World Compassion

A Ricercar was a polyphonic instrumental form of the 
16th and 17th centuries closely resembling the vocal 
motet in structure and style. The Ricercar (like the 
Neanderthal) proved to be an evolutionary dead end, 
eventually overtaken by the (Cro Magnon?).The work 
is based on the motive, A D F Eb, stated at the onset by 
the trumpet. The slow, polyphonic first section leads to 
a second part, doubling the tempo. The piece concludes 
with a short reprise of the opening.
This work was written for and premiered by the University 
of Wisconsin Brass Quintet, coached by John Barrows.
