Kasper Marott techno mix for Mala Junta NTS show (7/8-23)

Co-founder of Norway’s future-facing Ute crew, Ekkel (Teo Bachs) has a front-row seat in the cockpit on their psychedelic flavoured quest. From their woodland beginnings they’ve staked a claim to freedom through music and community, and expanded to include brick and mortar club nights and a self-titled label for the release of their magnetic and mysterious techno sounds. Forest-bath electronics that take stock of Scandinavia’s ambient tradition and cross-pollinate it with a measure of acid, trance and midnight sun. Teo’s own steadily rising number of productions (side project H25 included) has fleshed out Ute’s vision with a personal twist, and there’s another three scheduled for the fall. The past few years too have seen him hard at work exploring the possibilities of sound in a lonely cabin as part of Solar Alliance, collaborating with S.O.N.S on Korean label Junction Forest and producing many more unreleased tracks, some of which you’ll hear here first for a very special number. It’s a wormhole trip that marches headlong from the shadows, shimmering and physical beats that heave and swell, tribal breaks that flit from track to track and build a cathartic mood that harks back to Ute’s woodland roots. Filip Storsveen returns to the Bassiani Podcast following a first stint as half of Omformer, this time as solo act Oprofessionell. The Oslo-based co-founder of rave entente Uteklubb (and constituent imprint UTE.REC) draws a wealth of inspiration from the aesthetic of 90s trance, a fully packaged set of sounds, images and for many of a generation, memories, that enshrine a moment in electronic music with particular resonance today. Cyclical revivals are just that, but there’s something especially felt in the speed-saturated sound that’s taken over not only his native Norway, but neighbouring nordic lands, an acknowledgement of its homegrown forest-rave culture, something parallel to the speed at which the world seems to be tipping into exponential overdrive. Storsveen and collaborators Mikkel Rev and Alpha Tracks are flying that flag high above the parapet. And as a means of escape, it delivers large on warm and fuzzy nostalgia, a method by which the creative spirits of the past are reborn today just when we need them most. From releases on his co-run label to a string of contagious live sets, Oprofessionell’s ambit is widening and the ethos of nordic rave gains ever more traction. Bassiani Podcast 253 is a wink to the past and a plan for the future, a set recorded live at Bassiani, mercurial rhythms that live and breathe the spirit of Oslo and Storsveen’s neo-trance renaissance.

The sound needs to have all the layers and depth, then it acts like glue. People need to be present so that whenever you lock eyes with someone, you feel grounded. The bodies have got to be responding to music in a way natural for them, and then the bodily fluids start seeping into the air. But all of this can only happen when the music is delivered honestly. With love, intention, opinion opinion, and with a real dedication to sharing and connecting. I felt that when Madeleine and Daniel were playing on Ankali’s 8th Anniversary. The room smelled like the perfect set – and with that, you can’t go wrong. It fuels you to give even more.”

Next up in our mix series is our good friend Kasper Marott - a DJ, producer, promoter and label head based in Copenhagen. Kasper is one of the heads behind the record label and event series Axces, as well as the beloved Copenhagen party series Haldisk and Essence, and the iconic Kune Festival. Since his debut in 2014, Kasper has shown his skill to produce ecstatic yet reflective tracks with a clear voice over and over. With his highly refined taste across genres he has also proven to be a unique talent as a DJ – his ear for the percussive elements of music is of a rare kind and his DJ sets sliding easily between moods, tempos and styles.

In this mix, Kasper taps into his techno-infused realms with a 3+ hour journey of uplifting euphoria at its finest. Rolling psychedelia meets ecstatic dubby delights, delivered with the unmistakable touch only Kasper can bring. He expertly masters taking the listeners through highs and lows seamlessly, in a fluid dance between tension and release, as a sonic exploration that balances chaos and control, bliss and introspection.

"It was one of those nights. The hot, heavy and thick air was sticking to my skin. The daylight wouldn’t fade that day, and the whole city was baked. The scorched asphalt stayed warm long into the night. I didn’t want to go anywhere. A tired Friday. I made myself a kombucha with vodka and cola. The ice melted immediately. I grabbed my hip bag and stepped into the dark.

I felt a bit nauseous the moment I hit the street. Excited, I don’t even know why. The night soaked into my t-shirt; I had it under my nails. I let the night pull me willingly, I let go of the reins.

Mu’taism started his set and it was like sliding into old slippers that just wouldn’t stop moving. The vibrating, marsh-like humidity was tangible throughout the whole club. I slowly plunged in so I could keep hearing those voices coming from a strange dimension inside my belly. A few last breaths before the black water surface closes over my head, and I dissolve."
