Simon Malko

Lynn Garson, chair of the Lawyer Assistance Program of the State Bar of Georgia, talks about what it’s like to struggle during these uncertain COVID-19 times and shares some personal thoughts on taking care of ourselves. Having achieved 10 years of stability after being voluntarily hospitalized in 2008 and 2010 for depression and anxiety, Garson is keenly aware of the challenges to mental and emotional health presented by the combination of enforced isolation and increased family demands, as well as other fallout, from the COVID-19 pandemic. She urges anyone who is struggling to reach out for the help that can be found in community, in knowing that you are not alone. COVID-19: You're Not Alone

Hon. Kenneth “Ken” B. Hodges, a Court of Appeals of Georgia and former State Bar of Georgia president (2018-19), gives his view from the bench, regarding the “Shelter in Place” Order and what that means for Georgia’se courts, and his view from home, acting as an unofficial P.E. coach for his two elementary-aged children, who are now schooling from home. As one who has operated his own small law firm, he advocates the resources available on the State Bar of Georgia’s website (www.gabar.org), including small business resources and law practice management resources. He also reminds State Bar of Georgia members of the mental health resources available to them through the Lawyer Assistance Program and the LAP Hotline (1-800-327-9631). He highlights the #UseYour6 initiative, which provides six prepaid counseling sessions to all Bar members in Georgia that are completely confidential. COVID-19: Views from the Bench & the Backyard

Lynn Garson, chair of the Lawyer Assistance Program Committee, has a conversation with Kristy Weathers, the Professional Development Partner at Eversheds Sutherland since 2006. Eversheds Sutherland scored the highest of the 11 Atlanta firms ranked by associates in the national Am Law survey published in August 2020, and was ranked No. 12 of all 200 firms surveyed; additionally, it was ranked No. 1 in associate satisfaction locally for the second year in a row. Much of the commentary in the survey was on mental health, and Weathers discusses what Eversheds Sutherland is doing to earn that ranking. She also talks about setting boundaries in law practice, what she has done to stay steady and sane during the COVID-19 pandemic and the high importance of talking openly and often about wellness resources.
