player Billy Bass Nelson.  The artwork is by original P-Funk artist  R. Stozo!

Years in the making.. Soul Clap Records presents ‘Reprise Tonight’, the debut long player from FSQ (Funk Style Quality). The album features guest appearances from a heavy list of funk legends George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Nona Hendryx, Fonda Rae, Denise King, and Dolette McDonald and is the brainchild of two of the most influential forces in Soul Clap’s musical journey, Chuck “Da Fonk” Fishman and our dear departed Sa’d “The Hourchild” Ali. ‘Reprise Tonight’ is a concept album that tells the story of a person who gets the opportunity to have one last party, the party of their life, and we get to see how far they can push it, given the chance to cram all the fun they can into one 24 hour period.

The bug that became FSQ was planted when a young DJ and hip-hop/house head (Sa'd) and an even younger funk fan (Chuck), met in the mid 90s as touring members of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, with Sa'd himself being Dr Funkenstein's nephew. After a brainstorm to find new ways to reinvent themselves, Chuck and Sa'd brought Soul Clap, George Clinton and Sly Stone together for a legendary 2013 collaboration at Red Bull Studios, Los Angeles. Also instrumental in that historic recording session was 8 time Grammy nominated producer G Koop. The trio - Chuck, Sa'd and G Koop then became FSQ - a production team committed to creating original funk of supreme quality. Forming under the auspices of this P-Funk / EFUNK collaboration, FSQ debuted on Soul Clap Records in 2014 with their ‘Zulu Congo Call EP’, which received 10/10 in Mixmag. Later Chas Bronz joined, a Boston based Soul Clap acolyte and guitar hero, and One Era, a Philadelphia based drummer and producer. New York audio engineer Morgan Wiley, from Midnight Magic, joined the group a few years later.

Released July 24 on Soul Clap Records.

Philadelphia soul artist Valvin “V” Roane makes a welcome return to BBE Music with new album ‘Image A Nation’, his first full-length project on the label since 2005 underground classic ‘The Revelation Is Now Televised’.

Independently releasing several albums and EPs in the almost 15 years since his BBE debut, we are delighted to join forces with V once again for another timeless soul classic. Working with such luminaries as Justin Timberlake, Musiq Soulchild and Will Smith during a storied career, V also toured for many years as backing vocalist for Jill Scott.

Created with trailblazers and teachers like Quincy Jones and Marvin Gaye firmly in mind, ‘Image A Nation’ paints a vivid picture of a people and culture on the move.

“Synchronicity played a major factor in the themes and tone of both lyrics and music. We found ourselves telling a magical story of life as a voyage or trip, learning to avoid the pitfalls- forever reaching to find that ”utopia” but being tested as you go through a maze of obstacles. This was real life to a lot of us so it was easy to create from that theme.”

A collaborative effort from inception onwards, the core writing team behind ‘Image A Nation’comprised his production partners Jontae Slade, Andre Capers and Philly music scene stalwart (also occasional Questlove hype man) Yameen Allworld working closely alongside V.

“Every day for a month when I arrived to the studio, Yameen or Jontae would play me a new track they just did that day. The music was so good and perfectly in the realm I was looking for, that we would write and record it on the spot. A lot of this album happened like that.”

Once the songs had been sketched out, Wiz Khalifa and Jay Z’s former tour drummer Eric “Boots” Greene adroitly manifested V’s ambitious concept for the album from behind the studio desk, guiding the final arrangements, providing live instrumentation and lovingly refining ‘Image A Nation’ into something truly ageless.

In the grand tradition of social commentary personified by Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, songs like “Hell No Wont Go”, “Power To The People” and “Into The Light” offer the comfort of solidarity through dark and difficult times. Manifestations of hope and positive affirmations abound in “We Shall Overcome”, “Love Conquers All” and title track “Image A Nation”, adding up to an album which both acknowledges the struggles of yesterday and today, while constantly communicating a sense of openness and optimism for the future.
