This is my first or second (and possibly last) deliberate attempt to write a "happy" song, given most other tunes I come up with are either sad or angry or both. Turns out it is quite difficult to write something happy that doesn't make me cringe, and I am not sure I succeeded here...  most happy songs I don't hate are somewhat wistful at the same time, so I wrote about some happy memories spanning a few decades, all involving friendships/situations that have since then changed quite a lot. So, an attempt to preserve the happiness of the initial memories despite knowing nothing lasts forever. Or something like that.

Also, I recorded this in the middle of the snottiest of colds, so the voice is a bit more croaky then usual, but most notes are in the right places which is all I ask for a first demo :)

It’s the first day at school, and I’m nervous as hell,
the other kids seem way too cool, this isn’t going too well,

A knock on the door, and that’s the first time I hear your
Footsteps in the hall, and your voice in my ear,

And just like that you turn a stranger into someone I know.

A tap on my window, my guitar in your hands, 
You tell me come out and say hi to your friends,
You say they’re all going out but you’d rather stay in
With me and put on a movie, let the story begin.

Far out at sea, a thousand miles away from all the trouble,
Sun is burning down today, I jump in, and feel the bubbles 
In my hair, you got the camera and a smile on your face
I swear this ship is sailing us towards a better place.

Back on dry land, the summer’s gone, the tan is fading away,
We’re moving on from the sand and swimming, but the singing has stayed with us,
We serenade your neighbour with our favourite songs,
It’s getting later and later, while he keeps stomping along.

I got this treasure chest of memories,
A lot of the very best of them are bittersweet,
Now that those glorious days are gone
And I’m notoriously late for moving on,
But the melancholy fades when I hum along and turn those 
minor thirds into a happy song.

Skyline Forecast

Like everyone, I dream. I seem to dream a lot, and although I don't have recurring dreams, I do dream about someone from my past on a regular basis, yet we've not spoken for 34 years. Although we live fairly close to each other, I've seen her a handful of times over the years.

This was written after one such dream. We met, we talked about the years gone by, and we laid ghosts to rest.

Alas, it was but a dream. I awoke with a feeling of sadness and regret as I always do after dreaming of her.

I love listening to & creating ambient, dark ambient, avant-garde & experimental electronica (and the occasional beatscape). I have no professional aspirations  - I just really like creating music / manipulating sounds. It's my way of relaxing after a hard day at the office. All my tracks are produced using monitoring headphones (Audix A140) so I recommend that you listen to my music through headphones. My DAW of choice is FL Studio. I also use Reason every now & then.
