The grandson of a Holocaust survivor, Jonathan Greenblatt now heads up the Anti-Defamation League, one of America's premier civil rights and human relations organizations. Prior to ADL, Jonathan was one of the founders of Ethos Brands and also served as Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and Director of the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation. On this episode of the Mean, Jonathan talks with Michael about his career journey, anti-Semitism trends in the United States, the dangers of the Alt-right and his strategy for leading the ADL into the future.

When he turned himself into police two days later, he told them that he had travelled to the city to, “Kill as many black men as possible.” This morning, the Anti-Defamation League of New York hosted a rally to condemn the murder, and to talk about the intersection of hate crimes and terrorism.

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, talks with Recode’s Kara Swisher about how the century-old nonprofit is evolving to fight antisemitism and other forms of extremism in the digital age. Greenblatt explains how online platforms have helped white supremacists inject their beliefs into the mainstream conversation and why companies like Twitter, Facebook and Google have so far failed to stop them. He says the ADL is now working directly with engineers at those organizations to confront the problem, and praises the potential of emerging tech like artificial intelligence and virtual reality for making social media — and society — saner. Greenblatt also discusses the right way for journalists to report on extremists like Richard Spencer and how Silicon Valley could make a big difference by having a “bias for good.”
