Oniria

The world's largest iceberg, A23a — equivalent to the size of Rhode Island- is endlessly spinning near the South Orkney Islands, about 375 miles from the Antarctic Peninsula. Its dance is caused by a phenomenon in fluid mechanics known as a Taylor column. It's essentially a rotating cylinder that forms when there's an obstruction in a flow. The A23a is trapped in a kind of ocean vortex, a Taylor column.
There are many paths a collaboration can take you down. Although the typical one tends to be shaped as a kind of dialog or turn-taking, I like the most those that, instead, become as sawing a seed and watching what happens then, including some active intervention: somebody tells an idea, or provides some materials or tracks to you and they start a self-organizing process in one's DAW. That's what happened here: @user-737426987 Ambient Annie provided some tracks that made some musical sense by themselves, but I used them as seeds for something different though related. Another of Ambient Annie's relevant contributions to this track has been in providing a concept, even though this was originally unintentional: some of our email conversations deal with natural phenomena, and therefore Antarctica, its fauna and icebergs gracefully popped up. Some months later, the seeds swelled, stems grew and leaves appeared, giving way to the flowering that you can now listen to.
During the final mixing rounds, Nyarlathotep, the three-lobed burning eye creature from Lovecraft's cosmogonies, passing his crawling chaos through the throat of @lhtrah Lht (another SC artist you should listen to), unexpectedly contributed with some primordial chants to this track: my degree in Miskatonik studies allowed me to decode the singing as "I will die and nobody will remember me", which is quite appropriate for an iceberg that is slowly melting. As far as I could find out this song was first featured in a film by Alejandro Jodorowsky, "Fando y Lis" (1968).

Disquiet Junto Project 0445: Aare Tribute
The Assignment: Read maps of a river as a graphic score.

This project is the second of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2020 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 2 through 6 under the motto “Tektonik” (“Tectonics”). For this reason, a German translation is provided below. We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the second year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern. Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects will be played on a listening booth at the Steinatelier on September 5, as well as being aired on Radio RaBe (rabe.ch), an independent local radio station partnering with the festival.

Step 1: Look at the three maps below, all of the river Aare, a tributary that circumnavigates the city of Bern. One is from the late 18th century. The other two are modern renditions from Google Maps.

Disquiet Junto Project 0450: Texture Analysis
The Assignment: Create a piece of music from sounds related to working with rocks.

Welcome to the 450th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project. Thanks to everyone who has participated, supported, and pitched in along the way.

This project is the third of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2020 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 2 through 6 under the motto “Tektonik” (“Tectonics”). For this reason, a German translation is provided below. We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the second year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern. Step 1: Download the field recordings made at Carlo Bernasconi AG, a company that has been working in stone for over a century. The sounds range from machines to manual tools to spatial ambience.

Step 2: Listen for aspects of the recordings that attract your ears. Focus on textures in particular.

Step 3: Create a piece of music combining elements from as few or as many as you chose in Step 2.

Disquiet Junto Project 0451: Ursula’s Silences
The Assignment: Make music inspired by a line from A Wizard of Earthsea.

Step 1: In the classic fantasy novel A Wizard of Earthsea, its author, Ursula K. Le Guin, writes the following: “For a word to be spoken, there must be silence. Before, and after.” While the words are her own, of course, they are spoken not by the narrator, but by the book’s main character. The statement occurs toward the end of the book. For emphasis, Le Guin informs the reader that the character, whose name is Ged, speaks the words “slowly.”

Step 2: Consider how the statement can be applied to music, to sound, to the linear unfolding of a composition.

Step 3: Record a piece of music inspired by the Le Guin text: one sonic object at a time, with attention paid to the spaces, the silences, between those objects as they are introduced.
