Like many others, my family tree has countless branches. One of the largest branches stretches across the Atlantic to the Parry family in Wales. I had the privilege of knowing my great-grandfather, William Parry, who studied law, worked in  Washington D.C., and made many trips to Wales throughout his life.

William’s father, Edward Parry, was born in 1842 in a small stone house in Mold, near Flint, North Wales. According to my grandmother's notes, Edward worked in a coal mine and a chemical plant before taking a job on a small freighter that sailed between Liverpool and Dublin. His time on that freighter must have sparked a desire to travel, because at 26, he arrived in North America on St. Patrick's Day, 1868. He was the only one in his immediate family to do so and quickly established a new life and new home.

Of course, I never met Edward Parry, but I've come to know him through my grandmother's notes, along with a few photos and a couple of books he purchased as a young man.  From the items he left behind, I know that he loved music and poetry, was a hard worker, and raised three kind children who made the world a better place. This composition is inspired by his life and the family I have yet to meet who still live in Wales.
