Fingerman's Boogie Beatdown 80's Edition (September 2021) (Part 1)

This week’s special guest is Fran Deeper, a legend in the House / Nu-Disco world, and a huge contributor and influencer to the scene.  Born in Mexico but now living in Palma de Mallorca in Spain, Fran is the owner of the prestigious record label Spa in Disco, which has published more than 150 releases featuring some of the biggest Disco artists from around the globe. Some of the tracks have reached the number one position on the sales charts, while many others have been repeatedly featured in the Top 100 of the most important digital platforms like Junodownload, Beatport and Traxsource. 

Fran has a distinctive yet eclectic sound which fuses nu-disco and electronica, and his extensive musical career had led to gigs in prestigious clubs all over the world, Madrid, Mexico City, Ibiza, Tulum, London, Guadalajara, Berlin, San Francisco, Marseille, Jakarta, Barcelona, Milan, Stockholm or Bali, to name a few. He has shared the stage with some of the most important global representatives of the style like Pete Herbert, Rayko, Thomass Jackson, Ilya Santana, or Ray Mang, making him a veteran of the dance floors.

 Thanks to his long career, he's also collaborated with some of the most well-known international record labels like Midnight Riot, Rare Wiri, NDYD, Spirit Soul Records, Love Harder Records, or Hot Digits. Besides, he's also collaborated with some of the top blogs like 'Music is 4 Lovers', 'Gouranga,' 'Le Visiteur,' 'Deep House Moscow,' 'Red Bull,' 'The London Disco Society' and even radios like 'Vibes Radio,' 'The Basement Radio,' and currently on a weekly program for the prestigious 'Ibiza Global Radio.'

 All in all, he's one of those DJs that feels exceptionally comfortable playing the dance floor, that surprises you with his musical selection and, even more importantly, that achieves the golden rule: Never stop dancing.

Welcome to the first ever Cookie-Dough Guest mix were we have invited DJ, producer and re-edit whiz kid Henry Greenwood to dig deep into his collection and put together a mix of records that have influenced him over the years. A prominent figure on the re-edits scene his re-work of Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buffalo Stance’ was one of the biggest re-edits of 2013 receiving the ultimate ‘thumbs up’ from Mr Re-Edit himself Greg Wilson. A few words from Henry…

This was simultaneously the most fun and the hardest thing to do! I decided to go with the honest approach. I’ll probably live to regret it, but when I was 9, I was into pop music, and that ‘s how I’ve started the mix – If you stick with it past the early guilty pleasures (i.e. ace pop tunes) I’ll be really grateful!

The mix ended up quite organically in three sections. It kicks off with tunes I loved growing up, gradually moving into a house party/bar residency/studenty theme. The second section moves into 4/4 territory, and the third section has a kind of after-hours vibe. There are a few pop culture references sprinkled throughout for you as well if you like that sort of thing.

This is a pretty good snapshot, but couldn’t be definitive – it was so hard to keep it to around 90 minutes! There was a whole 2-step/rave/DnB section that hit the cutting room floor, and there’s very little disco as the two Roller Disco mixes I’ve done kind of have that covered. It was a really personal thing to do actually, I relived some really nice memories and hopefully it explains some of the bits and bobs I come up with.
