UK based Contours and Yadava team up to release the "Cosmic Echoes" EP, built over numerous jam sessions fusing live percussion, bass, drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings to create a raw EP full of soul and warmth. Released September 4, jointly by Flumo and ANMA Records.

Roots Magic EP, the latest from Akio Nagase, a veteran of the Japanese underground, is an exercise in lean, funky, dubby deep house. Despite its heady mix of techno, acid house, and dub, Akio finds a way to incorporate each track with a strong sense of colourfulness, playfulness, and looseness. His meticulous, yet unshowy craft, results in a degree of approachability and levity that is rare when it comes to these subgenres. 

The range and diversity of sounds and instrumental palettes on the EP is impressive to say the least. Acid Teng Shing Hang, the B-side opener, opens with echoing cymbals before a sufficiently squelchy acid line and tight drum pattern emerge, which then suddenly and seamlessly transition into a killer bassline and acid house groove, replete with ominous, off-kilter vocal samples. The track is chock full of disparate, eclectic elements that give it its lifeblood: an enchanted, bellowing female voice, bongos, and a sitar, to name just a few. Here, Akio displays his music-making M.O in full swing: nimble and voracious in approach, tongue-in-cheek in delivery, yet laser-focused in harnessing the power of its groove. 

Releasing on vanguard Singapore-based imprint, Darker Than Wax, on September 4th, this release marks Akio’s only second release of new music after almost a decade-long hiatus. If this EP is any indication, that hiatus has only fed his creativity and allowed him to refine and develop his vibrant approach to dance music.

An open road presents opportunities and risks; unknown and exciting prospects could lie ahead, if they chose to embark on the trip. Better to keep moving than to stay stationary, best to keep going forward than to look back. After all it's about the journey, not the ending...

The next outing on Mawimbi Records is a collaborative release from Black Atlantic co-founder and resident James Stewart and Ghanaian kologo musician Ayuune Sule. After booking kologo music star King Ayisoba for several shows in his native Lyon, Stewart struck up a friendship with Sule and being enchanted by both his vocals and his humility invited him to record vocals for two of his demos, resulting in a crossover of contemporary styles and traditional kologo music. 

Shared in two parts, one deep and percussive and the other a four-to-the-floor take, the aptly titled "Where Are We Going?" communicates a message of caring for one another and our communities while we are unsure what the future holds. It gets the remix treatment from Worldwide FM resident Simbad under his SMBD moniker who offers two versions: an emotive house cut and a spiritual dubbed-out version.

Earlier this year the Aussie producer Zen In Space dropped his debut album Earth Tones on Pharmaceutical Audio, a record label but know primarily as a trespass series of gatherings occurring in industrial/demolition sites in urban Australia. 

In the follow up rework project Allysha Joy strips back 'Jannali' in almost emancipatory fashion, creating an ethereal warmth from a groove sojourned in a state of vocal confession.
