Standards & Practices return with their second release this year, following the release of Krohn/Mjolsness’s superb Drummer EP.

The first proper Stave release since 2021’s collaboration with Karim Maas on UVB-76, Godless, Saints No Drum is a concise and definitive artistic statement from Jonathan Krohn that encompasses everything that made his previous releases so captivating, while taking the sound in exciting new directions.

Drum 1–4 display a level of refinement and restraint rarely heard in modern electronic music, and there’s a sustained atmosphere of brooding, simmering tension that’s simultaneously meditative and menacing.

The interstitial tracks here—Fred S, Krohn/Schneider, Squared Off, and the title track—lend texture, depth, and nuance to a release that adds to up to much more than the sum of its parts.

Standards & Practices is proud to present ‘Imitable Behaviors’, the debut EP from label cofounder and frequent collaborator Ken Meier @ken-meier. All four tracks here have been kicking around in various iterations but were finally completed earlier this year. Refining and developing the sound he’s cultivated on remixes for Israel Vines and Jake Reif, as well as material under the name Obelus for Karl O’Connor’s Downwards imprint as well as Mysteries of the Deep, this is the first material released on our Double Standards sub-label since 2018’s acclaimed 12” from Device Control, ‘The Spirit Module’.

‘No Confidence’ kicks off the proceedings in fine style—it’s a sleek, aerodynamic modern electro cut with plenty of tension and rhythmic drive. ‘Fact Pattern’ follows, a favorite of ours—sparse and jittery, all nervous energy with razor-sharp drum programming and jagged, mottled sonic textures. The spacious, dubby ‘Omnipresence’ utilizes a half-time melodic feel to great effect, and the crunchy ‘End Matter’ closes the EP on a memorably quirky and idiosyncratic note, a stripped-down DJ tool that, like the other tracks here, manages to be both functional and substantial at the same time.

Friend of the label Karl O’Connor aka Regis had this to say about the release: “This is everything I love about music, but unfortunately it’s all in the wrong order.” We couldn’t agree more, Karl.

From Karl @karlpmeier: This is the complete version of the mix that I did for the Hugo Ball @hugoball312 event/mix series back in 2015. (It returns Kraftwerk to the beginning of the set, as initially it had to be edited out for copyright reasons.) The intention was to create something that traversed all kinds of genres and styles — much in the same way the residents did so expertly at Hugo Ball. You’ll find everything in here from Wire to Big Audio Dynamite to the Pet Shop Boys, and so on. It maybe suffers from being slightly over-ambitious but I had a lot of fun making it, and I think it holds up. Hope you enjoy. xx

Standards & Practices is thrilled to announce an exciting new release from veteran producer and label owner Jonathan Krohn, otherwise known as Stave, and Bristol-based producer Tavis Hitchcock, who writes and releases music under the name Karkossyn. Karkossyn's superb debut EP ("Troubled Youth") for the like-minded and consistently excellent UVB-76 imprint led to a conversation about a possible collaboration, which has resulted in "New Values" - a 12-track split cassette which highlights and showcases both artists approaches to blackened, scorched-earth electronics.

Stave's contribution is a solid summation of his craft and acts as a potent reminder of his range and abilities as a producer: from the cacophonous, arrhythmic "62523" to the simmering, coiled tension of "Relearn / Forget", there's ample evidence here of an artist operating at the height of his powers; the expansive, surprisingly moving "Rolyy" ends the first half on a powerfully lyrical note.

On the flip side, Karkossyn begins with the bleak atmospherics of "Hidden Heart", which soon gives way to "Break The Fall", a heavy dose of Scorn-esque breakbeat-driven bass weight. "For The Floor" ratchets up the tension to an almost unbearable degree, and the droning, cinematic ambience of "Memento" and the dense, pulverizing "Ruins" finishes the split EP in an elegantly brutal fashion.

Fear of Music (http://fearofmusic.org) was in many ways a precursor to Standards & Practices @stanprac — we threw sporadic events and shared mixes online, made by likeminded midwest techno fans during the 'dark years' (the aughts, when minimal ruined everything). This was the first release in our mix series and, as of today, it's exactly 15 years old. To us, it still sounds ahead of its time.

From @karlpmeier — 'It's hard to believe this mix is 15 years old. Pretty soon it'll be asking for the keys to the car and the ability to stay out past 10pm. Funny story - one night Jeff and I were at Smart Bar (I think; "the mind plays tricks" as Alan Partridge famously said) and Jeff had been telling me about this artist named 2562 who had released his first LP, "Aerial", the year prior. Jeff had been listening to it non-stop and told me that I absolutely had to investigate. Well, long story short - we were approached by friends that night to open for him at Lava Lounge. We could hardly believe it - it was such a odd coincidence. Now, at the time, I knew very little about "dubstep", ultimately - that was more Jeff's area of expertise. But I was intrigued, and it was a fairly exciting time for electronic music, as there was a lot of genre "cross pollination" going on. All the cheap rave revivalism hadn't started to happen just yet, and there was seemingly a lot of room to explore combining techno and other genres with this new form of music. Jeff and I had expressed some interest in what we could do DJing with Ableton, and this inaugural outing is fairly representative of what we were listening to at the time - and also reflects other influences that we thought might fit in and work well. Really, we were just drunk on the possibilities of what we could do - and ultimately I thought it all worked out quite well. The night ended up being probably one of the most successful gigs I'd been a part of in ages. The crowd was up for it, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Anyway, that's enough nostalgia - hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening.'

Standards & Practices is proud to present "Stave Interpretations” — remixes of original material by Stave @stavesoundsystem, featuring Israel Vines @israel-vines, Patrick Russell @ptrckrssll, Ken Meier @ken-meier, Karkossyn @karkossyn, and YŌKA @yokatechno.

The first interpretation comes courtesy of Patrick Russell — who, in addition to being a visionary DJ, has proven himself to be a terrific remixer and producer in his own right — contributes a version of "Drum Four" that is arguably one of his best to date: a sinuous, grimy excursion into unknown waters brimming with atmosphere and menace.

Following Russell, Krohn himself brings us a disintegrated, alternative take on "Drum Three."

Karkossyn, aka Bristol native Tavis Hitchcock, is easily one of the most thrilling discoveries we've made as of late. His split EP with Stave ("New Values" on S&P) is only his second release to date, and both devastating interpretations of “Relearn/Forget” on display here, two juddering, broken beat behemoths, hint at even greater things to come.

Newcomers YŌKA contribute a suitably monstrous, industrial-tinged version of "Drum Two."

Veteran DJ and producer Israel Vines, who recently released a pair of brilliant EPs on Tresor — including a superb collaboration with Camille Altay as CAIV — uses a fast-paced, halftime approach to rethink “005", full of energy and an almost unbearable, nerve-jangling tension.

And finally, S&P co-founder Ken Meier, who recently completed a triumphant solo venture on our sublabel Double Standards ("Imitable Behaviors”), delivers an 85 bpm version of “002" that turns the original on its ear — all terse, clipped sonics, stripped to the bone with lush pads that add cinematic sweep and grandeur.

Standards & Practices is proud to present the new full-length collaborative release from Stave & Karim Maas, "Into Eternity". Comprised of material that emerged from a particularly fruitful session following their first collaborative effort ("Godless", on the Bristol-based imprint UVB-76), their second LP picks up where that release left off with eight tracks of sleek and brutal bass & breaks music, demonstrating the same kind of disciplined rigor, focus, and attention to detail that characterized their first collaboration together.

From the terse, sinuous opener "Invaders Will Die (The Falling Tsar)"—which moves and prowls like a snake stalking its prey, to the low-slung and corrosive "Liar" and "For A Shaking Mind" (both of which brings to mind some of Mick Harris's work as Scorn), the entire set has a sustained atmosphere of existential dread and brooding menace that is difficult to shake.

Special thanks to Abby Echiverri and Clay Wilson for making this happen as well as to the LCD crew, who were extremely friendly, helpful  and accommodating. This was a nice opportunity to play some things (new & old) that I don't get the chance to play out often—a mixture of edits, post-punk influences and slow-tempo weirdness as well as some acid house and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Back after an undeserved hiatus, Standards & Practices welcomes long-time friend and associate Jake Reif (Dark Entries, Rong Music, L.I.E.S.) with the third EP on our sub-label, Double Standards.

Jake's first record with us as Device Control ("The Spirit Module") garnered praise from all corners, finding favor with house and techno DJs alike—especially those looking to bridge the gap between styles.

This outing is comprised primarily of his excellent 2018 12” on Mystic Bill's Children Of The Box imprint (vinyl only, not available digitally before) alongside three unreleased cuts from the same sessions.

We can't decide which are our favorites: from the machine-press groove of "A.T.L.H." to the cosmic, reduced fusion of “Spayc” and of course the vibrating robo-funk of title track “Silhouettes”, all will make a mark in a multitude of club contexts.

Jake’s work mines a unique seam, blending an iconoclastic synthesis of influences from Belgian New Beat, early Wax Trax! industrial dance, as well as grimy Cajmere-esque drum workouts and Network-era bleep techno. To our ears, the results feel fresh and modern, avoiding trendy revivalism or bland nostalgia.

Battle Standards represents the first output from Talker (Jonathan Krohn and Karl Meier) since 2014’s eponymous full-length on Karl O’Connor’s pioneering Downwards imprint. While that release demonstrated the pair’s range and ability to craft compelling music not simply for DJ use, this inaugural effort on their new Standards & Practices label is aimed squarely at the dancefloor, and designed for maximum visceral impact. Drawing on material created for their all-new live show, each track is a neat summation of the Talker aesthetic: elegant and brutal. Lead cut 'Battle Standard' goes right for the jugular, incorporating howling blasts of noise layered with dense, syncopated drums—recalling the work of Birmingham techno icons Regis and Surgeon. 

On the flip, '(Gold) Standard', a remix that appeared only on a limited edition CD compilation, is one of Talker’s most memorable compositions yet, with its haunting Aphex Twin-esque refrain and tough, mechanistic percussion. 'Snub Nose' closes the record with a reduced, pared-back sound, unlike anything the duo has done before. Featuring a distinct electro-EBM influence, the staccato, teeth-rattling rhythms might be the EP’s most effective DJ tool.

Following the blistering inaugural release from Talker comes the second release on the Standards & Practices imprint from label co-founder Jonathan “Stave” Krohn, who returns with 5 tracks of dark, visceral electronic music for the discerning listener. “Black Hills” and “TASC US” kick off the proceedings in fine style — pummeling drums underpinning harsh blasts of noise and bleak, greyscale atmospherics, while “In/Human” and “B5” on the flip take a different approach — 2 tracks not aimed at the dancefloor, but both retaining that cold, claustrophobic feel that characterizes much of Stave’s work. The brooding and sinister “Stave 17” closes the EP, moving into exciting new territory with an intensely cinematic sound.

Standards & Practices returns after an extended hiatus with its first release for 2020 and the label's first-ever compilation. Showcasing six exclusive tracks from a variety of musically like-minded allies both new and established, "Out Of Practice Vol. 1" finds some of the most talented artists currently working in electronic music refining their sound and pushing their craft in exciting new directions.

Stave and Grebenstein's "Rack 4", their first collaboration since 2018's acclaimed "Live From Frankfurter Strasse", kicks off the proceedings with a view into a bleak, dystopian sonic landscape, while Italian producer VSK, known for his excellent EPs on Mord and 47 (among others) delivers "Pendulum", one of his best tracks to date - a visceral, unrelenting, broken-beat behemoth. Closing side A is Chicago native Todd Mattei 's contribution, "Lake Charles", a beautifully textured Frippian soundscape.

Kristian Jabs, better known to most as Pessimist, opens side B with "Rut", a sleek, stripped-down, techno track that positively drips with moody atmospherics and tension. Overlook and Karim Maas's contribution, the dense and claustrophobic "Chalk", is an ultra-heavy breaks track with hoovers and enough sub-bass to shatter blocks of granite. "7th Recording 29", an ambient piece which represents Jonathan Krohn's first recorded collaboration with long-time friend and associate Benjamin Mjolsness since their work together in the group Male - closes the compilation.
