The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

Under the artificial dome of the city, light from the dense urban landscape wraps itself against the overwhelming facades of towering habitats and server blocks, intermingling at the edges of imperceptible alleyways shrouded in darkness only broken by the flickering nocturnal emblems of deep night haunts of sleaze and virtual hedonism. The twins are at home here, every edge of the city mapped in their hybrid cerebellum, connected exquisitely with inter-dimensional technology stolen from the most intimate grasp of the AI governing the sprawl. Shattering the silence of the night with the abrasive roar of refined combustion and the precisely engineered mechanisms of their vehicles, the streets fly beneath them - acting as one, every corner taken with nothing to spare, utterly in the present - surgeons of the moment. The drones giving chase have no chance, unable to compensate for the perfectly calculated errors of humanity, every recalibration coming too late - THE CHASE is relentless and swift ... the immaculate pair vanish into the dense depths of the labyrinthine underworld with their haul of sonic artifacts.

Remarkable twin Russian production entity, Gancher & Ruin, follow up last year's induction to the label on Eatbrain's Mirror Universe LP with THE CHASE EP, delivering 4 powerful neurofunk weapons including a collaboration with label boss JADE in the form of gargantuan track JUMP! Known widely in the circles of the darkest drum and bass for their heavy sound, with this release the pair demonstrate a complex understanding of neurofunk, moving deftly between verdant sci-fi beauty and dense raw energy. The cross-continental sounds of Delta9 Recordings have been making themselves known over recent months. That’s due to the high-calibre releases they’ve been dropping onto a worldwide fan base, despite being based out of both Berlin and Bergamo, which both stand as two of Europe’s biggest cultural hubs. Founded in 2012, the combined influence of both cities have brought forward incredibly slick releases, with their dark, minimalistic and techstep sounds flooding the market and drawing a huge fan base towards the imprint. Their forthcoming EP from Lao Wai is likely to have the same effect, appealing directly to the heads and staying true to the underground realms which forged the label in its earliest days. Between ‘Physical Contact’ and ‘Hypernormal’, the drum & bass maestro proves why he landed a position within UKF’s ‘Ones to Watch in 2018’ feature, because his records are unshakeable, whilst progressing with an energy which lends itself directly to Delta9’s stellar back catalogue of music.

‘Physical Contact’ leads you into the fray, with sweeping atmospherics, slowly gyrating drums and moody percussion which hides underneath the mix. Slowly the track comes into play, taking you down a minimalist chasm streamlined by distorted vocal samples. ‘Birthplace’ follows the same manipulated moniker, with smashing hi-hats moving you through a progressing drop, one which leaves you freefalling against rolling breaks and an old-school vibe which doesn’t go unmissed. ‘Factories in Manchester’ submerges you into the deep end, with a bassline that becomes heavier layer after layer before you’re finally enveloped by its weight. ‘Hypernormal’ is the EP’s final addition, with clapping snares and a rhythm which skips between each beat pattern. The drums are cut-throat, with a jagged edge that juts throughout the track’s segments and presents a side of Delta9 which is clear competition for any of the more renowned imprints within the scene.

Delta9 Recordings are one of the leading independent labels to come through over the past twelve months and with each release they’re beginning to build on this reputation. With more music in the pipeline, their stepping it up another gear and 2018 will stand as a pivotal moment.

Bredren have been steadily carving out their own niche for several years now, to ever more acclaim. Last year they started their own Bredren Invites night at the legendary Fuse club in Brussels, their home stomping grounds, to showcase their style alongside likeminded spirits such as SpectraSoul, S.P.Y., Alix Perez and Skeptical.

Rampage invited them to bring the concept to the stage of the biggest drum&bass and dubstep party in the world, and bring a few of their resident dj’s along for the ride. To celebrate this appearance, they put together an EP with all the dj’s that joined them; Phase, MC Mota, One87, M-zine and Scepticz: four excursions into the deep end of the drum&bass spectrum.
