If you’ve at all sniffed around the Beatport charts at some stage in the last 12 months, then it’s highly likely that you’ll have been hugely impressed by a Berlin-based duo that go under the name ‘Mat.Joe’. With a string of releases and remixes in the last year on Snatch! Mother Recordings, Defected, Strictly Rhythm and of course Toolroom Trax, it’s an outright pleasure to have them return for their debut single release on the governing Toolroom Records this spring.

‘Nighthawk’ is an all-consuming tech house affair packed with deep grooves, guitar and synth licks and a dimly lit vocal performance, creating a delicately atmospheric personality within the track. Mat.Joe wholly boast their signature warm-yet-rough sound pallet and once again show us why their tracks are in such high demand. 

The release is graced by a stunning re-work from Dosem who twists up the original elements and creates a dark roller that’s crafted to perfection.

Claptone is a unique proposition in modern music. Painted as a mythical character shrouded in mystery, Claptone has become one of the biggest names in electronic music whilst himself remaining in the shadows. He has however constantly sought to deepen his own distinctive world, creating a rich tapestry, which tells the Claptone story.

In his second artist album ‘Fantast’, the Claptone universe is at its deepest and most vivid. He is the master of his domain and in his most artful offering yet, the assured 13 tracks of 'Fantast' come together to create an album full of varied colours and atmospheric textures.

In music Claptone seeks not to create a world of secrecy, but one of great depth and intrigue. An enigma with a tireless desire for creativity and thirst for new music, Claptone has brought together a diverse group of collaborators such as Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, Blaenavon, Tender, Jones, Zola Blood, Austra’s Katie Stelmanis, The Boxer Rebellion’s Nathan Nicholson, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Joan as a Policewoman and Matt Simons.

'Over the last two years it has been a great pleasure to work on this album as a counterpoint to the hectic world of travelling as a DJ. To lose myself when making music, to dive into and create my very own realm of beauty. I admit it's a dreamy, a heartfelt, at times a naive and surely escapist album, but what to do if one - on the quest for his soul - develops a strong desire to go back to his roots, back to nature? Did I find myself on that journey? Rather not. But I found some beautiful moments in the green, out in the woods, out in the fields, under the moon and in the night, moments, which I want to share with you. And there is one thing I learned and now it can be told, I am and have always been a ‘Fantast’.'

The first single 'In The Night' features the vocals of Ben Duffy, which paired with Claptone’s insistent and upbeat production, makes for an exquisitely executed electronic pop gem. It marks an engaging opening snapshot for what will be a milestone in his already glittering career.

'When would I return if not in the night? What would our love look like, if not with you letting me go? Which song will you be humming when thunder and lightning are coming?'

We caught a glimpse of his ambition to produce a body of work in Claptone’s debut artist album 'Charmer' which has scored over 60million streams and counting, but it’s in 'Fantast' that Claptone really delves deeper into the art of songwriting.

2018 will see another intense year of touring as a DJ with Claptone taking his immersive 'The Masquerade' event experience further, having built momentum over the last 18 months hosting events and stages in Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Melbourne, Barcelona and New York and at festivals like Tomorrowland, Melt Festival, Elrow at Amnesia Ibiza, Green Valley in Brazil.

We are turning the page of our next edition of 'Terra Incognita', the third edition full of different and diverse paths it can lead the listeners to. Starting we reveal Habischman - the experienced Iranian producer, releasing his music via top notch labels as Noir Music, Dubfire's SCI+TEC and Get Physical. 'Aperture' comes as a great opener, conjuncted as a delicate blend of vintage dub-chords, elegant vocals and dramatic, hypnotic synths. Italian producer Stephan Jolk, who is putting out his music lately with Hommage and Beatfreak Recordings, can definitely make the synthesizers breathe. His 'Overdub' is a perfect combination of the minimalistic approach to the world of melodies: the pulsing melodic themes are wisely placed into sharply produced strained beat, which are coming together as a great tune as a result. US based artist Enamour has shown himself as a very promising artist, working with the labels as Yoshitoshi and Anjunadeep, so the stated words of Enamour to be a 'a curator of dark, infectious grooves and wistful atmospheres' is perfectly describing this talented producer at his best. 'Pet Paradox' is a firm thing, lying somewhere between genres and far ahead trends. Argentinian Tomy Wahl delivers his stomper 'Matka' next on the line: a powerful bass shaped track with a dramatic piano breakdown and glitchy proper drums. We close a pack with 'Hong Kong Harbour' track from Netherlands based producer Tom Zeta (Diynamic, Einmusika, KATERMUKKE). This work, mainly exposing with the main detuned synth sound, is finishing the exploration of another Terra Incognita, which became known to you now. Real house heads will remember the days when it wasn’t uncommon for artists to make multiple mixes of the same track for their release, and every DJ who played the record had their favorite mix. This way of doing things has fallen to the wayside in the days of digital, perpetuated by a fear that “splitting sales” might hurt chart positions. Well, Sharam wants you to know that he doesn’t care, and his new single harkens back to this sacred, old school tradition. “The Rain” is not just one amazing record – it is three.

The track features the vocals of Adam Englefield, aka Bengle, who crafted these beautiful, haunting lyrics specifically for Sharam's ever-so-meloncholic sound. As if it was needed, the release further displays Sharam’s versatility as a producer, pouring his talent into 3 distinct mixes, each with its own special flavor around the vocals as if three different artists remixed it.

We kick things off with the New York mix, which alone sounds like three unique mixes. It starts deep and ominous, then moves into a building section which captures your attention as it moves continuously upward toward the final section, a huge and impending drop which has had crowds going nuts for months. The climax in the New York mix cannot be understated, it’s an explosion of energy the likes of which only Sharam could conjure.

We move next to the London mix. With its more straight-ahead arrangement amidst alluring melodies and hypnotic elements, this one is more apt for bigger rooms and festivals, yet its consistently deep and keeps the eerie and memorable vibe of the vocals at the forefront.

Finally, the Detroit mix provides an option for those who like their records dirty and raw. Where the New York and London mixes are sleek and polished, the Detroit mix strips things down to its bare, groovy essentials. Its classic, Juno-inspired chords and 909 snare smacks wouldn’t sound out of place in a 90’s house mix out of Chicago, but Sharam seemingly got his inspiration from Detroit. You be the judge.

Altogether, the three distinct mixes come together to create a diverse and exciting body of work that is at once dark, deep, epic, and singularly Sharam. He and Bengle have proven themselves a dream team, gifting the world with this unique record.
