Jex Opolis - Please Be Bad To Me

We've had our eyes & ears on Malmö's Fasaan Recordings since they released Medicine's organ-driven Afro-funk freakout "Enjebeye" back in 2013. The label's eighth offering comes from Bufiman (AKA Jan Schulte) in the form of the Ältere Sachen 12".

The songs on Ältere Sachen were originally made six or seven years ago and picked up on by the Fasaan crew when they played with Schulte in Düsseldorf,  where "Die Mumie" remained spinning round their heads for days after. The track fits perfectly into the Fasaan aesthetic, a pulsating fizzed-out lead accompanied by a dangerous groove to boot, topped off with a hint of deviancy.

These almost lost recordings will get to shine through Fasaan Recordings in mid June.

The first split ep on Optimo Trax! 

When The Golden Filter sent us 6 tracks to choose from for an EP release on Optimo Music, we were struggling to choose just 4 as we loved them all so much, so we decided to take all of them and put two that we felt were perhaps more DJ friendly out on Optimo Trax. "Heavy" (it is!) and "Outimacy" are both tried and tested in the clubs; two wild electronic signals with advanced synthetic sound design and monumental production. Boom!

We turned to Morgan Hammer to take on the other side (both sides are A sides). After being blown away by hearing her DJ and finding out that most of the tracks we wanted to know the identities of were her own work, we chose two tracks that are mighty in their own right while also complementing the tracks by The Golden Filter. "Arrogant Bastard" gets asked about every time it is played out. A modern update of the Belgian electrobeat* sound (*electrobeat being a better term than the not so great EBM) with Morgan's wildly deadpan vocals. It's already a hit. The EP is rounded off with her Hammer horror (sorry!) "Killer Nighter". An all-year-round delight but surely destined to be a future Halloween standard.

Having released a stormer of an EP on Mr. Janson's Running Back earlier this year and delivering an infectious guest mix for Tim Sweeney's Beats in Space, Jex Opolis is currently prepping the next release on his own Good Timin' label. The Circle of Drums EP continues on the same dancefloor-centric route that Jex travelled down with his past few releases. "Circle of Drums" itself is a rolling "tribal-not-tribal" heater, featuring some of the most arousing digi-flute lines ever committed to tape. The whole release is a surefire way of keeping warm until the sun returns.

Jex Opolis Presents: "In The Nite", a versatile new EP featuring three cosmic cuts from the NYC-based musician and producer. The new music also features the help of Ian D. Knight, a St. Louis-based performance artist. After a chance meeting at a Knight performance in Chelsea last winter, the pair decamped to Jex’s NY-based rooftop greenhouse/studio for a two-week session of music and vaping. With Knight on-hand mostly for spiritual guidance and janitorial duties, the tracks flowed like organic wine and the wine flowed like really smooth music. Knight features most prominently on the Compass Point-tinged “Look At My Car!,” a Paean to the joys of both consumerism and rampant motorism. Meanwhile, Jex whips out the Strat for some Chic-inspired licks on the chugging “Guitar Sands" here premiered. And on the flip, “Rimini Nites” is a straight-ahead 120 BPM Italo stomper. One for the heads!

The Selectors project—an ongoing celebration of DJs with a particular devotion to their craft— successfully launched in 2016 with its first compilation (with Motor City Drum Ensemble at the helm) and a limited-capacity festival in Croatia. Dekmantel has already announced the festival’s return next summer, and now the compilation series is set to continue with a new edition curated by Young Marco.

Born Marco Sterk, he certainly doesn’t come from a standard DJ background. A former skate rat who grew up loving American post-hardcore and ’90s hip-hop as much as early Warp Records, he’s been affiliated over the years with Amsterdam institutions such as Rush Hour, Red Light Records and, of course, Dekmantel itself. Still, there’s no question that he’s always followed his own path, even during the years that playing his favorite records meant that he was occasionally clearing dancefloors.

Things are different these days, of course, as Sterk now regularly plays around the globe and has been widely hailed not just for his DJ talents, but also for his digging prowess and uncanny ability to pluck jams out of genres, eras and geographies that even veteran DJs will often ignore. In his mind, “the joy of getting home and finding out something is awesome is way more exciting than going through a big stack of curated records in some boring boutique record shop.” Still, Marco’s entry in the Selectors series isn’t some soulless collection of “Holy Grail” rarities. “Where’s the fun in that?” he explains. “Anybody with an internet connection can check what flavor-of-the-month records are in demand.”

Just like the first Selectors compilation, this is not a mix CD, but a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks that Sterk has personally chosen from his own vinyl archives. Moreover, Marco has put together a collection of tracks that represent not only how he plays music, but also how he makes music himself. The songs here are melodic, electronic and bound together by a refreshing sense of naiveté. Nothing sounds overly calculated; the tunes here span several decades and include dollar-bin records, avant-garde records, club records and yes, a few things that collector types have likely been looking to get their hands on. It's not meant to be a grand statement, as Marco would rather provide an honest snapshot of his musical tastes and share a few of his favorite tracks and artists in the process.

Jex is happy to share "First Stomp," a slamming slice of voodoo funk taken from his upcoming debut album "Ravines."

Ravines, a nine-track collection of music for all seasons, is a hopeful exploration of melody and atmosphere.

Jex Opolis on his new single: "The record is certainly my most personal to date, mainly because my vocals are all over it! I hope it’s a bit punchier and more immediate than my other releases, which sort of tiptoes the line between Steely Dan, Wally Badarou and like, Ben Liebrand or something.”
