The Kurkkio Festival is a yearly gathering way up north in Swedish Lappland. Arranged in true DIY spirit with stages in a barn and an old storage building used for drying birch. It gathers the best DJs from Sweden and abroad for a weekend every summer. The recording is from the opening set of the festival on a beautiful afternoon.

Prima Musica (@primamusica) is a music label curated by Jak Sen and one that DanceDisocver has been following closely. Quite rare are the selections. Thus, I was pleasantly suprised when Jak Sen contacted me about a submission.

'I am not sure if you will Like it, this stuff probaly doesnt fit any podcast series :D ... but I remember you asked me about mix because of Tulacka Romance on @mutantradio and it is also not avarage mix. the point is I did one mixtape now basically just for me when I feel blue and now I am thinking maybe its good idea to post it, so I want to offer you first, it’s an emotional shit, but its real'.

„When are you going to take the rest of your records with you?“ my dad kept asking me for 18 years (since 2006). As a child growing up in the bavarian countryside I discovered 80s music through my very good friend and dj „Electronic Biets“. His strong passion for all kinds of music, led him to a mix of I-F „live in new york“ from 2001. He passed it on to me when I was 18 years old in 2002. i did not expect that this live recording would change my life forever. This mix was full of perfectly mixed and selected Italo Disco tracks. I found myself listening to the it for half a year, day in day out. I would come home from work, park the car in front or my parents house and listen to the mix in the car till it was finished. This was the level of appreciation I had for this music. By that time, I didn’t know what kind of music it was. It took some time and a lot of research till I found out, that the genre was called Italo Disco. From there on I started buying everything labeled „Italo Disco & 80s“. Luckily, I had a good payed job which made me finance all this random buys from all over europe. So I ended up with lots of records I did not know. All I was looking for, was that special Italo Disco sound, but of course I also came across New Beat, Dark Wave, NDW and all sorts of great music from the 70s and 80s. But back then I had a rather narrow focus, so when I moved to Berlin in 2005, I left all those „Non Italo“ records at my parents house. Finally, last year, I took the time to go through all the records, I left behind in 2005 and rediscovered so many nice tracks. Even some cool 90s techno stuff on 33rpm. I even found records that I bought again later on without knowing that I have them already. So I decided to make a mix with my „forgotten“ records.
Besides that, it was also an interesting challenge to be limited to a smaller amount of records (30-40) to create a mix from. And here you go with Part 1.

In 2023, I met Sandra and Hendrik, the minds behind Avec Plaisir Records, during their Helsinki trip. Sandra's sets blend Italo and rare disco, reflecting her dedication and warmth. Explore the interview and links below!

What were your first impressions of OKS?

The first time I heard of OK Sound was about a year ago, when I was invited to play at Kaiku and Olli told me about that box of second hand Italo 12"s that no one had seen yet. But the schedule that weekend was too tight to make it happen and see the shop. A few months later I came a second time to Helsinki with my partner Hendrik and we brought enough time. That was when we got to know Kris, who was play-grading HiNRG records in the shop, which caught my attention. I remember how he dropped that Jackie Touché record and I was immediately hooked and that started the conversation. I ended up buying another HiNRG gem that was on my list for a while (Far East Connection – Ready To Go) and which of course made it's way into this mix. I remember the store as a place with lots of stuff to discover. I went though the Dollar Bins (3€ crates in this case) and snatched some uptempo disco maxis as well – and when I thought I was through I got aware of the 7" boxes near the couch where I found that C. Dorian record, which has a great instrumental B-Side.  

If this mix can teleport listeners to some other dimension (or fictional world or whatever) where would it take them?

It is funny that you are asking this, because I recently thought this is really what my mixes do, pulling the listener into some other dimension or parallel world, where there's no boarders and people can move freely and be what they want to be without needing to fit into our recent system. I am finding my music in many different corners of the world – through research but also through the privilege of being able to travel. I usually follow my own personal taste more than trying to fit into a trend, that's probably why you will always hear me playing a lot of unknown stuff. After traveling to Mexico last year, a lot of Spanish vocals made it into my sets. So this specific mix probably takes you to Mexico's HiNRG club Patrick Miller but in this universe they would play so much more tunes with Spanish vocals and freaky Mandarin or Ex-Yugoslavian tunes.

Anything exciting planned this year?

Hendrik & I, we’re constantly looking for adventure. We just put together a small tour in Italy where we will travel from north to south within 10 days. I can’t imagine a year without seeing Bella Italia. Going to play Bellafesta Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day is definitely huge. Also we started planning an Asia tour, it will be most likely towards the end of the year.

What can we expect from Avec Plaisir Records in the near future?

In the very near future we’ll put out a stunning piece of adult listening music — the Crazy Temple LP — which was produced by five young Austrian guys around 1980. You wouldn’t believe they were not even of legal age when they recorded it but their music immediately spoke to me when I first listened to it four years ago. We’re bringing a beautiful selection of their songs plus three own re-edit versions on the flip side coming out by the end of March. We’ve had a long break after putting out the Stefan Egger Sound Station EP and didn’t quite know how to approach new projects, as tracking down rights-holders can be really exhausting. We had lots of ideas but literally no chance to clear the rights. But after stepping out of the shadow we will keep it rolling this year and AP 003 is already on the best way to get released in early summer as well. It’s gonna be a contemporary one by a young combo called “Suncream” from Munich. Working with them has been exciting so far and we can’t wait to see how it will be received by the music scene.
