For a long time I stared at the wreckage.
Eyes transfixed on the smoke gently rising up above. 
Wondering. Was it my short fuse that set this place alight? 
Maybe the wood was rotten from the start 
and burning it down saved this groaning old building 
some years of torture.
I stepped slowly backwards from the blaze. Pause.
Thinking that I'd caught a glimpse of you, I moved.
Plans for a grander abode in one hand and
a fire extinguisher in the other I rushed towards
the flames. Seeing your empty hands
I burned the wrecage to rubble. Afraid that
you'd only come visit on a day
that best suited your convenience.

I'm taking my final steps away
from this now & I see that it never belonged 
to me at all. Just a piece of the world
that wasn't mine or yours but only ours
fading into some corner of my brain & yours.
To be reinstated but never replaced -
the building they'll build where ours once stood.
