The End, by The Doors,explores profound themes of the human psyche, going beyond a simple farewell. The direct reference to the Oedipus complex in the lines "Father? / Yes, son / I want to kill you / Mother, I want to–" reveals internal conflicts and family taboos, demonstrating how the song addresses universal issues of rupture, symbolic death, and rebirth. Although Morrison was initially inspired by the end of his relationship with Mary Werbelow, he expanded the lyrics to address broader existential experiences.
The hypnotic atmosphere created by Robby Krieger's guitar, which imitates Indian instruments, reinforces the sense of travel and transcendence. Lines like "Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain" and "All the children are insane" suggest a civilization on the brink of collapse, which connects to the use of music in the film "Apocalypse Now" to illustrate the chaos of war.
