i was listening through tracks on my old account, and forgot how much i enjoy this arrangement of Big Blue from F-Zero i did with my brother.

Your party enters the village. It is a perpetual dusk. A dreaminess floats around you. Children run by and try to scare each other. There is a costumed dance somewhere in the distance. It is out of earshot still, but you can taste it in the frozen twilit air. The celebration is a bittery-sweet thing. You smile, assuring your companions they are safe, but something feels rotten. There is something in secret hiding from you here - or perhaps waiting.

This was a tough go. Lots I'd change, lots of emotions, but it's time to just let it go free to the wilds. For the gametabs.com Zelda tribute album. Wrote some new melodies and countermelodies to give it some bulk.

Started this a few weeks ago and didn't finish. Came back to it today only to discover my midi controller was acting up and un-useable. So that's delightful. I just finished a few spots and called it.

Having not written or recorded in a few months, I had to drag this out of myself. It was a violent process. But not too violent. 

The Strange-ness of Spring

The sand is damp and your feet sink in a little more than you are comfortable. The day holds its breath. The air is salty to the taste. There is a captain here that will take you across the ocean...but you keep wondering - how can a ghost pilot a boat?

Restless Ghosts by the Sea (Town Theme)

Having thieved a small airship from the Great City with dramatic flair, the party of adventurers has had long days of reflection, speculation and introspection. The fires seem to have died out mostly across the far continent, leaving the sky a lost grey. It is rare anyone speaks. The girls pretend to do their hair, or brush their jackets down of dirt and stains - feigning interest in vanity. The men behave confidently, although it is certain within each of them there is little strength left. They want to believe they have a say in where they are going, and to turn in any other direction, but the navigational pulleys and gears were all damaged in their escape. Their fortune that the ship's heading is sincere and will lead them where they need to go, is also the shadow that hangs over each of them. No one wishes this direction. Not one of them wishes for their destination. There is a bleak inevitability that hangs on each of them like a ghost. Like a slow giant is dragging the ship through the sky - as if by chains - through some emotional and fear-laden murk.
There are still days at least before they arrive, but for one moment, the party who has until now remained un-whole for any single moment, finds themselves all together on the front of the ship. The air is surprisingly warm and still here. The heat from the far-flung-fires singes the fog and clouds as they slip around the bow like cream. Until now they've felt, each one, isolated from the others. Separated from each other by their collective fears of what's ahead. Unable to communicate, worried to show weakness, or to promote cowardice when they have no choices left. What good is fear, after all? But now, all together in the embered vastness, they find each other. They find their strength. Not in some grand courageous flourish, but in the subtle breaths and drifts of wind moving hairs and clothes out of place. Where the weight of the smoldering world ends in the horizon - for just this moment - the unknown beyond is hope. The crippled ship lurches forward, bits falling off at odd intervals - a fumbling mess of parts, carrying the weight of it's passengers, and the passengers carrying the weight of the future.

To an Unfamiliar Future

Cover of Uematsu's Balamb Garden track from Final Fantasy 8 for the GameTabs.net FF8 cover album. Inspiration was nowhere to be found, so I had to just gut it out. 

Balamb GARDEN ~SeeDs of the Future~

Her hair began to swirl wildly. What was once a fresh and rejuvenating breeze, was now as a cavity, souring the sweetness she took for granted. The wind cawed and snarled, causing her body to feel heavy and cumbersome. She heard a voice rumbling like a hurricane hidden in the gales. This felt different. This felt dangerous. 

(Track for Gametabs.net's tune contest. Forced this out in an afternoon. Pretty substantially rugged, as far as music goes.)

A Gusty Encounter (Wind Boss Theme)

The smell of the swamp made her nostrils sweat. Was it days yet, or only hours? The air had stopped in here. A duskiness hung low and clung to the moisture that surrounded her boots. Something was changing, though. Like two pressure systems pressing against each other. Maybe she was close, after all?

Swamp's End (Upon Exit, Turn Any Way But Backwards)

The flavor of grilled fish and noodles mixes in his stomach. This will be his last food for some time, he considers. He reaches for his drink. The outside is slippery with condensation. Steam spills upwards from the back, where they are cooking, of course. Moisture collects on the fluorescent lights. He can't taste his drink over the fish, but this is not a problem. The fish was delicious.
