A Love To Stay In For - album version ft Gary Sunshine, with cello, live drums & new Sunshine solo

Hello Soundclouders. This is a rough cut of a new song that I thought I'd share to get some feedback. It's a pretty poor quality recording, sung and played straight into Garageband using the Imac's inbuilt mic - very low tech! Timing is dodgy in places but I just wanted to get a sense of whether it works as a song. You can hear my cat Lucy making her recording debut with some backing vocals (and to make sure she really got noticed, knocking things over with a clunk). Any constructive feedback most welcome. Thanks!

I was delighted when talented composer and musician Shauna-Kay Hamilton invited me to do a collaboration with her. She suggested we do a cover of "Killing Me Softly". Initially I felt intimidated - such a huge, well-loved song. But then I started humming it and soon I was hooked and so I said okay let's give it a go.

Killing Me Softly (Roberta Flack) with Shauna-Kay Hamilton

I'm making an eleven track studio album of original songs at the moment. Today I wanted to do a few bits of recording that I'm able to do in my home studio, that get added into the "proper" studio mix, but I spent the entire day doing admin for the album; emailing and phoning the musicians, producer, engineer etc to arrange recordings, payments, rehearsals, etc - a totally music-less day. I can see why musicians have managers! So feeling pretty frustrated tonight I picked up my guitar and just wanted to play and sing something, anything, that wasn't one of those eleven songs. I love this song - it's a real handful in every way, took me weeks to learn and it has totally gotten under my skin. I never tire of listening to the incredible original. I perform it live a bit but have never played it straight through without making a pretty major stuff-up - this time included! So I play it differently every time. A curly customer of a song but such a good 'un. I thought I'd press record, finally, for the first time today. It's just one take and as usual the song got the better of me but it's not the kind of song you want to perfect and fix, so I hope you enjoy it anyway. Thanks heaps for stopping by to listen. I was delighted to be asked to take part in the recording of this very cool song, alongside the talented Sirs; Peter Lehndorrf and John Hollingum.

Here are Peter's notes: 

From Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the Disney classic. Music and Lyrics by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey, 1937. I started this back in the summer but I was pretty bad as Snow White. John Hollingum added some mandolin although he has no recollection of playing on this track I have emails to prove it. Then Steph Casey came to rescue the track with her vocals. Sam Reynolds advised me on the mix. I played guitars and sang and provided the midi bass and drums with the help of Band in a Box.

  If you're living outside of New Zealand there is a cheaper posting option on Bandcamp where you get all the artwork and you provide your own plastic jewel case (just use the case from that One Direction CD you bought in a moment of unfortunate judgement… :^) The jewel case was 1mm too thick to get through on the NZ Post letter rate and therefore shot up another US$7 in postage costs. I pleaded, rolled my eyes, cajoled, and sulked at the counter but they weren't buying it (and neither should you have to!)

The style of music here: indie-folk/pop, americana, soul.

Steph Casey is a singer-songwriter who lives on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand. Her sound is a mix of indie-folk and alt-country, and her debut album landed in the top five of the NZIM Album Charts. Her songs have been licensed for NZ feature films and Government videos.

In June 2019 she released the single At a Bar Downtown which the Official NZ Music Chart included in their “Ones to Watch” platform, which flags NZ tracks that are surging on radio, download & streaming platforms.

The single was followed by her second studio album The Seats in My Car (released July 2019).
