Herman Prime’s debut 12”, “Maajo” is a beautiful ode to spring and new birth. "Maajo" pays homage to Nigerian music, with its borrowed vocals from juju style’s King “Sunny” Ade. The track has a house foundation, which shows in its fat kick drums and sub bass groove, while the hypnotic Rhodes melody harkens to early minimal electronic pioneers such as Manuel Göttsching.

The B-side, “Maajo (Take Four)”, is a track of its own, a mutant revision of the emotional original. This version is not just a slightly altered copy but an electronic dub that takes the original to a completely different direction. Talking drums and a polyrhythm structure maintain the dreamy, Nigerian feel, but the dystopic, detuned synths have the scent of an underground techno bunker.

Jon Thureson, alias Herman Prime, has been open-mindedly DJing and producing music for 15 years. He has a broad understanding of musical language which helps him to infuse his various influences. With his strong background in house and disco, Jon often reaches beyond the limits of both genres towards new frontiers. His love affair with West African styles and electronic Krautrock shows on “Maajo”.

Seagull Records is a spin-off from disco rework factory Kojak Giant Sounds and “Maajo” is a slightly moodier and housier departure from the labels usual repertoire.

Citizens of Vice proudly return with release number 60 — a record that’s been in the works for quite some time. This latest EP comes from Bali-based DJ/live outfit Gold Suite, marking a fresh shift in their sound and style. We’ll let Gold Suite tell you more about it below.

These two tunes were written back in January, when after a busy December of night-time DJ gigs, we were really needing to sink our teeth into something other than house and disco in the January downtime.

I started to get interested in '70s library music, loving the idea that these tunes were thrust into existence in a matter of hours, to then take on a new, long life as a fundamental part of something bigger. I had in my mind the idea of composing incidental music for a resort that was lost in time.

Laura was learning to play the bass guitar at the time so we got to it.

'Analog Swell' was recorded very quickly, originally with a drum machine that was later replaced with a mono drum kit. 'Coast Along' came later, and was the first Gold Suite recording with vocals. This felt like a real turning point, as these simple compositions could suddenly become so much more evocative.

Simple, no frills, and mixable if you really want to. We hope you enjoy them.

Resista is back for number 10 and this time we welcome Toby Tobias to the family!

Toby has been behind plenty of widely regarded records over the past decade, putting his hand to a large number of releases for labels such as Rekids, Delusions Of Grandeur, More Music, Let’s Play House and most recently ESP Institute.

Needless to say, Toby knows his way around the studio but he’s also equally adept when it comes to cutting and splicing, as you can hear on the title track of this special 12” for Resista, re-editing and embellishing this slice of pure sunshine. For the flip, Toby puts his production hat back on, building a deep, afro-influenced house track and deftly layering the same vocalist on top. Pure balearic bliss!

291out ensemble return on "Fly By Night" with another well orchestrated project by Riccio. The latest release on FBNM, 291out - Habbanera is thematically inspired by the 1982 Italian film score, "No Grazie il Caffè Mi Rende Nervoso" ie “No Thanks, Coffee Makes Me Nervous”.  It was originally composed by James Senese and directed by Lodovico Gasparini, “Habbanera” has only previously been released on Senese’s self titled LP in 1983.
This four tracker includes two new versions of the main title theme “Habbanera” and two remixes by the two Italian pioneers of house music and the balearic sound; Leo Mas and Fabrice.
291out “Original Version” is a cover of the main score theme, which also features on Senese’s 1983 LP ; the “Alternate Version” is also taken from the movie, but from a different scene, which has the same melody of the opening theme but with a different rhythm, never having been released before and completely reassembled by 291out. Leo Mas & Fabrice provide two different cuts, one pitched-down boogie slow jam and one 4/4 dance-floor banger.
