Week #4

She was in the garden
When it roared through Harmon
On that hot summer day

It was home he was headed
To where they’d soon be wedded
On that last weekend in May

But the sun got busy hidin’
He saw the storm on the horizon
The clouds turned dark and grey

With no time to take cover
It claimed her and three others
And everything in its way

Then it headed east to Soulard
Right past the freight yard
And took out the entire south side

It arrived without warning
‘Cause it hadn’t been stormin’
So there was no time to hide

Homes, schools and saloons
Lay in devastating ruins
After it cut a swath a mile wide

They weren’t ready for its wrath
So it spared no one in its path
And four hundred more soon died

The damage was so alarmin’
And now no reason to stay in Harmon
He caught the first train from that place

Though he didn’t have the means
He thought, “There aint no twisters in N’Orleans!”
And fled with his suitcase

To try his luck on the Gulf Coast
That’s where he wanted to be most
When dreamin’ of her pretty face

Little did he know
Louisiana was hurricane-prone
And the worst place he could go

She was taken by that twister
And boy how he missed’er
But Louisiana was the worst place he could go
