Episode #031 – Please welcome Assistant Director Kimberly Cheatle, Office of Protective Operations. AD Cheatle oversees a special projects team that responds to operational, technical, and administrative issues at all levels of the organization; and directs staffing and logistical operations for the directorate and ten operational divisions to ensure divisions and events are properly resourced. Also, she works with the Technical Security Division to research, develop, and deploy technologies that reduce risks to protectees, protected facilities, and protected events. Prior to serving as Assistant Director, she served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office, providing oversight for all mission-related investigations, protective intelligence, and protective visits in the state of Georgia. Ms. Cheatle was appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in February 2016 as the Special Agent in Charge of the James J. Rowley Training Center (RTC). She later served as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Office of Training. Ms. Cheatle has served in numerous leadership roles throughout her 25-year career, including Special Agent in Charge of Strategic Planning and Policy, the Vice Presidential Protective Division, the Resident Agent in Charge, Grand Rapids, MI resident office, Assistant Inspector, Office of Inspection, Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, Vice Presidential Protective Division, and Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, RTC. Ep. #032 - Please welcome Deputy Chief Catrina Bonus; Catrina has served with the Secret Service for close to 25 years.  She began her career as an officer assigned to the White House Branch and throughout her career, she has risen steadily through the ranks with leadership assignments at all branches of the Uniformed Division including the White House, Foreign Missions, Naval Observatory, Special Operations – Magnetometer Operations Office, Office of the Chief, and the James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC). On August 5, 2018, Catrina was appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief; the Uniformed Division’s first female Deputy Chief. Her first assignment as Deputy Chief was at the White House, the largest branch within the Uniformed Division.  Her current assignment is at the James J. Rowley Training Center where she appreciates the opportunity to work amongst the JJRTC Training Staff to direct, coordinate, and implement policies and programs associated with Secret Service basic and advanced training and employee and leadership development for USSS trainees and employees.

Episode #033 - Please welcome Chief of the Enterprise Strategy Division, Robin Champ.  Before joining the Secret Service, Ms. Champ was the Chief of the Global Futures Office at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).  She developed a comprehensive methodology (to include stakeholder interviews, scenario-based planning, SWOT analysis, policy analysis, and crowdsourcing) to facilitate the development of the Agency’s Strategic Plan.  She spearheaded the introduction of Scenario-Based Planning in the organization and continues to be a frequent speaker on the subject.  Ms. Champ also led the Project on Advanced Systems and Concepts for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD), addressing key national security and CWMD issues through strategic studies and dialogues.  Ms. Champ co-leads the Federal Foresight Community of Interest (FFCoI.org).  She also is a guest lecturer on foresight at George Washington University’s “Mastering Strategy for the Public Sector” course.  In addition to a commendation from the Vice President of the United States, and her many awards for outstanding performance, Ms. Champ is a recipient of the DTRA Director’s Distinguished Civilian Service Medal.

Ep. #033 - Strategic Foresight with Ms. Robin Champ

Episode #034 - Please welcome Uniformed Division TREK Patrol Officer, Louis Lara.  After joining the Secret Service, he decided to broaden his law enforcement experiences by joining the TREK Program within the Uniformed Division's White House Branch. Since 2016, Ofc. Lara became a Nationally certified TREK trained officer, and helped restore and provide maintenance on all the branches’ fleet of TREK bicycles as 1 of 3 officers under the title of TREK mechanic within the Secret Service. Ofc. Lara's certifications include: TREK Officer, TREK Mechanic, NHTSA Instructor, and Crisis Intervention Team.

Before joining the Secret Service in November 2016, he completed multiple medical field internships and worked as a Therapeutic Support Staff member for Access Services where he worked with children, young adults, and adults with various levels of autism as well as other patients/clients with learning disabilities.

Episode #036 - Please welcome Investigative Protection Officer Patrick Rafferty. Mr. Rafferty serves in the New York Field Office and came to the Secret Service after retiring as a Captain in the New York Police Department.  Mr. Rafferty served the NYPD for 25 years and in 2010 came to the Secret Service.  Prior to the NYPD, he served in the U.S. Army and received his BA in Criminal Justice and a Master’s in Public Administration.  Mr. Rafferty said this is the best job in the world!

Episode #037 Please welcome Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, ATSAIC Brad Beeler. 

Special Agent Beeler started his career in the Chicago Field Office in the counterfeit and organized crime squads, he then became a polygrapher where he started the next phase of his career doing polygraph examinations.  He then went on to serve on the Bush Protective Division as a shift agent and shift leader.  After completing his assignment in protection, SA Beeler became a polygraph examiner in the St. Louis Field Office; where he assisted state and local law enforcement by conducting hundreds of child exploitation and homicide polygraph examinations, conducted USSS applicant screening and criminal and protective intelligence examinations throughout the United States.  SA Beeler now is assigned as the Secret Service liaison at the federal polygraph school, where he serves as the course manager/instructor for interview techniques. He routinely speaks at regional and national conferences on topics related to polygraph, child exploitation investigations, and elicitation techniques. SA Beeler received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Criminology from the University of Missouri – St. Louis.  SA Beeler is the recipient of the 2019 Forensic Hero Award and the 2015 Secret Service Special Agent of the Year Award.

Episode #039 Please welcome Stephanie Semadeni, one of our Occupational Health Nurses in the Safety, Health and Environmental Programs Division. Stephanie has been with the Secret Service since 2013. One of the main functions of her position as a nurse in SAF is to review medical exams and make medical qualification determinations for those enrolled in the Mandatory Medical Examination Program. In her role as Wellness Programs coordinator, Stephanie has used her background in health promotion, in conjunction with her nursing knowledge, to expand the health and wellness program offerings for employees. During the last 19 months, Stephanie has taken a prominent nursing role in SAF’s COVID response.

Standing Post Presents My First Foot Beat - Ep 006 - Jorge Martinez

Episode #050 - Please welcome DSS Michelle Christine to the show. Michelle is a Detection Systems Specialist (DSS) in the Special Operations Division, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of leaders and dignitaries in US airspace. She was part of the first wave of personnel in the DSS career when it was stood up about 17 years ago. As interesting as this is, in her spare time Michelle is also an elite athlete, a national ranked triathlete who has competed in triathlons across the world. In 2021 and 2022, she placed in the top 3 at several USA Triathlon National Championships and also qualified for world triathlon events in 2022 and 2023. Most recently, she was named the Virginia Commonwealth Games Adult-Female Athlete of the Year, an unexpected honor that required her peers to nominate and vote for her.

We were able to sit down and talk to her about what it takes to be an elite athlete competing on a world stage while balancing the pressures of a zero-fail mission at work and rearing a family. She discusses the triathlon community, her rigorous training regimen and the importance of a support network in her success.

Standing Post Presents My First Foot Beat - Ep. 014 - Sean Cherney

As a child, Uniformed Division Officer Leth Oun experienced some of the worst atrocities known to man: he grew up in Cambodia in the 1970s under the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot’s reign of terror. After years of brutality, he was able to flee Cambodia and made his way to America as a refugee, settling in Maryland. He learned English, graduated from high school and college and eventually joined the Secret Service after the September 11 attacks. As he prepares to retire after two decades with the agency, he sat down and discussed his life’s story, an incredible tale of overcoming adversity and trauma.

As a warning, this episode includes a discussion about death and torture by a brutal regime, both against humans and animals. Sensitive listeners or anyone listening with young children may want to skip this episode.

He spent a hot July day undergoing a truncated selection process for our Counter Assault Team, part of our Special Operations Division. They went through the PT, weapons handling, obstacle courses and realistic scenarios that a CAT member could face on the job. At the end of this grueling day, he sat down with Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle to talk about his experiences and our agency.

Episode #002 – Welcome Dr. Lina Alathari, Chief of the National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) under the Protective Intelligence and Assessment Division (PID) for the Secret Service.

In this episode, we discuss enhancing school safety.  The United States Secret Service (USSS) released their National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) Operational Guide for Preventing School Violence on July 12, 2018.

Dr. Alathari talks with us about ensuring safe learning environments for elementary and secondary school students, educators, administrators, and others.  We discuss training the Secret Service personnel provides across the country free of charge to help aid in this pursuit.

NTAC’S recent releases include Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model, Enhancing School Safety Using a Threat Assessment Model Brief, USSS Report on Mass Attacks in Public Spaces.  Along with a quick reference guide titled, "Making Schools Safer."

Ep. #002 - National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) with Dr. Lina Alathari

Episode #007 Pt. 1 – Please welcome Secret Service legend Retired Special Agent Clint Hill in part one of our two-part series.  

Mr. Clint Hill is a retired U.S. Secret Service Agent who served five presidents and was in the motorcade in Dallas on November 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.  Mr. Hill will forever be remembered for his brave and swift actions as he leaped onto the back of the presidential limousine in an effort to protect President and Mrs. Kennedy while shots were being fired.

Mr. Clint Hill is an author and speaker.  He is a guest speaker at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and continues to participate with present-day Secret Service personnel in discussing protective activities and procedures.

Ep. #017 - Emergency Response Team with Sgt.Tech. Darrione Nall

Ep. #019 - This month we speak to Senior Special Agent William “Willie” Wind about his liaison work with Native American law enforcement and tribal gaming entities in Oklahoma and his Financial and Electronic Crimes Task Force work.

He began his Secret Service career in 1997 as a Special Agent in the Tulsa (OK) Resident Agency.  He worked there until 2001 when he was reassigned to the Forensic Services Division as a polygraph examiner in the Houston (TX) Field Office. Since 2010, Wind was selected for the collateral duty as the Special Emphasis Program Manager for American Indians/Alaska Natives in the Secret Service.  He has served in this role since 2010 where he is responsible for identifying agency policies, procedures, and practices that adversely impact American Indians/Alaska Natives within the USSS. As of 2020, SSA Wind works out of the Oklahoma City Field Office where he is currently the back-up supervisor for the United States Secret Service Oklahoma Financial and Electronic Crimes Task Force.

SSA Wind was also responsible for the coordination of initiatives mandated by the Department of Homeland Security and the White House which led to him co-developing the US Secret Service’s Wounded Warrior and Military Spouse Mentorship Program (a pilot program) and being requested by the White House to be a speaker at President Obama’s White House Tribal Youth Summit.  

SSA William Wind enjoys spending time with his family and is active within the Yardeka Muscogee (Creek) Indian Community.

Episode #029 Please welcome Lieutenant Maria Ruano of the Uniformed Division.  Lt. Ruano has served with the USSS for more than 14 years.  She started her career at the White House Branch before transferring to the Naval Observatory Branch and then on to the Counter Surveillance Unit for the Vice Presidential Protective Detail (VPPD).  Lt. Ruano was promoted to Sergeant in 2014 and then assigned to the White House Branch.  Then she was selected as a classroom instructor at the James J. Rowley Training Center for two years before getting promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and transferred to the Special Operations Division (SOD) back to the White House Branch.  In 2019, she was named as the Operations Lieutenant at SOD/ K9 where she is currently assigned.

The Secret Service was established July 5, 1865, solely to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S. currency during the Civil War. Today, the Secret Service's mission has expanded beyond the scope of counterfeit currency and is mandated by Congress to carry out the integrated missions of protection and investigations.
