Small ripples in the river lap audibly on the cold stone banks below, punctuated regularly with passing tourist cruises full of yelling teenagers, washing a mighty white bow-wave. The cities rumble is ever-present, and sirens feel maddeningly continuous. It smelt like piss.

This is unedited audio from a field recording we took in Banff, Canada, late on a cold night in April, 2018.  We were out to catch the Canadian National Freight train that came through the valley twice a day. There is no schedule for that train, so we had to choose a place to sit and wait with our recording gear at the ready. We chose some marshlands outside of the town of Banff. The marshlands were full of frogs, whose rhythmic calls are completely mesmerising. When the train comes throttling through from the mountains the field we were in turned from a still and intimate space to a wild whirlwind of clashing metal and vibrating air. It was amazing, and the audio still stands as the most stunning field recording we've taken yet, which is why we're putting it up unedited to share with you all. Hope you enjoy.
