Praise You: a Romanthony tribute mix by Marcel Vogel

EPM Podcast 168 – comes from Petals in Sound (Louise Baldwin). The Liverpool-based producer and DJ has been making a name for herself in the underground house music scene for the past few years, crafting a unique sound which blends hazy, jazzy house music with deep, atmospheric electronic textures. Here we find Louise continuing her commitment to deep and atmospheric house with a mix that brings in tracks from Idan Hana, Cinthie, Bernardo Mota, Moonee, Taren Gopi, Roy Ford, Polytunnel, an exclusive from Louise’s own Petals In Sound and more.

Louise’s vast taste in music plays a huge part in the way her productions play out to the listener, as she draws influence from her love of disco, house and acid combined with guitar-focused genres such as shoegaze. She cites Daniel Avery as a big influence as well as the likes of Space Ghost and Retromigration.

Petals In Sound’s catalogue includes releases with well-respected labels such as Closer to Truth and she is a mainstay on Berlin’s Dirt Crew Recordings, having worked with a diverse roster of remixers from the likes of Bruise, Henrik Villard, Kaysoul, and Glassjaw frontman Daryl Palumbo. 

Petals In Sound’ music has gained support from Deeper Shades of House, NTS Radio, Rinse FM and the Sloth Boogie Radio Show, and her recent Dial Tone EP received critical acclaim in Chicago’s 5 magazine.

Her DJ mix for EPM includes a brand new, soon to be released Petals’ track titled ‘Furusato’ (Mole Music). This track showcases once more her attention to detail in terms of arrangement, creating depth and interest with luscious pads and intricate melodies against a backdrop of beautiful lush house textures.

Taken from our set on Monday evening as the boats returned from the secret island party 10pm - midnight.

Love int. has always had a special place in our hearts and with it the beach stage has kind of become a home from home over the years. 
We’re always very grateful for the ongoing support and involvement. Like a residency the regulatory can bread a strong understanding and confidence about how and what to play. This set genuinely comes from our love for the festival, and with it highlights our approach threading a story to showcase our style and vibe. There’s some imperfections but hopefully that adds to the authenticity of the moment.

Tambores En Benirras is the alias of Graham Newby AKA 'DJ Gripper'. A month after the release of his debut album as Tambores En Benirras, 2021’s fabulous Orbe Dotodo, Graham Newby’s life changed forever. After years of living with a visual impairment, his sight had deteriorated so much that he was declared “registered blind”. For a man who had spent decades dividing his time between travelling, DJing, running clubs and lengthy sessions in his studio, it was a genuinely life-changing moment.

It was against this backdrop, and the need to alter his working methods that Ondas Horizontales, the second Tambores En Benirras album, took shape. Inspired by a mixture of daydreaming, visualisation, immersion in other people’s music (escapism that provided mood enhancement rather than a specific set of ideas) and long periods spent soaking up the sun in Ibiza, the album is the most vividly detailed, sonically colourful, and sun-soaked collection that Newby has released to date.

Newby’s declining sight forced him to stop spending long spells staring at a screen, undoubtedly slowing the production process. Yet it also allowed him to reconnect with his emotions, appreciate the storytelling and mood-shifting potential of music, and mine mind’s eye memories of places and spaces that have meant much to him over the years.

Slowly but surely, Berlin-based English producer @athlete-whippet's sumptuous sounds have charmed the house and disco world. With serious musical chops backing up his dance floor grooves, it's no wonder Toy Tonics have snapped him up to be part of their family, and his work continues to become ever-more sophisticated and infectious. He treats us to some works-in-progress in the mix alongside some of his tastiest morsels to date.


*How would you describe your sound?*

It’s sort of ever evolving but I’d say the thing that always plays a big role is that it’s very much a hybrid between club music and songwriting. I come from a background of playing in bands to production, and DJing was actually the last piece of the puzzle for me.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

Many, many people and things. These days I’ve come back to composing my songs on instruments rather than in the box and started singing a lot more again. I’m also so fortunate to be part of a wonderful scene of artists between Berlin and London which is a constant inspiration.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

It’s been a nice chance to delve back into things from the early days, something that I rarely ever do. I’ve started off with new stuff from recent records which represents my sound now, and then as I build up the confidence, I go into some current work in progress somewhere in the middle before going back to the very roots at the end.
