There are many messages and meanings behind Self - Preservation. I had a great upbringing but went through so much trauma at such a young age that it took a LOT of soul searching to grow and become strong again, the strongest form of self I can be. I am still growing, true, but there is always room for improvement and growth but it took a lot of pain to get there. From my childhood and on, I was never accepted. Anywhere. I was always too different or too weird. I was always the black sheep. I was so severely bullied in school that my family and I had to move states from Georgia to NY to try and start being around people that accepted me for who I was. I then went headfirst into my first relationship ever, lasting 6 years to another one lasting 2 years, they were both severely abusive in far different ways. In the second one, I almost lost my life and was brutally abused. I am still shocked to be here. I consider myself on borrowed time. In the midst of all of this chaos, as if it wasn’t enough, I lost my biggest fan, best friend and first true love, my daddy. All of the pain at once was overwhelming me and too much to deal with only being in my 20s. I admit, I became bitter, dark and numb. My escape? Music music music and music. I ran away every time it got hard to deal with. I ran away with my co-writer Cvrt Martin in Las Vegas, California or Atlanta (where my dad is buried) and wrote and recorded my heart out and had many special guests come in and write with us.it was a way to release all my pain, retribution and revenge. A safe place to explain how I feel about life, my life and what has become of it and what is acceptable in the world we live in now. This album is a safe place where I could help empower women, like myself, and let them know they’re not alone. Inspire those to stick up for themselves. It is up to you to sink or swim when faced with difficult situations and I’m proud of myself for picking myself over succumbing to the pain. 

I then started dealing with judgment and being picked on from every single direction - labels, managers, friends, fans and people in the industry. I couldn’t do or be enough for anyone. Let’s face it, I’m not pizza or tequila. So I decided, f*#k it. I’m gonna do me, be me and live the life I want to live and write the music I wanna write, and since then I have grown and become the woman I wanna be. I tried to be enough for the wrong people and then I decided to become enough for me. Low and behold, I fell in love, true deep love and have been treated properly and taken care of in every way since. So this album is dedicated to those that are giving up on themselves. Don’t EVER do it. I love you. You need to love you.

They all experienced the same crappy relationship stuff no one likes. So Rachel, Ookay & Curtis all agreed they weren’t interested in anyone or looking for love and figured they’d never be in that place again. ‘Lost In The Dark’ is an anthem for those people that love their freedom and independence and don’t want to let people down by giving them the wrong idea.
