1. THE GOOD OLD BAD OLD DAYS (Newley / Bricusse)

'The Good Old Bad Old Days’ was Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse’s third musical written for the stage and originally intended as a Broadway comeback for Newley after several years of performing his one man show in Las Vegas. Written between 1971-1972, the musical conceived as “a simple little saga about Man, Life, Death, God, and the Devil, with the History of the World thrown in…” finally found a home at London’s Prince Of Wales Theatre, opening on December 20th, 1972 and running for a total of 309 performances.

Although the show received mixed reviews, the score is considered to be one of the most accomplished musical works Newley and Bricusse created during their illustrious writing partnership. Songs from the show were subsequently recorded by Sammy Davis Jnr, Tony Bennett, Frankie Vaughan and Petula Clark.

This fascinating collection compiles all of Anthony Newley’s solo recordings made during the development of ‘The Good Old Bad Old Days’ (originally titled ‘It’s A Funny Old World That We Live In - But The World’s Not Entirely To Blame’) and includes several songs that were later cut from the final West End production. Produced in collaboration with the Anthony Newley Society, the recordings featured on this album are previously unreleased and have been restored from Newley’s own private archive.

JACK THE RIPPER - ORIGINAL LONDON CAST ALBUM

‘Jack The Ripper’ was first adapted for the musical stage in 1974 and featured a score by leading actor Ron Pember and book and lyrics by Pember with Denis De Marne. The musical reconstruction of the incidents relating to the historic East End murders of 1888 was told through the company of a Whitechapel Music Hall, a device that cleverly presented an atmospheric commentary on the murders as opposed to a historic re-enactment. 

The production was first staged at London’s Players’ Theatre, opening on June 25th 1974. Theatre impresario Larry Parnes subsequently transferred the production to London’s Ambassadors Theatre in September 1974 followed by the Cambridge Theatre in February 1975, earning a nomination for ‘Best Musical’ at the 1974 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. In 1979 Broadway producer Elliot Martin debuted ‘Jack The Ripper’ in the United States at Providence’s Trinity Theatre. Today the production remains a popular choice amongst amateur theatre groups worldwide.

In February 1975 an original London cast album of the show was produced but would remain unreleased until now. 40 years after the show was last performed in the West End, Stage Door are pleased to release the original London cast album, digitally remastered from the master tapes.

Stage Door's podcast in which we take an in depth look behind the scenes at the West End musicals we've released on CD. In this episode the spotlight falls on ‘Tess Of The D'Urbervilles’, the 1999 West End musical adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel. 

Featuring music by Stephen Edwards and a libretto by Justin Fleming, 'Tess' opened at the Sheffield Lyceum on September 6th 1999 and was declared a "landmark in musical theatre" receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from the critics. Following a brief UK tour, the production transferred to the West End opening at The Savoy on November 10th, 1999 and was universally damned by the critics, one reviewer sighting the show as "the last great musical flop of the Millennium".

'Tess' closed on January 15th 2000 after just 77 performances. 15 years after 'Tess' closed we look back at the ambitious through-sung drama and explore the journey the production underwent during its development. To reflect on the production we're joined by the composer Stephen Edwards, lyricist Justin Fleming, director and adapter Karen Louise Hebden and both actresses who would alternate the role of Tess; Poppy Tierney and Philippa Healey. 

The programme also features excerpts from the previously unheard live recording of the production, recorded on the press night at the Savoy Theatre and featuring Poppy Tierney as Tess.

A legendary heroine brought vibrantly to life in an ambitious musical; Jeanne is the dramatic story of one of history's most charismatic and courageous women, Joan of Arc. Singer song-writer Shirlie Roden composed Jeanne over a five month period in 1981. She continued to work on its development in the following years, working closely with music producer John Miller, theatre producer Bill Kenwright, and creating additional rewrites under the guidance of director Robin Phillips. The epic rock-opera premiered at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in September 1985, starring Siobhan McCarthy in the title role alongside Peter Straker and Malcolm Roberts. The production subsequently transferred to London’s Sadler’s Wells for a limited season in March 1986 directed by Bill Kenwright, starring Rebecca Storm as Jeanne.

'Jeanne' traces the story of the legendary fifteenth-century Joan of Arc, a young peasant girl destined for greatness, who claims to have been chosen by God to liberate her country and to crown the Dauphin as King of France. The dramatic raising of the siege of Orleans finds Jeanne fulfilling her vision, standing beside the Dauphin as he is crowned. After failing to retake Paris, Jeanne is later captured and taken to Rouen to stand trial where her destiny is sealed as she is condemned as a heretic and sentenced to be burned alive.

The previously unreleased original studio cast album, recorded during the show's development, now makes its debut on CD featuring composer Shirlie Roden as Jeanne alongside Richard Barnes, Peter Straker and Carl Wayne.

‘LIZA OF LAMBETH’ – SHAFTESBURY THEATRE

W. Somerset Maugham’s first novel ‘Liza Of Lambeth’ was adapted for the musical stage in 1976 with a score by Cliff Adams and lyrics by Berny Stringle (who would also direct the West End production). The musical depicts the short life and death of Liza Kemp, an 18-year-old factory worker who lives together with her ageing mother in Lambeth. The show provided an effective insight into the everyday lives of working class Londoners at the turn of the century. Featuring a cast led by Angela Richards in the title role, the show received mixed reviews and ran at the Shaftesbury Theatre for a total of 110 performances. ‘Beautiful Colours’ is sung by Angela Richards and is taken from the Original London Cast Album.

‘VALENTINE’S DAY’ – GLOBE THEATRE

‘Valentine’s Day’ was Denis King and Benny Green’s musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s romantic comedy ‘You Never Can Tell’ and was first staged as a chamber piece at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre to critical acclaim. The production was expanded for the West End stage and transferred to London’s Globe Theatre in September 1992. ‘The World Was Changed This Morning’ is sung by Alexander Hanson and originates from a 2 track promotional CD single produced by Denis King and recorded before the show opened in London.

‘I’ – PICCADILLY THEATRE
Opened: March 16th 1983 (production subsequently withdrawn)

Conceived as a new kind of theatre entertainment for the West End, ‘I’ was based on a series of legends linked together by a thin storyline with the purpose of showcasing the talent of renowned Italian quick-change artist Arturo Brachetti (who also directed the show). The Piccadilly Theatre was renovated especially for the production (billed as a “Supper spectacular with music, dance, midnight sounds and licensed until 2:00 AM”) to allow for a dinner theatre style cabaret in the stalls in order to recreate the cabaret evenings of the Paris nightclub scene. The show featured original music by Robert Purvis who also served as musical director of the show. Due to complications with the production it was decided by the producers to close ‘I’ prematurely, giving notice on the final dress rehearsal. A much-revised production, entitled ‘Y’ opened at the Piccadilly Theatre 3 months later. ‘The Four Dames’ is based on a dream by a young girl focusing on the evils of the world and was sung by the characters Lady Drugs, Lady Hunger, Lady Politics and Lady Bugs. The featured track originates from an unreleased promotional recording of Robert Purvis’ original music for ‘I’, recorded in Paris (with vocals by the ‘I’ cast recorded in London) when the production was still in rehearsal.

‘TROUBADOUR’ – CAMBRIDGE THEATRE
Opened: December 15th 1978 (76 performances)

Originally titled ‘Courtly Love’, ‘Troubadour’ was the brainchild of American businessman Michael Lombardi of the Success Motivation Institute Of Japan. Set in 12th Century France the production explored the ideology of ‘Courtly Love’, the medieval concept of placing women on a pedestal as the recipient of deep emotional feeling. The production featured extravagant sets and costumes by Tim Goodchild but despite the large budget lavished on the musical, the show closed after 76 performances. ‘Only One Rose’ is performed by Andrew C. Wadsworth as the authentic Troubadour Pierre-Vidal and is taken from the Original London Cast Recording.

‘BERNADETTE’ – DOMINION THEATRE

‘Bernadette’ told the story of Bernadette Soubirous, the young French schoolgirl who witnessed visions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto in Lourdes. Written throughout the 1980s by Maureen and Gwyn Hughes, the show was produced by William Fonfé and directed by BBC veteran Ernest Maxin . The cast included Natalie Wright in the title role alongside Meredith Braun, Terry Mitchell, Nikki Ankara, Chris Van Cleave and Martine McCutcheon. Despite much publicity surrounding the musical including receipt of a Papal blessing, the production closed after just 28 performances. Prior to the show opening, producer William Fonfé released a concept album of Maureen and Gwyn Hughes score to showcase the work. ‘Like A Child’ is performed by Miriam Stockley as Bernadette’s mother Louise and is taken from the show’s concept album.

GONE WITH THE WIND (from 'Gone With The Wind')

West End actor Terry Mitchell reflects on starring in the Anthony Newley musical 'The Good Old Bad Old Days'. Terry originated the role of John in the 1972/73 musical.

Terry made his West End debut in 'On The Level' and starred in '1776', 'Gone With The Wind', 'A Little Night Music', 'The Dancing Years' (film) and 'Bernadette'.

Sean O'Mahony's musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' was first staged at London's Ambassadors Theatre in May 1984. Produced in association with Ray Cooney's The Theatre Of Comedy Company, 'The Importance' starred David Firth, Patrick Ryecart and Judy Campbell and ran for a limited season. To date, 'The Importance' holds the distinction of being the only musical adaptation of 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' to run in the West End. A revised production subsequently opened at Peterborough's Key Theatre in July 1986, now titled 'Borne In A Handbag' the new cast featured Nigel Williams as Jack Worthing, Cal McCrystal as Algernon Moncrieff, Amanda Bairstow as Cecily Cardew, Charmian Gradwell as Gwendolen Fairfax and Ann Hamilton as Lady Bracknell.

Following the Key Theatre production, O'Mahony's delightful score was recorded as a studio cast album with members of the original Peterborough cast and other West End vocalists. Produced over a period of 20 years the album features such leading West End performers as Nigel Williams, Jill Martin and Susan Jane Tanner. 

Stage Door is now pleased to debut 'The Importance' cast recording on CD.

Paul Jones performs 'I've Always Had A Dream' from the #LostWestEnd musical 'Drake's Dream' which opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on December 7th 1977.

Lynne and Richard Riley’s musical based on the life of explorer Sir Francis Drake first opened at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre in November 1977 and swiftly transferred the following month to London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. The story encompassed Drake’s historic circum navigation of the world culminating in his return to England. The production starred actor / singer Paul Jones as Francis Drake alongside Caro Gurney as Queen Elizabeth I, Bill Bradley as Philip of Spain, Janet Shaw as Mary Drake and an early starring role for David Burt as Thomas Doughty.  Following the limited run at the Shaftesbury Theatre over the 1977 Christmas season, the production was heavily revised by Ken Hill and re-opened at the Westminster in February 1978 where it ran for a further 4 weeks.  The musical’s main theme ‘I’ve Always Had A Dream’ is performed by Paul Jones and taken from the ‘Drake’s Dream’ Original London Cast Album.

Lionel Bart performs the title track from 'Lock Up Your Daughters', the musical he co-wrote with Laurie Johnson in 1959. Taken from the new Stage Door compilation album 'Lost West End Vintage - London's Forgotten Musicals 1948-1962'.

‘Lock Up Your Daughters’ was the first show to open the new Mermaid Theatre in May 1959. The musical was an adaptation of the Henry Fielding comedy ‘Rape Upon Rape’ and featured music and lyrics by Laurie Johnson and Lionel Bart with a book by Bernard Miles. Set in London in the 1730s, the musical follows Hilaret Politic who intends to elope with Captain Constant. In a scuffle, Hilaret is separated from her maid Cloris and is set upon by the virile Ramble. Hilaret accuses Ramble of rape and the pair are brought before the corrupt Justice Squeezum. The cast of ‘Lock Up Your Daughters’ included Stephanie Voss, Hy Hazell and Richard Wordsworth. Following its successful run at the Mermaid Theatre, a Broadway production staged by Alfred Drake (and featuring most of the London cast) was planned but closed on tour. ‘Lock Up Your Daughters’ was subsequently revived at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre in August 1962, running for over 500 performances.
