At the vanguard of Melbourne's bustling underground music scene you’ll find Surprise Chef. A band very much on the rise, who with two exceptional albums under their belts, are picking up a rapidly swelling fanbase across the world. Working out of the College of Knowledge stable (their home / studio / record label namesake), the band’s take on instrumental cinematic soul and funk has connected with listeners across multiple scenes and genres. Their intoxicatingly laidback sound, which pairs expertly crafted hooks with a seriously funky, watertight rhythm section, has earned them a wide appeal and made their tracks ripe for interpretation.

Rounding off the package is the remix from https://soundcloud.com/harvey-sutherland. Having made international waves since 2013 with his unique take on dance music, Harvey has long been on https://soundcloud.com/mrbongo’s remix radar, but until now we hadn’t managed to get that ambition over the line. This time around the stars aligned perfectly. Surprise Chef and Harvey Sutherland are both Melbourne residents and they had already been working on projects together. The band set things up and Harvey chose to remix ‘New Ferrari’ from their latest album, ‘Daylight Savings’. His take on the track sees things venturing into dubby-disco territory. A dreamy, cosmic, bass-heavy, sweeping synth-led workout, that retains yet reinterprets the catchy-as-hell hooks from the original track. A roller with serious muscle!

The 14 tracker will land via Berlin’s Toy Tonics label and glides from disco to jazz, house and funk and features key collaborations with the likes of Jitwam, Eliza Rose, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange & his close friends. After having met Mathias  Kapote  Modica, creative mind behind Germany’s well respected Toy Tonics label three years ago, East London born Cody Currie understood Kapote and his international TT Crew have the perfect understanding for his talents and share the same visions and so Cody joined the TT crew and released three EPs with the German label. Now finally he steps up to present his highly anticipated debut album ‘Lucas’. The 14 track LP is set for release 21 October 2022, with a string of pre-singles to drop until then. The roots of Cody’s artistry runs deep, hailing from Leytonstone in East London by his father a fashion designer and his Spanish mother a music writer, it was inevitable that Cody would follow suit in the world of creativity. Curries keen ear and penchant for retro disco licks, chopped keys, and broken beats have landed him also with 1 off releases on other notable labels like Razor-N-Tape, Dan Shake’s Shake Records. The past few years Cody found himself in the midst of a fresh and unique buzz, taking over Europe, predominantly in Berlin and London, as he bridges the gap between jazz and house music with his energetic DJ sets, talented instrumental skills and effortless swag. Playing the big Toy Tonics Jam happening all over Europe and similar to other artists on the TT label‘connecting the dots’ between live and electronic music has garnered Cody a range of support in the press and radio world with fans including Pete Tong, Rolling Stone, Jamz Supernova, Mixmag and Gilles Peterson, with some journalists describing him as "The Tom Misch of jazzy house". This debut album, like his EPs, represents the new essence of jazz burgeoning out of London’s youth scene of today. Cody doesn't use any samples, only live instruments, vocals and great chord combinations, a nod towards his music school studies in London before moving over to Berlin. Like most of the other artists on Toy Tonics and similar to Kapote himself, Cody comes from playing jazz piano and playing in bands and combines this real musician’s attitude and knowledge with his skills as an electronic producer and extremely talented DJ/selector. This combination of background and skills create that unique sound that Cody (and many Toy Tonics artists) have. On Lucas, Cody defines his work by enjoying the collaborative process with other talented artists such as Eliza Rose and Ziggy(Freedom Zeitgeist Energy Exchange), as well as some of Cody’s close personal friends like Jitwam, Ally McMahon, Andreas Konand more. Currie comments on the album, saying:“Lucas LP is a collection of tracks which I've either done myself around the world recording in different places, or collaborating with my friends. The music reflects my enjoyment of the musical process, and I'd say it’s inspired a lot by George Duke and Frank Zappa, the disco and funkier stuff from the 70s and 80s. Dan Shake, Kaidi Tatham, Jamie 3:26 on Toy Tonics! Yes. Toy Tonics lead artist Cody Currie released his debut album on the Berlin label last year and now here come the remixes! Pure dancefloor joy is guaranteed with this release. The names speak for themselves. And they really made effective DJ weapons out of Cody's very organic sounding, warm, soul-driven jazzy house songs. 

Cody by now doesn't need a big introduction anymore. He is one of the „hot“ names from London’s new house scene (even if he lives in Berlin) and being the only one who has made a collabo with Eliza Rose created a certain buzz not just in UK. (they recorded the tracks Danger, Moves, Night Sky released on Cody's debut album Lucas).

Since the album release Cody is playing worldwide solo shows but also along with DJs such as Honey Dijon, Parcels or Myd from Ed Banger.

South London producer Ben Hauke takes a sonic excursion to South America via Lewisham for a new seven track release for Far Out Recordings. While littered with Afro-Latin percussion, and samples of obscure Brazilian, Cuban and Colombian records, Only Old stays true to Ben’s distinctly London identity, with a record that fluctuates between house, broken beat and instrumental hip-hop. 
Having collaborated with the likes of Nubya Garcia and Joe Armon Jones, Ben Hauke stands at the electronic end of London’s new jazz movement. Currently working on new releases with more of a focus on live instrumentation, Ben titled the release ‘Only Old’ as it leans more heavily on his foundational approach to music making: an idiosyncratic, almost brazen sampling style in productions bursting with personality.  
Always full of character and style, Hauke’s productions have seen him likened to Theo Parrish and Madlib, with an altogether physical approach to sound. Title track ‘Only Old’ is moody broken beat with eerie sampled vocals and piano. ‘Get Up To Get Down’ is a light n’ breezy summer house stepper, while Brazil-inspired ‘Runners’ sounds as if it was made for MF Doom. 
Only Old will be released on 180g Vinyl and digitally 20th July. Sleeve design by fellow South London based artist Samuel Lloyd.

Production heroes Moodymann and Kenny Dope revisit one of electronic music’s foundation records, Rude Movements by SunPalace, with brand new remixes issued on BBE Music’s vinyl-only offshoot imprint ALIM.

Presented on strictly limited 7” vinyl, Moodymann and Kenny Dope pay tribute to a New York Loft classic first made famous by David Mancuso, which strongly influenced both artists early in their careers, as well as helping to shape the early House Music movement in the hands of Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, Frankie Knuckles and Danny Krivit among many others.

Two of the modern electronic scene’s most consistent innovators and elevators, Moodymann and Kenny Dope were selected by SunPalace producer Mike Collins himself to rework the track. Sadly, Mike passed away in late 2018 before either version was completed, but as a fan of both artists, we’re sure Mike would have been excited by both of these loving and reverent revisions to his iconic work.

Recorded in 1981s at Mike’s home studio in London, ‘Rude Movements’ was originally released as the B-Side to a track called ‘Winning’. A true Brit-funk oddity, the track’s improvised nature and lack of vocal hooks initially consigned it to obscurity, until its pristine sonics and irrepressible groove caught the ear of David Mancuso and he presented it at his already influential Loft Party.

Moodymann’s remix retains the ‘jammed’ feel of Rude Movements, introducing stellar flute, sax and piano solos over the groove, while remaining utterly faithful to the original vibe.

Kenny Dope’s ‘Dancefloor Powder’ version adds a vintage Afro-Latin drum break into the mix, while showcasing the original’s epic synth solo.

A deluxe double vinyl package containing extended versions of these remixes, plus several more, is planned for release on BBE Music in 2021. ...

Dan Kye is the mysteriously evoked moniker from multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocal sensation Jordan Rakei. The New Zealand-born artist - who now resides in London - presents his first long-player from Dan Kye, ‘Small Moments’, on Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section INTL. An ode to the dancefloor, the musical project was born out of Jordan’s lockdown experience, created from the comfort of his own home. 

Recorded with just a laptop, extra live instruments and guest musicians, ‘Small Moments’ seamlessly transcends across electronica, jazz and funk, with each genre being effortlessly fused with Jordan’s melancholy vocals. Allowing himself to push the boundaries, Jordan’s Dan Kye moniker draws on the energetic and uplifting elements of house and techno and perfectly mixes it with the sultry vocals and emotion that come with the live elements we know and love from Jordan Rakei. The record offers listeners a journey through more floor-heavy tracks such as ‘Mogeri’ and ‘Raro’ to more groove infused offerings such as ‘Rainbow Road’ (which is named after one of the maps in Mario Kart and inspired by the energy of Prince’s iconic live concert at The Aladdin in Las Vegas), whilst tracks, like ‘Sober’, take on a more lyrical and anthemic feel.
