The Bliss Of Extinction

In a new Peaceville podcast series, former Peaceville employee Dave Pybus, responsible for the layout & design of many classic titles (& perhaps more widely known for his time with Anathema & Cradle of Filth), discusses his days at the company at the start of the 1990’s, and talks with some of the bands and artists from back then, reflecting on the ways of the industry and the changes since. In this first episode of his ‘Peaceville Days’ podcast, Dave talks with Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride about the early visions of the band, plus techniques of constructing artwork in the early 90’s, along with some of the tribulations involved in the pre-photoshop era. Also joining the trip down memory lane is a conversation with artist Dave McKean, himself responsible for some of the early iconic My Dying Bride artwork.

The masters of gloom return with an epic 25 minute journey through a chilling tale of superstition & folklore.

My Dying Bride has been the leading light of doom metal since their debut album As the Flower Withers was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992. Influenced by acts such as Celtic Frost and Candlemass, the band’s heavy atmospherics have carved a huge worldwide following over the years and they remain at the pinnacle of the genre.

Following the release of Evinta earlier this year, in which the band marked 20 years of existence with a release of symphonic compositions re-imagining past MDB themes, My Dying Bride present their latest chapter in the form of new EP‘The Barghest O’ Whitby.

This single track, 25 minute epic represents the epitome of poetic grace and funeral soundscapes from one of gothic doom’s most celebrated acts. With a masterful blend of pounding guitar riffs, and sombre atmospheric passages, My Dying Bride takes you through the chilling tale of a supernatural entity hell bent on revenge.

The Barghest O’ Whitby was recorded at Futureworks Studios, Manchester with long-time production partner & engineer, Mags. The release is the first to feature violin/keyboardist Shaun Macgowan, and sees the return of Shaun “Winter“ Taylor-Steels to the drum-stool for this recording. Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström - alongside guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist – are at the peak of their powers right now, and their brand new studio album Dead End Kings provides incontrovertible evidence of their unstoppable artistic momentum. A rich, adventurous and endlessly evocative masterwork that exhibits all the Swedish quintet’s established traits while absorbing countless fresh ideas into that monumental sonic brew, this is plainly the strongest and most beguiling album in the Katatonia catalogue to date. It also proves that sadness comes in many shades and that no one is safe from its cold allure.

“Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level,” says Renkse. ”The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that’s the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved. We don’t want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music.”
Dead End Kings was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios & The City Of Glass. The album was produced by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse, & mixed by David Castillo. Additionally, Katatonia is joined once again by Frank Default on sampling & atmospherics, plus a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering/ex-Octavia Sperati.
