200-250 words detailing production intent and brief interpretation: 

The track combines the original’s vocals with haunting textures, melodic phrases, and a dance beat. Genre/style is between melodic techno/house, pop, and 80s-inspired electronica. I increased the tempo of the song slightly and added a full-sounding chord progression to the chorus for emphasis. For the rest of the track, I use three repeating melodic ideas that get thinner / thicker throughout the track to create tension. One of the melodic ideas sounds like staccato strings and adds drama in certain sections (e.g. “It’s the dreams that we weren’t chasing”). For bass, I switch between Reese bass (for tension), and an analog and FM bass sound to accompany the beat (for release). I employ the drum techniques in class to create a constant beat and effects (such as drum atmos). 

The minor key gives the melodic phrases a haunting aftertaste. To build on the haunting effect and theme of the song, I added details such as echo and pan on the phrase “haunt us” and a warped reversed sample to index “Time Machine” before the verse kicks in. For the middle section, I switched to a trap-style beat at halftime and distorted the vocals to create a dizzy, unsettling effect. For the end section, I combined many of the vocal elements of the track, the sitar sample used in the original, and some vocal chops.
