Exist no.18 brings two very special UK artists - Steevio & Duckett

Steevio is a live electronic musician who runs the Freerotation Electronic Music Festival, Mindtours record label, and Freerotation record label with his partner Suzybee. Steevio specialises in live improvisations on an analogue modular synthesizer, and records everything as one off tracks in real time. He also performs live as part of AV duo Steevio & Suzybee in clubs and festivals worldwide.

Duckett is a producer and performer from Wales and a core resident of the renowned festival Freerotation. Releasing on labels including Until My Heart Stops, Freerotation, Wisdom Teeth, Greta Cottage Workshop, Galdoors, Bercuise Heroique, etc his music is difficult to pin down but sits somewhere on the edge of house, techno, ambient and experimental.

He hosts a monthly show on Mutant Radio and is about to launch his own label /platform. Highlights worth checking are his Boiler Room live studio sets and Hessle Audio radio guest appearances.

Steevio's DJ set consists of all his own darker techno and broken techno tunes, mostly vinyl releases, a couple of digital only releases, and a recently recorded live jam. Much of this material hasn’t been used in his mixes before.

Ducketts mix consists of entirely exclusive material comprising some upcoming releases and more predominantly includes some exploratory live studio jams at 90bpm.  All fresh material.

Exist Palestine brings forward the highly talented local artists and the brightest musical visionaries in the global electronic music scene. Exist seeks to build bridges between international artists, Palestinian sound innovators, the many that have been displaced, and musicians who are unable to attend the festival due to politically set testrictions. The lineups consist of artists who participated in Exist Festival 2019 as well as the ones who will be invited to play the next editions.

I have literally hundreds of unreleased tracks, spanning 7 years languishing on my hard drives, as I record everything live and improvised in one take usually directly to stereo and I record almost every day. The problem is finding the tracks good enough to release, as it requires many hours of listening time, and my natural impulse is to just record more stuff rather than listen back. 
The idea behind Mindtours Digital is to finally get these tunes out there on a regular basis. Each release will have a particular musical flavour or theme.

'After 15 years of producing techno live on hardware, in 2009 I began building a dedicated machine on which I could totally improvise an entire techno performance from a blank canvas that would give me more creative control than anything I could do with my previous setup of drum machines and synthesizers.  My modular rig is 100% analogue; there’s no computer involved, or memories to save sounds or sequencing patterns, so everything is improvised in real time.. 
Volumes 1 and 2 were the early experimentations on my newly built machine. I record everything I do during the practice sessions for live gigs. All the music in the series are out-takes from these practice sessions, and the tracks from Volume 3 and the forthcoming Volume 4 all come from a three day period in practice for a recent live gig at Delete, Bournemouth, UK.'

This is a raw DJ mix I did in 1999 of my own material and tunes I co-wrote with Charlie Henderson. These were tunes that were released on Roost Records, Torque, Adapted Vinyl and Optimum, under the aliases Mindtours, 3000003 and Free Radicals in the 1990s.
This is the stuff I was playing at Free Festivals and illegal warehouse raves when I first started DJing. (previously I only played live)
It's all very intense and raw, but I think it captures the energy of the free party movement at the time in defiance of the oppression by the UK government post Criminal Justice Act.
All of this music was recorded live using an SH101, Nord Lead, TR909,TB303, Atari ST. My 3000003 stuff was all pure Acid until 1996 when I began drifting away from the TB303, so most of this material has very little 303 in it.

All sequencing and sound manipulation was jammed live on Steevio’s modular synthesizer, without the use of a computer, or EQ / compression / mastering or any other processing  in a deliberate attempt to capture a live electronic music performance directly to vinyl.

Volume 2 in the series is 4 tracks of live improvised analogue music created entirely in real time on a eurorack modular synthesizer + Moog Voyager. The tracks are extracted directly from the practice sessions for Steevio's live jams at the Freerotation Electronic Music Festival which he and partner Suzybee organise.
All sequencing and sound creation is analogue, live and unplanned, and the music is unmastered and recorded raw in stereo directly from the modular.

The idea behind the label is to release tunes quickly that may never have seen the light of day on vinyl, with a specific focus on live improvisation on hardware with little or no processing to capture special moments.
MD-01 features 4 real time analogue improvisations by Steevio on his modular synth. These are all raw unplanned jams, with improvised sequencing recorded straight down to stereo with no processing or mastering.
