In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars”, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet recounts two intimately entwined and ultimately tragic episodes—events that began in joy and hope but were transformed into loss through the severing of the poet’s bond with his beloved. At the heart of the poem are his long-standing, private efforts to commission a singular gift: a pendant crafted with the rare gemstone ammolite, chosen to mark her long-anticipated Arangetram, the debut solo performance of a Bharatanatyam dancer. The pendant’s design was carefully conceived, not only in its aesthetic form but in its emotional and symbolic resonance. Through color, shape, and mineral origin, it was meant to crystallize a history of shared affection, aspiration, and reverence for her art.

Yet, with the collapse of their relationship before the performance occurred, the pendant became more than an unoffered gift: it became a relic, haunted by memories of love and burdened by the weight of unrealized ritual. The grief is compounded by an even deeper wound as the poet was never given the chance to witness her Arangetram. In fact, even now, more than fifteen years later, he does not know if it ever took place. The silence that followed their estrangement has left him suspended in uncertainty—a condition that reflects the broader ache running through “Tome of Stars”: the agony of devotion severed from knowledge.

This absence is particularly sharp because, when he first met her, she had stepped away from dance, despite its centrality to her identity. He recognized in her a deep longing to return, and repeatedly encouraged her to take it up again, even amid the demands of a rigorous professional path. She did. She dances still. And yet the moment that was to be a culmination of his faith in the beloved, her Arangetram, remains hidden from him. His Indian visa, long expired, rests in his old passport like a cruel artifact, whispering each night of what might have been: the pendant placed on her chest, the stage beneath her feet, and the fulfillment of a dream never shared.

In  “Diamonds & Dust”, the poet portrays a process of emotional and spiritual stripping that culminates in a personal form of “sporulation,” a metaphorical distillation of the self down to its most resilient core: his enduring affection for the beloved. The poem dramatizes the speaker’s acceptance that this love, along with the accompanying need, is inescapable, persisting regardless of suffering, rejection, or futility. The imagery evokes a desert trial marked by searing isolation, the surrender of all sustaining illusions such as faith, reason, and hope, and the exposure of a soul rendered completely bare. What remains, if anything, resembles a spore: small, sealed, dormant—yet formed around the indestructible nucleus of that love.

“Visions“ is a sonnet set in the realm of sustained illusion and interior devotion. It continues the thread begun in “Oasis“, where the poet constructs an internal world in which his beloved’s presence survives through active imagination. The poem is shaped around ritual repetition: waking and sleeping, memory and dream, day and night. This daily cycle becomes a metaphysical practice of sustaining her presence, in mind if not in body. The poem also ventures into the speculative, a metaphysical realm where love might exist outside the confines of reason and conventional time, a conceptualization driven by the poet's desperate need to experience some kind of reality with the beloved.

The third section of “Tome of Stars“ is “Sporogenesis”, a haphazard chronicle of the years 2011–2020. It marks a shift from the cataclysm of “Senescence" into a period of withdrawal and emotional hibernation, its eleven sonnets seeking to reflect the padam of the collection’s bharatanatyam-inspired structure.

This sonnet explores the ache of one-sided communication and the psychological erosion wrought by silence. The speaker, having reached out repeatedly and vulnerably to his beloved through a previously shared, now one-sided email channel, finds himself locked in a ritual of unanswered expression. The sonnet situates this heartbreak in a nearly mythic register, blending sacred imagery with motifs of madness, exile, and artistic invocation. What begins as a recollection of love’s spark turns quickly to the torment of being unheard, culminating in the speaker’s desperate attempts to reach the beloved through poetry, prayer, song, and art, even as his words fall into a void.

“Anemochory”, from the botanical term for wind-borne seed dispersal, forms the fourth Item of “Tome of Stars” and serves as a metaphor for the poet’s most desolate phase. It consists of fifteen sonnets of emotional scattering, spiritual disorientation, and theological anguish.

This sonnet confronts the painful complexity of memory, love, and identity, reaching an endpoint of a layered emotional realism. It recognizes that what we idealize (love, the beloved, even our own motives), inevitably coexist with what is base, broken, or hidden. It is a poem of synthesis: not despair alone, not hope alone, but a fusion of both. The speaker does not try to escape the contradictions but instead frames them as intrinsic to the human condition, a reality “too dark for light, too precious to unclasp”. While earlier poems may have separated the divine from the profane, the beautiful from the ugly, here they are braided together, offering a vision that is neither redemptive nor damning, but simply undeniable.

Agleam within the ruins of my mind,
A single shard shines bright amongst the waste:
A sublime rose once shattered in my crimes,
Revealed as glow no gloom could ever fade.

For love is godly—bright and black the same,
A mixture rough of mortal mud divine.
Where sorrow mangles joy, yet gestates flame,
Jailed soulmates thrust within the genes’ design.

We build from what we break towards a light,
Or so we dream in fever through our night.
