The Mahaki tribe gathered around the ancient stones amidst the African trees. These last few days had been a celebration of the change in the seasons, the sands had begun to blow, the dusty winds swept through the air on the breeze. They raised their hands to the skies above and began to chant, one drum banged and banged and banged. The wind grew stronger and their voices carried far and wide.

An alumna of the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, Maya Medvesek AKA Nightwave has kept busy in the years since, running her own Nightrave party series in Glasgow and launching the Heka Trax imprint with her “Luxor” EP plus additional releases from Big Dope P and Blastto. The latest Heka Trax release is by Glaswegian R&B duo Bossy Love, out on Friday, March 11, and their “Bossy Love” single is another example of Nightwave’s keen A+R ear, while her remix, premiered here, showcases her significant and consistent production skills.

The original “Bossy Love” is a finger-snapping slow jam featuring a luscious vocal turn from vocalist Amandah Wilkinson over John Baillie Jr.’s stuttering pop production, but Nightwave extracts the dominant lyrical boast - “Ain’t nobody better than me” - and flips it into an insistent hook. Burbling synths circle the vocal until you’re completely convinced of its truth, and additional rhythmic filigrees lift it further into dance floor bliss before an affecting piano outro. Amandah’s assertion that “We’re making gold, son” certainly applies to Nightwave’s work here.

Glasgow's Junto Club return with their second EP. In their own words...

This is the second in our planned trilogy of Junto Club EPs. If the first was the birth of the Junto Club, this is the middle-aged existential crisis. 

We've followed the same ethos as the first EP, allowing the music to develop organically rather than being restricted by considerations of genre.  Naturally, this was shaped by our experiences of the first EP. 

While the first EP developed through our experimentation with new sounds behind closed doors, this EP was the result of our attempts to retrospectively understand those creations and the interpretations of others. These reflections were mixed with our reimagining of those discoveries and our experiences of their live performance. 

Warm Me Up is not the same as the Junto Club EP because those virgin sessions can never be recreated. Nor should they be. This is the middle aged existential crisis of the Junto Club. And we hope you enjoy dancing to it.

After the success of their debut split EP with Muslimgauze which sold out in record time, the southern Italian male/female duo Underspreche return to Optimo Trax for their first EP in their own right. Three tracks of deliciously psychedelic, advanced techno grooves filled with subtle syncopations and head melting sound design. First release in the new Optimo Trax colour scheme.

Toby Gale's EP on Activia Benz was one of our favourites of last year. If you dozed on it, it's the sort of twinkling VGM that plays blissfully on the mind long after an insomniac SNES marathon. It's fair to say Toby's the David 'Donkey Kong' Wise for the emoji generation – an understated savant of Nintendo console cuteness, updated for anyone who tripped on early HudMo and 'Glass Swords'.

Toby's new record arrives on Apothecary Compositions and is every bit the 'level up'. Where we haven't lost any of the previous record's 'Ocarina of Time' melancholia, we've gained a spritz of dynamic new sampling and ballistic synth work. Colourful, unique and delightfully oddball, it's music for fans of autre beatmakers like Iglooghost, Jameszoo and Maxo. Our pick of the litter goes to "Jet" which recalls the best bits of Slackk's Patrice & Friends project and is every bit as fizzling as its name suggests.
