Born from eponymous LYL’s radioshow, Feng Shit Records becomes Décalé’s sublabel for new imprints and scattered directions: a balanced perception between softening aural breeze and spiritual dance substrate.

Castalia Drops delivers a futuristic testament to club / no-club music, rooted in melancholy, and inspired by the fountain of Castalia, whose waters promise poetic creation to all those who drink from it or listen to its murmur. 14 tracks from forewarned visionaries (Epsilove and Christian Coiffure); the freshly illuminated (OKO DJ, Dhakira, Explorations Silencieuses); an ode to aural breezes (Eiger Drums Propaganda, Aloe, AM Khamsaa); psychedelics rituals (Gavr, One Foot Step & Nitrate); and spiritual dance substrates (Tai Rona, 808Hz, Yolek, Antoine).

The 4-sided insert contains inspirational texts and poems provided by some of the artists in their languages of preference like Romanche and Hungarian, among others.

The flowers hung out over the water, the riverbed a beautiful masquerade of bright beautiful colours which danced and glistened in the reflection of the pond. Boats moved slowly past, taking in the sights of the elegant gardens which drifted by. From time to time they could hear the echoes of birds in the trees which overlooked this special place in the outback of a country lost to the depths of time, Amuka was serene. 

Tai Rona appears on a new split compilation from Feng Shit, a sub label of Decale, designed to highlight electronic and experimental music from contemporary artists. The first release on the newly launched imprint also includes music from the likes of OKO Dj and Christian Coiffure. 

This track, called "Amuka",  by Tai Rona is a highlight.

Big Science Records presents Leo James’ latest release Féth Fíada, a distillation of the musical ideas James has been developing in his recent work. A collection of hypnotic repetitions, held saxophone notes, synthesiser drones and beautiful chords, the record is full of life and rich in texture. The music is an exploration of disconnection, longing and catharsis, and is both deeply personal and wide open to the listener - emotion hidden in plain sight.  

In recent years James has released records with Patience, Berceuse Heroique, Neubau and his own imprint Body Language. In 2020 he was asked to remix a song from the collaborative project of Ariel Kalma and Gilbert Cohen, released on Versatile Records. In July 2021, James collaborated with renowned Aboriginal artist Daniel Boyd for his solo exhibition 'Treasure Island' at Kukje Gallery, Seoul. Boyd created a 6 minute video work that was projected alongside his paintings. Titled Rivers, the projection was soundtracked by Leo James' track of the same name.

The record will be out on end of November 29t 2021. Limited Edition 100x 12 inches records, distributed by Rubadub, and available as digital on Spotify, iTunes and Deezer soon.

The second foray into Séance Centre's “Speculative Ethnography” series is an icy and tender missive of glacial piano, ambient electronics, samples, treated sax, and drum machine rhythms from snowbound Canadians Joseph Shabason & Vibrant Matter (Kieran Adams).

Shabason and Adams have been collaborating for years, forming the production team behind the celebrated experimental synth pop trio Diana, but their relationship has often been fraught with creative tension. Fly Me to the Moon is their ‘make up’ EP, a redemptive voyage through uncertain times. During lockdown Adams found refuge in routine, practicing drums every morning in Shabason’s Toronto studio. Afterwards, the pair would chat in the alleyway behind the studio, drinking espressos, a daily practice that became an antidote to the chaos of pandemic life. Through this daily ritual a creative spark was reignited and they decided to start exchanging ideas, but rather than working together in the studio as they had in the past, the circumstances required them to collaborate remotely. Through this distanced connection the youthful tension and ego of the past eroded, evolving into a deep trust.

Escaping the gravitational pull of a planet in distress, the duo composed a sonic love letter adrift in weightless ambient electronics, fourth world jazz visions, and cyborg IDM riddim technologies — an ode to a long friendship which has strength because it has travelled through so many galaxies and vortices. Who says you can’t fall in love all over again - ‘Fly me to the moon / Let me play up there with those stars / Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars’.

Fly Me to the Moon is a limited edition pressing with risograph printed insert and designed for future archives.

You Can Can is an echoed affirmation, an album which traces song forms around silence, field recordings, and degraded analog memories. This is folk music transmogrified and mutated, as if recorded and reconstructed in Pierre Schaffer’s GRM studio.

Not your typical Mariposa folk duo, the group is comprised of Toronto avant-music scene stalwarts, vocalist Felicity Williams (Bernice, Bahamas) and bricolage artist and synthesist Andrew Zukerman (Fleshtone Aura, Badge Epoch). The album feels like a somnambulant conversation, fragmented and half-remembered with Williams’ vocals traveling through a landscape of field recordings and Zukerman’s saturated concrète topographies. It is an electro-acoustic assemblage, both analog and digital, comprised of air, electricity, minerals, wood, and water. Although the album nods towards traditional forms of folk and musique concrète (if at this point it can be called a traditional form), it is outwardly and inwardly contemporary; non-linear, citational, opaque, and sui generis. In a way it feels like a sonic index of the narrative experiments found on the infamous Language school-related publisher The Figures, in the work of Lyn Hejinian, Clark Coolidge, and Lydia Davis. In the musical continuum, the album picks up where Linda Perhacs left off in the early 70’s—explored by Gastr Del Sol in the ‘90s—a convergence of rural acoustic idioms and urban avant-electronics. This is country music for the discerning cosmopolitan citizen of the 21st Century.

Origin of You is a startling new collaboration between Chinese-Australian composers Mindy Meng Wang 王萌 and Becky Sui Zhen, forming spontaneously one wintry afternoon in Melbourne and enduring with bonds that will last longer than a lifetime.

The debut release from these two auspicious artists revolves around three images that form the basis of their musical exploration: 空 (Kōng), or Emptiness; 疼 (Téng), or Pain; 气 (Chi), sometimes known as ‘Energy’.

It is from within these motifs that the central themes of this startling collaboration emerge. As described by Mindy Meng Wang 王萌 --

“This is an album about two artists who got together and formed a sisterhood. It’s about understanding life, family and ourselves. It’s about transforming from being a woman into a mother. And it’s about human connection. We are not related, but we find a connection that comforts us as much as family does.”

The record centres around a continual shift in an individual’s understanding of identity and of the self; coming to terms with who you are, where you are from, and where you will go. It is about life, death, and birth. And it is about transformation: from daughter into woman, woman into mother, from outsider into friend.

Ultimately, the album is a celebration of family, friendship and connection, grieving the irreplaceable loss of some bonds while celebrating their existence and finding joy in the creation of others. It is an album that marvels at the amazing capacity of emotion at our fingertips, the pain and joy that lie waiting at every turn of the path, the immeasurable feeling as yet undiscovered in the depths of ourselves.

O.S.S. (Open Sound System) is a new collaborative project from music producers @unknown-mobile and @napmusick  
A product of friendship, O.S.S. was made by Daniel Rincon and Levi Bruce over a course of impromptu studio sessions and hangouts between Canadian coasts. O.S.S. The EP features five suites, which aim to invoke “god rays,” - the rays of sunlight that are amplified by the passing of clouds at dusk. Luminous, deep and subtle tones mimic crepuscular light in a way that feels cinematic and spiritual. We’re happy to premiere the second suite on the EP, "Blanga," a meandering sweet tune, featuring a collage of samples, synths, Romplers and VSTs.
