Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. To be released on January 26th via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, it marks an exciting start to 2015.

Lead track ‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs that underpin dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops.

Second track ‘Until The World Ends’ proves once again both acts’ enduring versatility - kicking off with a bass-heavy dubstep tones complimented by vocal duties from State Of Mind’s fellow New Zealander PNC, before

switching to a manic, intelligently structured groove for the remainder.

‘Bad’ opens with progressive percussion and softly-worked synths that move euphorically to a pounding drum break, whilst fourth track ‘Jack Nicholson’, featuring an imitable sample of the man himself, is a bass-fuelled shockwave of a track. Final track.

‘Moonbox’ closes the EP in true Blackout fashion, with signature frenetic beats and firing drums rounding off proceedings in style.

Black Sun Empire have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long term accomplices State Of Mind - whom released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via the label earlier this year - feeds into the hype surrounding Blackout as the label looks ahead to 2015.

In her EP Separation, released on Paperfunk Recordings, RiANTHE transposes the very notion of separation into sound: a tight kick-drum thump ticks off the seconds of an expanding rift, a dense bass line pulses like blood retreating from shared memories, and gauzy synth layers slowly shear apart, leaving a transparent corridor of silence where you can hear a new identity crystallising from the shards of former closeness; the music does not merely illustrate detachment—it inhabits it, revealing how an act of separation widens the space to breathe, and how, in that sonic pause between “we” and “I,” it finally becomes possible to hear one’s own echo.

Gazing over the wasted metropolitan landscape of the old capital of this dead-end planet, they activated their internal dataspikes carrying their encrypted tasks and poured over the contents // RETRIEVAL - HIGHER LEVEL SONIC WEAPONRY WITH CAPITAL DESTRUCTION CAPABILITIES - COORDINATES TRANSMITTED & EMBEDDED IN SUB-SURFACE NEURAL LAYER // The subnotes indicated its capacity to disintegrate entire buildings with a highly focussed emission of intense articulated resonant frequencies. Looking around, evidence of this was clear, with gaps in the broken skyline, where the great towers of this city’s ruling megacorp once stood. Heaps of fine grey sand lay in their place, the result of the device’s terrible effect - reducing them to base states of entropy. The hybrid scanned the barren landscape with its ocular implants, marking the coordinate location in the team’s HUD systems and rapidly switching through the various optical spectrums of its threat detection system. They set forward determinedly, moving quickly through the ruins that remained, closing the distance to the objective quickly. They moved in deathly silence, their steps masked by phase cancellation pads in their boots, allowing even their hulking hybrid companion to move as a quietly as the whisper of death on the fringe of the wind. 

They took position upon the upper floor of a broken building, looking out upon the crater in which the device rested. The rival merc crew that was working with frenetic pace below to detach the weapon from its housing were basic operators, their heat signatures highly visible and open radio comms, real amateurs. Without a word, the trio dropped down from the vast height, the air moving over them without resistance as their suits excited and repelled the molecules that moved against them. Touching down in silence, their ruthless assault began - shouldering his chaingun, the team’s EM specialist rained a hail of fire upon their rivals with ruthless precision, each shot locked and guided to their mortal marks by the EM signals produced by the weapons of his very targets. His partner moved quickly from cover to cover, his implants working furiously, hijacking the soldiers senses and systems, disabling them and making them easy targets for the hybrid - charging furiously forward, devastating their ranks with its impossible strength. In mere seconds, the bustling center of activity at the crater lay suddenly silent. Without pause they passed through the carnage and approached the device, and gazed at the warning roughly scrawled on its surface ‘BEWARE!”.

The powerful drum and bass duo - TELEKINESIS - return for their 3rd EP - BEWARE! - on seminal tech label EATBRAIN. Although the name Burr Oak is one which has only just started to become acquainted with the drum & bass genre, the faces behind the outfit have already made their mark over its last formative years. A new venture between The Clamps and Opsen (known for making up one part of the Signs project) their first release through the Trendkill platform sent shockwaves throughout the wider dance music scene. ‘Time Has Come’ and ‘Originate’ were selected by label owner and pivotal figure Prolix, setting a standard for the pair which they’ve followed with their forthcoming single. 

Burr Oak shown that they’re no strangers to high production standards and an enviable work rate. Just over a month from their first release, they have continued their expansion across the world of drum & bass through brand new tracks ‘Bannockburn’ and ‘Struggle’. These are two tracks which signify just how electric the pairing has proven to be, something which has translated into their music. The first of the two is ‘Bannockburn’, with an introduction alluding to just how explosive the drop is building up to become. You’re catapulted through a zipline of shaking subs and slamming drumbeats, with a bassline that drives straight through the tracks core. Both producers show their experience in the way they masterfully manipulate sounds and the result is chaotic, yet still streamlined in its composition. 

The second part of the forthcoming Trendkill single is ‘Struggle’, just as cutthroat as its forerunner, although its hooks cut deeper and deeper between every drum relay. ‘Struggle’ yet again demonstrates that Burr Oak aren’t afraid to go for the jugular and they do this with the utmost precision, something which shines through their expert craftmanship. Stabbing synths slice their way through the mix and before long you’re totally enveloped by the carnage. It’s another monumental step in the evolution of Burr Oak – something which Trendkill are nurturing, as they have done countless times with artists who are now dominating global stages.
