Ahh... such a delicacy :) light like a feather :) touching piece, Stein! Love it when the melody goes into the lower register :)

My wife bought a fabulous original watercolour painting of purple poppies and she left it on the music stand of my piano. As I sat down to practice I gazed at the painting and improvised this track. It has two aspects - the present day image of poppies blowing in the wind and the associated remembrance of soldiers who died in battle.

I recorded the improvisation and practised it until I could play the left hand part without it sounding too amateurish - at the end of recording the track my left hand felt about ready to fall off!

Legions Of Poppies [Re-recorded August 2014]

Today we have winter solstice,,, here in Kópavogur, Iceland we have about 4 hours of daylight....  so for us in Iceland this is a big deal,,, no more shorter days,,, and in february we will certainly notice the difference. Until then we have dark,,, november, december, janurary,  are dark here.  However,,, I did a nice song last year on this day,, dedicated to my friend Stephan Benekin,, although we have somewhat drifted apart in the past months I cherish that song and his wonderful compositions.   So here comes the 2013 one,,,  I decided enough with the melancholic, and in with the light,,, so here comes a melancholic happy light song,,, if thats something that exists.   

My SC page is now officially again a musical blog page,,,  the explore is ruined,,, and exposure for us lower men is gone,,,   so I´m just gonna do what I do best,, spam my page with songs till there is noone following me anymore.   Probably I´ll be leaving SC in the future,, these changes they made are not for me,,, but till then I´m going to enjoy myself and spam out songs and stuff....    I want to thank all you wonderful people for commenting and sharing my music last year, it means a lot to me and I hope there are a few people out there that enjoy what I´m doing here.   I think I´ve done about 160 songs/improvs in almost two years now,,, so it´s not easy to be my follower :)

Winter solstice 2013 - The Light Around The Corner (found)

All the Tears that Shine

Something different again from my last 'uplifting piece' [Moths to a Flame], this one slower,  more simple and gentle …… and in progress [I think!] hehe ….

The night was silent at the start of a another heatwave here in Australia, houses still warm despite the coming of relief and 'cool' air over the last few nights. The only sound was that of the portable air conditioner struggling to fill the room with cold air. On nights such as this, during the worst times, one dreads to leave that 'cold' room to enter into rooms where a furnace seems to envelope one.

Despite the silence, I couldn't sleep. Feeling unwell, drained from heat, worried about someone dear to me, I felt a strong urge to play the piano. A melody of sorts had formed in my mind, a melody to soothe the soul. So I pushed past that pain and mental barrier which was telling me  'I can't get up', and I got to the piano. Darkness surrounded me except for the gleam of lights from the street lamps outside my window, …..The only other light came from the glow of the computer screen spilling out onto my piano.

So I closed my eyes and just gently played in that silent warm night,… to my surprise it sounded soothing and delicate, my fingers seemed to hit the right notes and a gentle melody and harmony was created - after a difficult patch with my music, I was surprised at how my fingers effortlessly 'found' what I 'felt',….. I was so engrossed with what was happening, how calm it felt, how much joy I was gaining from playing, thinking that maybe things would be ok for the person I care for,  that I couldn't pull myself away to simply press the record button. 

My heart sank.

Could I play it again, play an improvisation, the way in which had just been created from nothing, or from within? To soothe my soul and the person I cared about so deeply, and hopefully others too.  I tried to forget that it was recording and ignore that darn metronome which I had forgotten to turn off - it throws me, hindering the free-flow nature and freedom of an improvisation

I continued to play, attempting to recapture this melody once again, and this is the result after several problems with my DAW and it not capturing the recording properly.  No, its not the same as my first attempt, no, it doesn't seem to flow as well, or find some of those harmonies that just 'came' so effortlessly from within the first time……  …..simple and imperfect though this piece may be, it still portrayed a sense of the gentleness I felt, ….. in playing ……. "quietly in the night" …. hoping that my dear friend would be alright ….

Two posts in one night,,,  well with the status of soundcloud these days who gives a crap...

Just realized that tonight is winter solstice, and soon the day will get longer. Here in Iceland this is a big deal since we have only about 5 hours of light a day.

I have done a song on this day for about 4 years I think,,, and some of them are my favorite. Today was a good day, had a lovely concert with one of my choirs and I feel good. Hope this song sends you some of my feelings, this is probably my last Solstice song on SC since my posts are going to get much rarer in 2016.

Stephan asked me to write a nocturne for the day of no light here in Iceland, 21. december and here it is dedicated to him :)  And today was dark, no sun at all here in SV Iceland. However this is in a way a happy day, tomorrow the day will start getting longer and every year it´s like that.

The music starts in F# major/minor, the key with so many black (night) notes and it ends in C major, the white/daylight key. Symbolic.  I thought of the motiv today while I was playing in a service for a lady that died way to soon, and the idea is to start dark and give way to the light as the improv progresses.  I think some moments came out ok, 
and the world did not end which is good.
