Without the influence of dub, there’s no house and techno as we know it. The history of dance, especially underground dance music, is in many ways a history of dub. And the UK, thanks to its unique cultural mix and pioneering sound system culture, has played a massive role in the spread of these sounds.  

Joy Ride 84 is a tribute to dub's enduring and frequently surprising influence on everything from four to the floor techno and house to disco, post-punk, breakbeat and leftfield pop. 

It’s the old school meets the new, sometimes the very new, or tracks that are 30 years old but are only being heard for the first time today. It is perhaps the most ambitious mix I’ve attempted to date.

JOY RIDE is a mix series that tears through the past, present and future of club music, building narratives through sound.

On the latest outing, the ghost of Ron Hardy has dropped in, bringing along a bag of stone cold classic cuts and a general disregard for convention on how a record should be played and heard. 

Disco can get a little frothy at times, so I wanted to make a mix that's tough but not too banging. I never got to hear Ron play, but I was a regular at Optimo in Glasgow for several years, and when I hear people describe nights at the Music Box I feel I can relate.

As well thinking carefully about the sounds (from Patrice Rushen to that very particular sonic palette of early 90s Strictly Rhythm to contemporary reworks of productions that have spilled from the club into popular consciousness) I have also tried to offer a modern take on a mixing style that dances on the edge of feasibility, choosing the exhilaration of a wild blend or an outrageous mood shift over the safe option...because to err is human, but please don't be boring. 

Screw your courage to the sticking place. Let's go.

The first hour at Optimo (Espacio) when the club ran weekly at Sub Club every Sunday was revered and savoured by us Optimo Kids, while giving those who were never really going to like it cause to make a swift exit. “You Won’t It, Sugar” the posters promised, and so it was for many. But for spme intrepid sonic explorers, willing to go on for the ride, it opened the portal to musical riches beyond anything I’ve heard from other DJs in the 20 years since. 

This mix is a pale imitation of what Keith and Jonnie would pull out each week - a piece of musical fan fiction of you like.  It features tracks from Jorja Chalmers, Nicolini, Aphex Twin, Happy Mondays, Moodymann working with Róisín Murphy, Sabres of Paradise, plenty of space disco, a bit of vintage electro, various Optimo Music releases from the last few years, and some oddball items that wouldn’t normally belong on any dance floor.
