In episode 1, Aris talks to Henk-Jan Honing, professor in Music Cognition at both the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). In this episode they talk about the musicality of life. What is musicality? Is it different from speech? And is musicality something with a long evolutionary history that we share with other animals? Find the answer to these questions and learn all about beat perception and relative pitch in our first episode.

Görkem Arıkan is an interdisciplinary sound artist and performer, music technologist at SoundLAB, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, and co-founder of non-profit experimental music collective A.I.D. As a research associate at the Institute of Sonology, and a research group member at STEIM, he is currently working with car mechanics', exploring the aspect of listening and sound in their work while making a performative sound installation and a documentary based on this research.

“There is not only one reality”. On the search of his own imaginative belief systems Aris Leon likes to experiment within cross-disciplinary environments. From using scientific methods within the arts and vice versa he tries to translate natural phenomena into technocratic organisms. In this landscape of thoughts his environmental activism leads him to a conscious and practical mentality. Playing at the arbitrary intersections between humans and non-humans; movement, electronics, and programming are tools that make him lose the sense of time.


Dariya Trubina

From tangible materials to interrelational practices, Dariya’s practice and research revolves around themes of connectivity, tactility, oral and material storytelling, voice (language) as matter and mechanism of emancipation. Her main materials are textile, textual composition, sound and physical performance. Archives, indexing, traces and relics are the current subjects of her artistic research.

Communication and social relations are in a debate of unanswered questions in Alberts works. Everyday reflections are the foundation of a bigger picture where different interpretations are the intention. It all comes together in spaces and atmospheres without beginning and endings such as video loops and interactive installations confronting the viewer with the presence in time.

In the second episode Albert Rask, student at the audiovisual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, is asking the question: can we trust what we hear?

In this episode he talks about the use of recordings and imagination in the film industry, memory, and therapy.

In the third and final episode Dariya Trubina, first year student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (BA TXT), talks to artist Spela Petric, a new media artist and former scientific researcher.

In this episode we explore listening not in relation to the field of sound, but listening as a relational practice. What happens when we pay attention to something other than the human existence? Like plants, for instance. In this episode you will discover how plants ‘play’. And how can we challenge the anthropocentric approach?

Ad Blom: ‘ Kom uit je professionele bubbel’
Innovatie binnen de zorg door middel van Kunst en cultuur
 
In deze tweede aflevering vertelt Ad Blom over de innovatie binnen de zorg om vorm te geven aan het toenemende belang van ‘kwaliteit van leven’ als een waarde in relatie tot ‘gezondheid’. Maar hoe doe je dat dan? 
 
Ad Blom vertelt over hoe kunst en cultuur het welzijn van de cliënt binnen de zorg verbeteren, en waar de zorgprofessionals mee te maken krijgen wanneer waarden in de zorg, zoals welzijn, vrijheid en privacy, voorop komen te staan. Hierbij is persoonsgericht werken nodig om cliënten en bewoners van een zorginstelling te leren kennen en maatwerk te leveren. 

Innovatie binnen de zorg is een lange weg waarin zorgprofessionals serieus hun aanpak moeten veranderen en soms ook een deel van hun autonomie van hun eigen vakgebied moeten opgeven. En bovenal, het kost veel tijd. Wat is de afweging om dit te doen? Hoeveel lekkers en leuks kunnen we de cliënt bieden? Wat is de balans tussen vrijheid en veiligheid?
 
Het loont! zegt Ad Blom. Het geeft de zorgprofessionals verdieping in hun vakgebied en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Door de samenwerking van zorgprofessionals met andere disciplines ontstaan er prachtige samenwerkingen in een creatief veld. Welzijnsmedewerkers bereiden samen met kunstenaars sessies voor in dans, muziek en poëzie. Je begint in je eigen vakgebied, maar door co-creatie en te vragen wat er vanuit die andere discipline belangrijk of ‘natuurlijk’ is, ontstaat er een meerwaarde voor de cliënt en/of voor het werkproces. En het meest belangrijke, het welzijn van de cliënt, wordt (sterk) verbeterd.

Dick Rijken: ‘ Doe af en toe eens vijf minuten je ogen dicht en luister’.
De inzet van geluid in de zorg vraagt om maatwerk.

In de derde en laatste aflevering bevraagt Dick Rijken onderzoeker Erwin van de Vlugt. Hoe kan Van de Vlugt, in zijn onderzoek binnen de zorg met ouderen met een psychische aandoening, het beste experimenteren met geluid om het gedrag van de cliënt te kunnen beïnvloeden en de leefomgeving van de cliënt ten aanzien van geluid kan veraangenamen. Het maken van een geluidsontwerp op maat, begint met het begrijpen van de geluidsbelevingswereld van de ander.
 
Hoe fungeert geluid als (te grote) prikkel en wat is de rol van een onderliggend mechanisme dat het koppelt aan de persoonlijke ervaring van dat geluid? Wat is voor de ontvanger betekenisvol? Zijn er geluiden die we collectief als veilig ervaren? Kunnen we er dan zomaar vanuit gaan dat deze geluiden de wereld van mensen met dementie veraangenamen?
Als je geluid interactief maakt, met welke prikkels moet je dan rekening houden? Wat zijn de criteria? Het is constant zoeken naar de persoonlijke balans tussen de eerdere geluidservaringen van de cliënt, de plek en de context waarin het geluid aanwezig is of juist niet.
 
Om geluid een belangrijke rol te laten spelen bij de kwaliteit van leven van ouderen met een psychische aandoening is dus maatwerk nodig.  Een geluidsontwerp moet in samenwerking met de cliënt, de hulpverlener, de maker, de onderzoeker en de professionals gebeuren. Samen moeten zij een visie vormen over wat geluid betekent in de zorg die geboden wordt en hoe deze concreet uitgevoerd wordt. Bijvoorbeeld door iedereen schoenen te laten dragen waarvan de zolen nauwelijks geluid maken—of juist wel.
