Following a debut Berghain performance and Rinse FM Culture vs Reality residency, Overthinker Mob founder Bloomfeld prepares the genesis of his digital art renaissance. Meeting at the intersection of ethno-futuristic braindance and hedonistic club heat is LT-BLOOM-01, the artist's debut on Lobster Theremin and a release that marks new sonic territory for the important UK label.

As the founder of the Overthinker Mob research label, the Berlin based artist has “rejected conventional formats for releasing music” (FACT Mag) by “putting out unfinished or overthought music from artists anonymously” (Resident Advisor), compiling “a diverse range of anti-ego club tunes and sombre atmospheres'' (Electronic Beats). While allowing for the heads to over-intellectualise, Bloomfeld’s output often exposes what comes out of the speakers as just wiggly hair. After all, existence is a cosmic joke.

“My debut release is an introspective work documenting some of the characters I slipped into since my teenage years,” he says. “It’s named LARP OS - LARP being short for live-action role play - because role-playing is how I interact with my environment. And how everyone else does.”

“For my part, I am blessed with the ability to distinguish and compartmentalise the characters I adopt to navigate my circumstances, and I have a strong bond with all of them.”

Glueing together the personas that live inside the creator’s skull, LARP OS is a deconstructed trip through trap-laden hi-hats, screw-face grime, and IDM-electronica that walks the tightrope between functional and malfunctioning. ‘Beep U’ kicks things off with a melting cut of 140bpm fuck-step; weightless, slow-mo atmospherics give off a vintage music-box vibe that when blended with pitched vocal samples is reminiscent of the golden-years of Plata, Mssngno, and those artists associated with emo, R&B-laden electronica.

‘Osmosis’ maintains the grimey aesthetic and sky-rockets it into the time-ahead; a future-facing cut of vibrant melodies and distorted basslines that do not sound unlike the excellent, mind-bending productions of Strict Face. With gun-shot samples a-plenty, it’s as tropical as it is dark.

That darkness is followed on ‘Solid’; a wub-driven cut of underground bass-weight that sounds like it was taken straight out of a Mumdance set. Squelching slime, stabbing lasers and scattered breaks make for a gritty and raw experience, before that ‘Everyday I’m Hustlin’ energy comes through on ‘Yeah, Cool’; Memphis-trap elements and old school arcadia rolling around the broken soundscape.

Much like Loraine James’ excellent Reflection, the A-side comes to a close with zero-gravity basslines and Sonic The Hedgehog-like samples that sound like an old gaming machine is being sucked through a black-hole, before the B-side begins and the future-dancehall riddims of ‘Need More Sky’ play out.

‘Simulation’ and ‘Voodoo Bref’ capture the delicate essence of chaos, beauty and nuance - elements essential to each character that we shapeshift into in our short time on this rolling planet.

‘Where Were U Rly Born’ is an emotional piece of wordless social commentary subtitled by glitching kicks, emo-atmospherics and protest, defiant-like energy, while ‘Mondainai’ hears the cries of one-more-tune before ending on a devastating cut of distorted, hip-hop fused dub.

As one of the three co-founders of Washington D.C. production and DJ trio Black Rave Culture, James Bangura is no stranger to situating electronic music within its most purposeful and potent contexts. With this new duo of tracks, however, Bangura taps into a deep, personal internality, metabolising visceral experiences and personal transitions into unexplored phases of his musical life.

The bass-forward “Harrar” is a complex organism which operates on two planes: a sweat-drenched 150pm symphony of synth pulses, fidgety percussion, shimmies and distorted vocals, that falls into lockstep with a meditative, dubby bass tone that calmly swells and recedes. Emerging out of Bangura’s high intensity hardware jam sessions with friends and collaborators, both the depth and energetic fizz of “Harrar”’ are signified by its name, borrowed from Harrar Coffee & Roastery--a beloved Ethiopian coffee house and community meeting place in Washington D.C. that radiates warmth and familiarity.

“Witness Dub” occupies less of the senses, exploring a state of liminality through a contemplative deep house signature. Having emerged from an extended period of active duty in the military, Bangura had to navigate civilian life for the first time, causing him to process multiple culture shocks that stretched across culture, language, communication and identity. “Witness Dub” finds Bangura at this crossroad, juxtaposing the steady propulsion of kicks and drums with pensive minor key chords, as he begins to explore the other side of the self, letting the energy guide the music.

Intercept welcomes Destrata with his debut EP for the label: Squib. Over three tracks, the Vancouver based artist shows you his take on UK influenced bass and techno.

The title track 'Squib' is Eli's first foray in 4x4 music and showcases his talent for energetic moves whilst still retaining a taste for detail. With a lead built out of a twisted vocal sample and a bass that's as grooving as it is chest pumping, it perfectly sets the tone for the EP.

'U4ia' is next up and is built around the idea to run all percussive hits through different colorful delays and reverbs. Gritty textured bass stabs act as a counterpoint to the heavy kick pattern. Combined with the ever shifting hi hats the track feels oddly tribal without stepping
into clichés.

'What Dreams Are Made Of' ends this banging EP, but delivers something different. Destrata forms a bridge between the current wave of mutant dancehall and higher tempo Latin American inspired club tracks. It showcases his feeling for off kilter rhythms and bass even more.

ERAM recorded a fast mix with only female juke, jungle, footwork and club productions, a blast of broken beats that lead to a 4x4 ghetto feel all infused in the good old rave spirit. Bringing her own tracks together with many of her friends and references producers.

This mix is a proof of female's heavy weight in production.

ERAM is the project of the multidisciplinary Brazilian artist Marianna Viscaíno, co-founder of ZONAexp and currently a member at Tijolo records label. She has played at many parties on the Brazilian underground rave scene and is a national reference on the leftfield electronic music. Her productions have been played all around the world, resulting on releases with labels from Germany, UK, US and their first UK/European tour in May of this year, starting at the Bang Face festival in London. Her sets consist of a truly unique blend of urban electronic music of UK as well as US heritage and Brazilian national funk and rap, a result of a strong personality, mixing different styles with versatility, pervaded by accelerated BPMs.

Star Eyes is synonymous with raw underground bass music. A founding member of the world-renowned Trouble & Bass crew, currently a part of Warp Mode, this bat girl causes mayhem with DJ sets and tracks that swiftly connect the dots between regional American bass sounds and the hardcore continuum. Though her style moves across breakbeat, grime, bassline, electro and beyond, her aesthetic is continually inspired by jungle, old-skool hardcore, and the warehouse parties in which she was raised. 

Star Eyes is originally from Los Angeles, where she began DJing at age 15 – her name soon became synonymous with California jungle scene, and she was a longtime resident at the pioneering female-led drum 'n' bass night Eklectic in San Francisco. Eventually she founded America's first UK garage duo Syrup Girls (with DJ Siren) and moved to NYC, where she became a part of the Trouble & Bass crew & record label, who were the first to bring Skream & Benga, Night Slugs, Rusko, Elijah & Skilliam, Flava D and more to NYC; in 2009, she began releasing her first original productions and remixes. 

Since 2015, she has run her own digital label and party series called Chaos Clan – now residing back in L.A., she is currently a part of renegade rave crew Warp Mode (with Bianca Oblivion & AK Sports) as well as holding down a monthly radio show on Dublab. Over the course of her career, she has played at Outlook Festival, Sonár Festival, Fabric, EDC, Burning Man, Stealth, Bossa Nova, Elsewhere and beyond, and headlined parties in Cape Town, Singapore, Paris, and Krakow, to name a few. She has been written about in the New Yorker, the NY Times, Resident Advisor, DJ Mag, Mixmag, XLR8R, Urb, and the list goes on. 

Star Eyes is also an alumni of Red Bull Music Academy, a former radio host on RBMA/Red Bull Radio and a noted music journalist, with bylines in Pitchfork, NPR, the Dallas Morning News, and beyond. She currently hosts a monthly show on Dublab.com and a podcast called Rave to the Grave. With world-class skills, irreverent attitude, and longtime devotion to the culture of electronic music and the temple of low-end frequencies, Star Eyes has definitely earned the title "Queen of Heavy Bass.”
