Odion Iruoje aka “Sound President” was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s and credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria and the guy who produced all of Fela’s revolutionary early material from 1970-73. “Ikebe”, an African highlife boogie-funk killer, came out on Iruoje’s only solo recording, “Down To Earth”. Released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, “Down To Earth” was only ever distributed in small quantities. In 2016 Soundway reissued “Down To Earth”, limited to 1.000 copies.
 
Fusing West African funk and highlife guitar riffs with jazzy grooves and unique Nigerian vocals, “Ikebe” is a go-to body mover that warms up every dancefloor.

If you’ve visited Ibiza in the last few years, there’s a fair chance you’ll have encountered DJ Pippi and Willie Graff. The experienced duo has been DJing together on the White Isle for years, finding time between sundown sets to make music together in Italian veteran Pippi’s home studio.

The pair’s first collaborative EP dropped on Drumpoet Community way back in 2007, with the belated follow-up appearing a decade later on Compost Disco. Here they make their bow on Leng with the “Lunares EP”, a typically warm and woozy collection of cuts named after the Spanish word for “polka dots” (a fashionable item in Spain and the Balearic islands throughout the 1980s).

They begin with the slow-burn sunrise bliss of “Lunares”, a shuffling and glassy-eyed affair in which evocative, emotion-rich strings, heady vocal samples, echoing sitars and lilting guitars slowly rise above a thickset backing track rich in dubby bass, swelling pads, starry electronics and snappy drums. Capable of tugging at the heartstrings, it’s a sublime slab of mood-enhancing bliss perfect for both weary dancing and sofa-bound relaxation.

“Island Visitors” is, if anything, even more spaced-out and intoxicating. Employing extra-slow beats and a prominent jazzy bass guitar part, the pair invites us to get locked in to a chuggy rhythm. Throw in druggy synth lines, tactile electric piano stabs and some suitably cosmic effects and you have a hallucinatory treat that would no doubt have gained the approval of the late, great Andrew Weatherall.

The EP’s final musical moment “Saxolicious” lives up to the premise of the title, with Pippi and Willie wrapping snaking, effects-laden saxophone solos around a languid, slow motion groove bristling with hazy intent. Expect chiming electric piano chords, dreamy pads, rolling grooves and another fine bassline that will worm its way into your subconscious, spark up a spliff and stay there for days.

Legendary Adriatic DJ and producer Verdo doesn't release often, but when he does you need to listen. He always has one foot on the dancefloor, while the other makes a leap into outer space.

Resident at the infamous Gratis Club in Senigallia, a skilled musician who brings virtuoso playing and someone with his own immediately identifiable sound, Verdo is a real hidden treasure. The Italian has
previously released on Danny Was A Drag King and also this label back in 2017, and mixes up anything from afro to acid, disco to downtempo in his grooves.

'Symmetry' kicks off in strident fashion, with throwback piano chords lighting up the airwaves as stomping drums make you move. It's the sound of an all out celebration of the sort we have all been missing recently. 
'Babbions' strikes a more tender note, with warm chords rising up through the cosmic arps and long legged drums. It's a twinkling track that glows bright and lifts your spirits no end.
'Procida' layers up more retro-future chords with bubbling melodies and star-gazing pads that will soundtrack sunsets by the sea in perfect fashion. 
"Second Trip' is a thoughtful track that sinks you into warm grooves, with shimmering keys that bring the romance. This one also comes as a bonus beatless version for lush ambient escapism and sentimental moments.

Verdo's back, and back in style.

At the start of 2020 a fellow DJ/vinyl collector, Tom B, invited me to come and spin at the March edition of legendary Avenida Brasil, one of the longest running BR-themed parties in Paris. He also challenged me to perform a live set on my MPC, specifically made for that night. Unfortunately a few weeks later everything was cancelled. But I kept on making beats, while sampling my Brazilian records. Weeks later this
album was born… It is the most personal album yet, it is an homage to my family’s Brazilian heritage and a dedication to my mother.

When I was still a small child, some of my very first music memories were the many faces of MPB artists “smiling” at me from the covers of my mother’s vinyl collection. I was born in Zagreb to a Portuguese mother (who was raised in Rio de Janeiro) and a Croatian father and grew up listening to Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento but also to other, less worldly known but very important artists whose brilliant music my mother collected in the early 70s. This collection of 10” records called “História da Música Popular Brasileira - MPB” was at the time released by Edições Abril and was distributed and sold at many newspaper stands all over Brazil. My mom, being a true music lover, bought the whole collection. Not long after, when her family was moving back from Brazil to Portugal, all the records travelled by ship with her. The same year after marrying my dad, she moved to Zagreb taking again the collection with her. Another journey the records made
was when our family moved to Lisbon in 1992, with a one year stop in Rome.

Now, I am very happy to have the collection with me here in Amsterdam. They are part of my family's multi- cultural heritage and a living proof that great music can stand the test of time.
