BEFORE THE CURFEW

There are several reasons to release an unscheduled podcast today. Below we will explain each of them in detail — get ready to read a lot.

Firstly, today is 9.09, that is, the day of the Roland TR-909 drum machine. We won’t talk about how this piece of hardware influenced all electronic music, since this is a separate and very broad topic.

Secondly, we had at our disposal a conceptual hardcore techno mix from Kovyazin D, pieced together by him over a few months. Rips of old vinyl and rare finds from dusty hard drives subjected to forced remastering were used. By the way, this musical genre existed for only a couple of years in the early 90s, and having performed the role of a bridge from the new beat to gabber, it disappeared into oblivion. The conclusion is simple: there is very little such material in general, which makes this record especially interesting and valuable. Во-первых, сегодня 9.09, то есть день драм-машинки Roland TR-909. Рассказывать о том, как данная «железка» повлияла на всю электронную музыку не будем, так как это отдельная и очень обширная тема

Во-вторых, в нашем распоряжении оказался концептуальный хардкор-техно микс от Kovyazin D, по крупицам собранный им за несколько месяцев. В ход пошли рипы старого винила и редкие подвергнутые вынужденному ремастерингу находки с пыльных жестких дисков. Кстати говоря, этот музыкальный жанр просуществовал всего пару лет в начале 90-х, и выполнив роль мостика от нью-бита а габбе, исчез в небытие. Вывод простой: подобного материала в целом очень мало, что делает эту запись особенно интересной и ценной. Кроме того, вышеупомянутая машинка TR-909 особенно репрезентативна именно в этом жанре музыки — эту бочку ни с чем не спутать

Serge Jazzmate has been a fixture of Kyiv's music scene for quite some years. He is known as the co-founder of the legendary local house night, LOW, as well as a versatile dj who always delivers perfectly crowd-pleasing selections. 

The series is updated on a weekly basis with recordings of sets that have been played in our space since the beginning of the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Tune in and don't forget to support the Ukrainian army, volunteer organizations and funds, including the ∄ community fund which continues to support volunteer initiatives from representatives of our community.

The new live set from the Before The Curfew series, played by VH10 at Ground Floor on 19th November at the ∄ 4th Anniversary, is now available on SoundCloud.

VH10 is a Kyiv-based musician, producer, and live performer originally from the Donetsk region. Starting his musical journey with performances at Club 56, one of the first new venues after the Revolution of Dignity, the artist never stopped shaping his style, experimenting with sounds ranging from old-school to contemporary trance, progressive house, and breakbeat.

∄ is a cultural institution in Kyiv, established in 2019 on the territory of a former brewery, located at 41 Kyrylivska Street. It serves as a multifunctional space for club events like ∄ Community Events, Curated By, Enareї, for experimental music concerts like Miasma of the Real and other cultural events.

∄ also manages the in-house music label Standard Deviation. Established in September 2020, Standard Deviation is a multidisciplinary label for music, art and publishing, cultivating creative exchange between an aspiring Ukrainian scene and a global community.

K41 is the community-born name of the institution embraced and widely used by the public.
