This release eludes the darker side of my sound, featuring a mixture of tempos, and exploring some techno, halftime, garage, and 140 influences. The project has been a long time in the making, and I’m finally happy to showcase each track + some exciting concepts outside of the music itself.

Static & Strange focuses on non-linear explorations in bass music across a wide variety of soundscapes. Vying for a sound imagined from noir-ish films, abstract theory and a protest of the scourge of hashtag activism, the label was born as a motivation to serve narratives with both audio and visual art.

Founded by Unchained co-founder and label manager Lyndon Jarr; and Mike Airstrike, a long-time producer and Unchained team member, Static & Strange serves as an alternate platform for both their own output as well as that of friends and like-minded artists.

With roots in drum’n’bass, ambient, progressive tech and dubstep, the focus is on experimentation and a “voyage in sonics,” alongside an anything goes approach.

Whilst Drum’n’Bass has been one of their overarching passions since the beginning, their musical paths have deeply explored several trajectories over the years including various forms of progressive, rave, and the early downbeat/trip-hop sound. All these influences are present on the label’s forthcoming catalogue.

The label’s debut release is a two tracker.

‘Sunrise Selection’ is an uplifting jungle come atmospheric broken-techno club track. It runs at a temperature of 130bpm and at the drop is likely a bit of a club banger. ‘Little Peas’ takes the Fracture-esque, 160, 4/4 movement just a little further than where it left off a couple of years ago with progressive atmospherics and off-kilter syncopation.

We’ve found it difficult to explain what is going on with this release - but hoping for vivid explanations from our listeners!

With elements across the entire drum & bass spectrum taking clear leap forwards over the past couple of years, including a high-powered, spaciously technical sound revival, Unchained steps back for a moment to celebrate the deeper ‘vibes’ end of the bass chromatic, yet with a desire to always shift the shape of the genre box.

The legendary DJ Madd is one of those artists whose work continues to carry forward this re-mould.

Whilst many of us agree that UK-influenced dance music is centred around a conversation between the Caribbean sound system world, American Hip Hop, and British Rave culture, US-based DJ Madd ventures away from his classic dub sound to pay homage to richness of darker warm subs, the dominion of the kick and minimal percussive funk.

“This EP is going back to some of my dnb roots. I used to listen to a lot of Digital, Spirit (Rip), Amit, Loxy etc. Artists who laid down the foundations for the halftime sound.Those drum & bass tunes with strange drum patterns and no snare drums had a big impact on me early on, and this EP is a nod to that.”

With a wealth of production behind him and an incredible release heritage spanning hundreds of releases, his Explorer EP is a journey through this more minimal darker take on the classic dubby universe of electronic that he is so well known for pioneering.

Whether firing up a massive soundsystem dance journey or blazing up solo, this EP should make its mark on any card carrying ‘head’ out there.
