With further artist success and festival stages across the world, 2014 already stands as a monumental year for RAM Records; now the world’s finest d&b imprint follows the success of Andy C’s Nightlife concept with the launch of the label’s new compilation series, RAMlife. 

Mixed by label stalwarts, Loadstar, RAMlife showcases the very best contemporary releases from RAM, providing a glimpse into the genre’s evolving sounds courtesy of both established figures and the new breed of drum & bass stars that RAM prides itself upon.

RAMlife contains upfront tracks from RAM’s own bassline deviants DC Breaks, as well as the dark and tenacious compositions of Frankee; all names featured serve as an affirmation of the independent label’s ongoing prominence. Opening with the VIP mix of stomping anthem ‘Bomber’, you can expect further exclusive cuts from The Prototypes, D Bridge & Vegas, Dimension, Mind Vortex and Culture Shock, plus remixes from the likes of Audio, Ivy Lab and Prolix; every track pays homage to the original with a signature twist from each remixer.

Loadstar’s debut album ‘Future Perfect’ (released in 2013) won critical props from The Guardian to Mixmag, RWD and DJ Mag, from Hype to High Contrast, MTV to Radio 1 and beyond, and helped propel them across the UK and on international tours that have crossed the planet. Recent single, ‘Stepped Outside’, was further confirmation that they’re one of drum & bass’s real star turns, and their ‘RAMlife’ mix will satiate those fans hungry for ‘Future Perfect’s’ successor.

After only 6 months since its first release, Cyberfunk is wasting no time in delivering the “funk”. The brand new label means business bringing us a 4 track EP with new bits from Incognito, Phentix and two collabs by label boss man Xtrah & Mefjus.

Manchester’s mighty North Base deliver their first outing on Mayan Audio with an unforgiving single Illuminatus / Headspace [MYN023]. ‘Illuminatus’ had its debut at the mighty Let It Roll festival this summer and both tracks have recently featured on Friction’s Radio 1 Drum & Bass guest mix and its clear to see with this release why North Base are on the rise.

The lead side ‘Illuminatus’ sets the suspense entering with a cinematic string section shrouded with epic deep drums pounding an ominous war cry to the drop, unleashing a spin-tingling reese that hooks you in over solid low end layered with dangerously distorted overtones and twisting transitions to suit.

On the flipside ‘Headspace’ starts with big swelling dubby pads, creating a psychedelic vibe, all formed on top of a trickle of bleeps and percussive keynotes. This all heralds a rounded bass line which bubbles alongside a crisp snappy drum track. Gorgeous atmospherics and slick breaks build a warm but edgy space for the funky fresh groove to hook your head in!

This is straight up dance floor material at its best with ultra clean synth power, heavy hitting drums and bass lines that would make Kim Jong Un run and hide.

2018 is almost upon us, DJ SS is planning one of the biggest releases his label has ever put together in its 27 year history and it starts right here with this incredible roof-raiser from the one and only Drumsound & Bassline Smith. A fittingly powerful track for such a high profile project, trust us – no one is ready for this. You’re not ready. We’re not ready. The World Ain’t Ready…  
Drum & bass titans Drumsound & Bassline Smith first appeared on SS’s Formation in 2001 with the still-savage double-A ‘Lazor Razor / Kilo’. Delivered just as their collaborative project was beginning to truly take shape, it caught a scorching moment in time for the artists, the labels and the rampant dark tech rolling sound at the time. It also led to a follow-up release on the label’s 100th release with the equally timeless ‘Fallin’’ several years later.  
Back to the future with full circle fire: Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s chiselled riff-hyped anthem ‘World Ain’t Ready’ is the perfect launch track for the ‘Formation 200’ album. A monolithic document featuring some of the most exciting innovators in the game old and new, ‘Formation 200’ is a celebration of everything the label has achieved in its near-30 year history. The longest running label in drum & bass, Formation and its various side labels have played a role in early careers of many massively influential acts: DJ Hazard, Commix, Nero, The Prototypes, G Dub, John B, Matrix, Twisted Individual, Distorted Minds, the list goes on and on. 
200 releases deep, still firing from all cannons and super-charged with energy and innovation for the next generation, Formation Records is true pillar of the scene and remains so to this day. Full details on the ‘Formation 200’ album will land next week. In the meantime, enjoy this on-point lead early taster from one of most consistent names in the game. We ain’t ready!
