The sequence of notes in this version follows the circle of fifths and each instrument plays at double the speed of the next lower instrument.

This performance was created using the Caustic 3 and Audio Evolution Mobile Android apps on a Samsung tablet and the Ubuntu version of Audacity.

Phased Serialism

It is a piano piece with 4 musical lines that each use different time signatures. Each lines uses the same sequence of 7 notes repeated using a repeated rhythm suitable for the line's time signature. The 7 notes are taken from the Solresol, a language based on musical notes, phrase 'Dore milasi domi' which means 'I love you'. The words are converted to notes using the Tonic Solfa system, similar to the system used in the song Do-Re-Mi from the musical The Sound of Music, to create the melody and each line played in different octaves. As each line has a different time signature, each bar is a different length which results in the different lines starting and finishing at different times for each repetition causing a phasing effect between the lines even when played at the same speed.

This track was created using a piano voice on the Caustic Android App and mixed using the AudioEvolution sound mixer Android App.

Dore Milasi Domi

This track is a serialist 12-tone sequence repeated by 4 Marimbas with each instrument playing at different tempos producing a piece where the phased tones and rhythms interplay with each other creating a complex sound from a simple theme.

This performance was created using Ableton Live 10 and Audacity programs on a Windows Laptop. It uses a different sequence of notes and different speeds to the previous version of this piece released.

This performance was created using Ableton Live 10 using the Shakuhachi voice of the Kontakt sampling instrument from Native Instruments. It uses a different sequence of notes and different speeds to the previous versiona of this piece released.

Phased Serialism 2020

"Beat Phase" is a number of performers all playing the same note but with each instrument detuned by a small amount (1Hz to 20Hz). The performers start and stop playing on a beat at any time that they feel providing that another performer has stopped or started since they last made a change.

This performance was played on 8 synthesisers each playing A4 (A above middle C) each detuned 1 Hz from other synths, spanning from 440 Hz to 447 Hz.

It was recorded using Ableton Live 10 with: Element 2 Synth from Waves, sine wave at 440 Hz and square wave at 444 Hz; Babylon Synth from W.A. Production, sawtooth wave at 441 Hz and triangle wave at 445 Hz; Flow Motion from Waves, triangle at 442 Hz and sine wave at 446 Hz; and Surge from the Surge Synth Team, square at 443 Hz and sawtooth wave at 447 Hz. Stereo movement is provided by Wave's Brauer Motion plugin.
