Black Star w/ Lee Fields & The Expressions - Bright Star Comes and Goes (Steely Chan's Blender Mash)

We’re winding down our Mos Def / Lee Fields tribute project with the final tracks of the mixtape. Today’s blend is the longest in the series and has quite the backgrounder. “Hurricane” was the title track to the 1999 film about the life of wrongly-imprisoned boxer, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. The song was a collaborative effort by the heavy hitters in the Okayplayer camp (Common, Mos Def, Dice Raw, Jazzyfatnastees, Flo Brown & The Roots) with each verse highlighting different moments in Carter’s life. Apparently, the lyrical structure was inspired by Bob Dylan’s classic 1975 protest song of the same name.

We thought the vocals were a good match for Lee Fields’ ‘Do You Love Me’ and feel the somber mood of the finished mix really complements the lyrical content. A timeless tale for the ages....enjoy!

The Roots, Common, Mos Def w/ The Expressions - Do You Love Hurricane? (Steely Chan's Blender Mash)

Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def) was on the Colbert Report a few days ago with Talib Kewli and performed a new song as Black Star. With the official retiring of the Mos Def moniker, we conclude our month long Mos Def/Lee Fields tribute series. To close it out, we’ve combined the classic posse cut ‘B-Boy Document’ with ‘Money I$ King’, a personal fav from Lee Fields’ ‘My World’ record.

Tim Dog is best known for “Fuck Compton”, one of the top diss tracks of all time and catalyst for the infamous West Coast/East Coast rivalry in hip hop. However, we always thought of him as bringing the hardcore element to the Ultramagnetic MCs. This week we’re giving his anthem, “Bronx Nigga”, a fresh take by blending it with Lefties’ “Fais Do Do”. This also concludes our mix project featuring the raw funk rhythms of Lefties Soul Connection with golden era hip hop.

Gone is that ominous Godzilla sample from the original and in its place, a collection of fuzz-toned funk grooves. We think it sounds like a throwback to late 80s, JB-inspired hip hop.

Common’s “1-9-9-9” was the lead single off Rawkus Records’ “Soundbombing II” compilation. In hindsight, this collection really seemed to capture the zeitgeist of late 90s, East Coast indie hip hop. We decided to re-freak “1-9-9-9” with gratuitous layers of bongo rhythms courtesy of Shawn Lee’s “Bongo Fury” and “26”. Highly recommended for fans of The Incredible Bongo Band.

Common, Sadat X & Shawn Lee - Bongo 99 (Steely Chan's Blender Mash)

We’re concluding our Rawkus Records tribute with a Black Star mix. The dream team pairing of Mos Def and Talib Kweli defined the label and arguably led the resurgence of late 90’s, indie hip hop in NYC. We took their first single “Definition”, and layered it over a sparse, b-movie groove cobbled together from Shawn Lee’s “Spooky Street” and “Skunky Funky”. We deliberately went against our tendencies for the wall of sound approach to focus attention on the rhymes. Enjoy!

Next week (possibly two) we’ll be giving some love to more of our unfinished sketches and “b-side beats” before we launch into our next mix series. Onwards to March Madness!

Spring is in the air so we decided to do some cleaning and dust off some old sketches. This week we’re revisiting “Callin Out”, Lyric Born’s breakthrough single from his 2003 debut. We threw a bunch of fuzzy bass tones underneath the vocals and kept the treatment pretty minimal.  We’re big fans of LB’s gritty voice so that’s what we emphasized in the mix. Can you dig it?

We’re still in spring cleaning mode and we’ve rescued yet another unfinished sketch from our scrap heap. Our song of interest this week is The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”. Instrumental accompaniment is a medley of Shawn Lee’s  “Prog Punk” and “Lowrider”. The result of this musical blasphemy is an uptempo stomper that’s suitable for a groovy 60s dance party, a Mad Men theme party or a gathering of Mod revivalists. Enjoy!

Lord Finesse & Ebo Taylor - Keep The Crowd In Heaven (Steely Chan's Blender Mash)

The original incarnation of the Crooklyn Dodgers was a hip hop supergroup consisting of Special Ed, Masta Ace and Buckshot with production by A Tribe Called Quest. Their raison d’etre was to create the title track for Spike Lee’s 1994 film, <i>Crooklyn</i>. We sped up the group’s collectively laid back rhymes and fused it with the raw, heavy, afro psych-funk of German duo, The Whitefield Brothers (also known as The Poets of Rhythm). “Rampage” was originally an obscure, crate diggers’ 10” release. Luckily for us, Now-Again Records included the track, in addition to other rarities, when they reissued The Whitefield’s debut, <i>In The Raw</i>. We hope you enjoy this Brooklyn-Munich pairing as we continue exploring new ways to connect golden era hip hop with global funk rhythms.

But alas, this also signaled the end of the golden era and quickly led to the coastal rivalries and the divisive underground/indie/backpacker movement. This week we’re messing with a 5 mic classic, Biggie’s “Juicy”, and infusing it with some super dynamite soul courtesy of Dutch outfit, The Soul Snatchers. What tribute to the golden era of hip hop would be complete without some straight up battle rhymes? To that end we’re shining this week’s spotlight on Roxanne Shante who was involved in two of the most memorable battles of all time: the Roxanne Wars and The Bridge Wars (Juice Crew vs. Boogie Down Productions). “Big Mama” is a non-stop barrage of dope punchlines aimed at rival female MCs - classic! We fused Shante’s irascible battle rhymes with the raw, heavy funk grooves of UK multi-instrumentalist and producer Adam Gibbons (aka Lack Of Afro). This joint will have your head nodding and fingers snapping. Enjoy!

We had a great response to our last Biggie mix so we moved Big Poppa to the front of the line for an encore performance. This time we’re spotlighting “Party and Bullshit”, his debut single off the soundtrack to the comedy film, Who’s The Man? Spoiler alert: MC Lyte’s debut single, “I Cram to Understand U”, tells the tale of a relationship falling apart due to crack addiction. The original was quite sparse musically but this blend adds a dose of head nodding funk courtesy of Breakestra’s “Posed To Be”. We felt the hypnotic groove could *potentially* distract from Lyte’s intricate storytelling; hence the spoiler. Enjoy!
